Abyssal Wolf

The Abyssal Wolf is a ferocious monstrosity that is said to have originated from the depths of the Abyss. It is a massive creature, standing at over 12 feet tall at the shoulder, with thick, shaggy fur covering its body. Its head is wolf-like, with glowing red eyes and a snarling maw filled with razor-sharp teeth.

The most distinguishing feature of the Abyssal Wolf is the writhing mass of tentacles that extends from its back and sides, wriggling and lashing out at its foes. These tentacles are covered in small, sharp barbs and can be used to grab and restrain prey.

Despite its fearsome appearance, the Abyssal Wolf is not mindless. It is a cunning predator, capable of working in packs to take down even the most formidable of prey. Its fur is thick enough to protect it from many attacks, and its tentacles provide an additional layer of defense, making it a difficult foe to bring down.

Keen Hearing and Smell. The Abyssal Wolf has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Multiattack. The Abyssal Wolf can use its Tentacle Attack. It then makes a Bite attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Tentacle Attack. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) piercing damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 16) if it is a Large or smaller creature and the Abyssal Wolf has no more than two other creatures grappled. Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Abyssal Wolf can't use the same tentacle on another target.

Regeneration. The Abyssal Wolf regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point.

Pack Tactics. The Abyssal Wolf has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the wolf's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Actions

Howl (1/day). The Abyssal Wolf lets out a piercing howl. Each creature within 120 feet of the wolf that can hear it must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the Abyssal Wolf's Howl for the next 24 hours.

Tabletop Gaming has a White Male Terrorism Problem

I am a gamer. I followed the call of Cthulhu and ran in the shadows with hackers and shamans. I traversed the ancient lands of Greyhawk, Faerun, and Eberron with companions new and old. I swung from an airship and buckled swash over London for the Kerberos Club. I threw dice and flipped cards and ground men into dust playing table-top wargames.

I don’t do that anymore.

Since July of 2015 fans of the game Malifaux have been attempting to overwhelm me with death and rape threats for no other reason than I am a woman who has opinions on the game. Wyrd Miniatures is silent on this matter and hangs up whenever anyone attempts to discuss the harassment. Given that a large number of threats identify the senders by name as Wyrd staff members, I do not find this surprising.

But that’s not what this article is about.
