CTS-B | Week12 Compulsory Question 2
Beyond aesthetics, I believe design has the ability to influence societal change.
"Let my designs inspire change, not just aesthetics." encapsulates the notion that design should have a beneficial influence and inspire social change in addition to being aesthetic. As a designer seeking social involvement, this menifesto represents the responsibility to develop design that benefits society rather than only emphasising aesthetic qualities.
Based on these objectives, I will use two case studies—the modified Hanbok and Tony's Chocolonely—to analyse the significance of design for social responsibility and positive transformation. Using these two examples, I will examine how design satisfies social duty and has a beneficial effect in this piece.
The first example is the modified Hanbok, which takes a contemporary approach to reinterpreting the classic Hanbok.

However, there are also some people who disagree with this. They contend that the modified hanbok loses its traditional charm due to its gaudy exterior. Some respond by saying that it is a "Hanbok of unknown nationality from the materials," that modern hanboks are strange, and that traditional hanboks from the past are better.
Rejecting change outright and reacting negatively to it is not a good idea. At the same time, though, it is unacceptable to change hanbok drastically that even the nation's own citizens are unable to comprehend its original customs and heritage. With this viewpoint, designers should be more accountable and look for paths that can result in constructive change rather than just producing attractive designs.
The second one is Tony's Chocolonely, which addresses the unfair problems in the chocolate industry through social responsibility. This company wants to end unfair trade practices and slave labour in the chocolate sector and wants that all workers are treated fairly and upholds fair trade principles. The company unevenly divided chocolate pieces represent unfairness in the industry, and the packaging design's message promotes ethical consumption and social responsibility.
Furthermore, this brand reminds customers of the value of ethical consumption by using eco-friendly packaging and adhering to sustainable design principles.
The modified hanbok adds sophistication and functionality while modernising traditional Korean attire. By honouring Korea's cultural legacy and developing into a modern style, the modern hanbok contributes to the sustainability of tradition, maintains their customs and promotes involvement.
Tony's Chocolonely focusses on paying producers a fair price in order to fulfil its social responsibility through fair trade. In keeping with what the brand upholds, this sends a message to customers encouraging ethical consumption and constructive change for a better society.
I created this Hyundai decal to highlight how crucial environmental preservation is. In keeping with Hyundai's environmentally conscious principles, I want to encourage people to appreciate and ponder about nature.

These give me a clear understanding of how design can be more than just a beautiful aesthetic; it can also be a tool that actually affects change. In the future, I would like to continue to contribute to driving social participation and change through design.

CTS-B | Week11 Compulsory Question 1

"If you only do what you can, you will never be more than what you are now." is our manifesto. This assertion exhorts people to venture outside their comfort zones. Comfort zones can hinder our development, erecting imperceptible obstacles that impede growth. This manifesto serves as a powerful reminder to transcend our predetermined boundaries.
To promote progress, we must broaden our horizons by welcoming fresh viewpoints and creative thinking. The key takeaway is clear: do not adhere strictly to traditional approaches; instead, take the chance to break the mold and embrace a challenging mindset.

Design ought to inspire significant change and go beyond aesthetics. "Let my designs inspire change, not just aesthetics," exemplifies this idea. It urges us to look beyond superficial beauty and contribute positively to our communities. Although aesthetics are important, designers must consider the wider implications of their work to address urgent societal concerns and improve people's lives. Design has a power for social creativity and transformation, significantly enhancing human experiences.
My manifesto emphasizes the designer's need to use their work for a greater purpose rather than merely focusing on aesthetics. By incorporating critical thinking and social consciousness into the creative process, designers can become change agents. I propose to refine our manifesto to make it more detailed. "99% of what you want to create already exists; 1% is your potential creativity," is a statement that merits further exploration. This 1% represents the unknown aspects of our creativity as designers that we must identify and develop.
Attending classes alone is not enough to foster creativity; it requires introspection, critical analysis, and in-depth study. Engaging in these activities allows me to discover and cultivate our unique creativity. This approach enhances analytical skills, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking alongside aesthetic appeal.
I realized that design is much more than simply creating something new; it also involves using our skills to spread awareness and promote positive change. My exploration of innovative approaches to convey global challenges, particularly in my brief film project, demonstrated how design can benefit society from a designer's perspective.

I began considering designs that address larger societal issues rather than just personal creativity after connecting this concept with the CTS B subject. The Ttareungyi bike-sharing program in Seoul is a noteworthy illustration. From 2015, it promotes sustainable urban transportation as a solution to traffic congestion and elevated GHG emissions.

Apple's Assistive Access feature on iOS also exemplifies how design improves accessibility by simplifying the user interface for those with cognitive difficulties, providing a streamlined experience and necessary features.

Having learned the value of texture through embossing, I plan to integrate both digital and real textures in the future to enhance audience emotional responses. I will also focus on sustainable design to address societal challenges like environmental issues and create products that improve daily life through user experience design.

CTS-B | Week03 Connecting Practice with Society
Modern society is in trouble from a variety of environmental and social issues that become increasingly serious. Human rights abuses, poverty, and climate change are just a few of the issues that have impacted our lives. Designers will be crucial in finding answers and creating innovative ideas that tackle these critical issues.
For example, even with the innumerable scientific and technological advances, there are still situations when people might perish from a lack of access to clean water. People who are forced to drink dirty water are deprived of their right to drink clean water. In these situations, they can reclaim their rights with the aid of designers.
The instance explains the use of straw filters to ensure a right to safe water to drink. The LifeStraw was produced to give people living in regions where drinkable water is scarce access across an easily available water filter option. This type of product is an instance of social design, which aims at solving problems connected with public health instead of merely functional designs. Throughout this process, designers create designs that represent social and environmental principles while fusing form and function and taking the user experience into account. To say it simply, they contribute to upholding social responsibility while also considering technical progress and consumer ease. These products offer outstanding examples of design that transcend much beyond their intended function as water filter systems in terms of social effect.

CTS-B | Week02 Connecting Theory and Practice
People show different sides of themselves in social settings, which can occasionally result in misconceptions about who we are. To satisfy my employer, I may, for instance, smoke a cigarette that I detest. These encounters can aid in our identity search, and seeking outside assistance is a crucial step in the process. People alter who they are in order to feel like they belong in a variety of social situations. To improve the quality of a person's life, they must have this "social identity." There is direction and a sense of pride in belonging to a group that has a common aim.
For designers, self-definition and self-identification are crucial aspects in developing a personal brand. I have learnt that in order to stand out at work, I need to create a personal brand that accentuates my advantages. By doing this, I raise my profile in the eyes of prospective employers and improve my chances of landing an interview.
It is equally important for me to define my artistic identity as it is to define my social or personal identity. As a designer, I see my personal style as a way to brand myself and make a lasting impression on people. It is crucial for me to develop my creative identity and personal brand as a designer, and even though the concept sounds abstract, there are practical steps I can take to make it happen. I will comprehend myself more fully as a result of this self-discovery process.

CTS-B | Week01 Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
Fact-based material elucidating statistics and figures is presented critically. Typically, it releases data with little to no reprocessing in its original format as a percentage or figure. The data may be presented as pure fact, free from embellishment or distortion, even if this information does not make the data clear.
Conversely, the information obtained through creative means offers re-edited data instead of numbers and statistics. Refined information works well for presenting the data in an understandable and visually appealing way, reaching a broad audience, and piqueing people's curiosity. Instead of just presenting data or facts, we frequently employ techniques to reprocess data and visually represent data and results, which makes them clearer and simpler to comprehend.

For example, we could recognize the significance of reconstructing data while providing imaginative explanations of the same content, such as explaining Seoul's overcrowding in comparison to other cities. Visually comparing Seoul with Los Angeles and Rome makes more sense than relying solely on statistics.
Perhaps people are wondering why innovative ways of disseminating information are so important. Re-edited data offers a simpler method of communication. We discovered that comparing Seoul and Los Angeles' population densities through visuals is more intuitive than through numerical comparisons. Properly refined data can ease the recipient's pressure to comprehend every detail. Schematization of information would be very beneficial in today's fast-paced communication environment.
