it’s been a dream of mine to make these books more accessible to everyone and after much trial and error it has finally been accomplished! all of the ga’hoole books are in this g drive folder! (i plan on adding lost tales, guide to the great tree, and rise of a legend at some point, but for now it’s all the main books 1-15)
feel free to share with fellow fans, people who wanna start the series, animal fantasy book lovers, whatever!
EDIT: the companion books are up on the drive now too!

If this is a safe space...How to train your dragon(Both the books AND the movies) >>>> Wings of fire(yes including all three arcs)
While WOF's first arc still remains to be the best(And take this with a grain of salt bc arc 1 sti has some issues) it's still quite 'mid' on its own imo in terms of worldbuilding(barely showing us any environments in the war or having any combatants participating in it as central characters) also the designs of Wof were always founded in such a weird way(being called "tribes" and shit) also, the humor and dialogue(even when I loved the series) always felt way too meta and human-like to me, especially near the end with the Scorpion just being a normal criminal city instead of anywhere legitimately dangerous in the animal world.
HTTYD, though? In the movies and books Dragons are very much meant to be real animals, all the while still being intelligent. In the books dragons were intelligent enough to speak, BUT were still very much animals in terms of design and execution. Also, the designs in the movies in general just have so much variety and creativity in a way WOF could never(a dragon doesn't have to be related to an entirely different subspecies just to have a Slightly Different Appearance from others of it's kind, like Sunny). I know WoF only had 7 main kinds to work with, BUT still! You have all this variation(Sun-themed, Moon-themed, possibly Star themed if Tui was brave enough to just make the shit two distinct species, Ocean-themed, Earth-themed, Sky-themed)and you still messed it up(also imo Icewings and Rainwings should've never been a main dragon tribe bc YOU ALREADY HAAAVE AN AQUATIC TRIBE TO FOCUS ON but okay Tui)
youre exactly right, WOF has the same problem that MLP does, in that it's a fantasy world of non-human, quadrupedal magical creatures and yet all the architecture around them looks exactly like anything made and used by humans. drives me nuts! i havent read the HTTYD books, but the movies have such lovely and believable worldbuilding, and i know the designs are (mostly?) based off the books, which are fantastic

hey, i figured you would be a good person to ask this given that most of this blog is critical about how tui writes abuse, but do you have any writing advice for writing abuse survivors and any of the other topics she mishandles?
i would totally understand if you do not as it seems you are an abuse survivor and that may be uncomfortable for you. in which case, could you redirect me to some sources?
thank you for answering either way ❤️
i dont really have specific writing resources for this, anyone is more than free to add what they have in the comments/reblogs/inbox etc!
other than that id suggest definitely research the specific kind of trauma you're writing about, and its symptoms and be sure to be thorough bc theres many ways that different trauma manifests. i definitely suggest asking friends or peers who are comfortable helping, because hearing first hand about the experience first hand is very important to a deeper understanding and empathy of your character/story!

one thing i fucking hate is how Cricket doesn't have a character arc at all in her story and most of The Hive Queen is just her being mistreated by the SilkWing rebellion (because uwu reverse racism aren't we clever). if i were in charge of writing The Hive Queen, i think i would have her arc be about how she should listen to the SilkWings and LeafWings and join the rebellion. hell you could even still have some of the SilkWings and LeafWings mistrust her
ALSO, i hate how Sundew's arc of "it's not all Hivewings it's just Queen Wasp" could have easily worked if it was about her realizing that SilkWings are also affected and in order to overthrow the HiveWing society, she'll need allies. i think you could still have some good HiveWings who are also mistreated under the current system if you still wanted
i don't know if this post makes sense, i am typing this all down to share after thinking of it when trying to sleep
i completely agree! the amount of missed potential and racism (intended or not) is astounding in these two characters

UPDATE: NORTH GAZA DONATION DRIVE, Introducing Mahmoud Abu Salama
This is our team leader in North Gaza, Mahmoud Abu Salama who decided to reveal his identity.
Mahmoud is an artist, professional photographer, and journalist who has been consistently documenting what it’s like on the ground in the North of Gaza for months now. He has been broadcasting the news of horrible situations to many Arab and international news outlets, and on his instagram, which you can view here. Despite many threats to his life as a journalist he has been leading the efforts in finding supplies and distributing them to the hungry.
Our drive has reached around $6000 as of writing this which will roughly buy 12-15 bags of flour. We still have ways to go in making a good impact. So please help Mahmoud to get to our minimum goal of 25000 by the end of the week. Please consider donating today as your donations will literally save the lives of starving families!
You can follow him on Instagram @almajd_free

hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)

People like to pretend I will "get better" so they do not have to think about the deadly lie they are living. Abandoning disabled and high-risk people to preventable death is eugenics.
To clarify, this is NOT just an American issue -- think of the "pan" in pandemic.
The MSKCC Library
The People's CDC (weekly weather reports on COVID in the U.S.)
Image IDs available in Alt Text and written out below:
Image ID begins. A black and white cartoon comic titled Pandemic Year 4. This is panel 1. A boy with short hair — Joey, the author of the comic — is holding a Christmas wreath and handing it to his boyfriend, a boy with long hair and a beard, who is standing in a window while decorating. The text reads: This year, my boyfriend and I got fresh pine wreaths from the farmer’s market — our fist big Christmas decorations together!
Panel 2. A hand holds pine needles. Cartoon stink clouds radiate off of the pine needles. The text reads: I break pine needles between my fingers and it smells hideous. Pain shoots through my head.
Panel 3. Joey stands in front of a table on which there are various foods. He looks disgusted and is covering his nose and mouth with his hands. The text reads: This is how I have lived since my February 2020 COVID infection. COVID caused brain and nerve damage, making everything smell and taste like rot. The condition is called parosmia, and it has no cure. Eating is a nightmare.
Panel 4. Joey’s boyfriend, a taller boy with long hair and a beard, puts his hand on Joey’s shoulder. They are shown from behind and are both wearing backpacks and winter coats. The text reads: Last week, my boyfriend walked me home from work midday after I had a near-fainting episode. I wear a heart monitor full-time. Doctors say I’m “too young”.
Panel 5. Joey is shown from behind, sitting sadly and gazing out a window. The text reads: I’ve literally been isolated from the rest of the world for four years. One COVID infection destroyed my life, and I can’t risk another. How can I get you to understand? After becoming disabled by COVID at 19 years old, I have been completely shut off from the outside world.
Panel 6. Joey stands in between two maskless and anonymous figures. Joey looks uncomfortable and is crossing his arms and gazing at them. He is wearing a respirator mask and goggles. The figure on the right is holding a bag labeled “food Joey can’t eat”. The text reads: “Friends” and family who have seen the depth of my suffering for four years have stopped masking and can’t be bothered to care. Family Christmas meant that I had to reiterate daily that I would not and physically could not eat at restaurants.
Panel 7. A drawing of an open laptop, next to which lays an N95 mask. On the laptop, a headline from the Washington Post is displayed. The headline reads: Covid kills nearly 10,000 in a month as holidays fuel spread, WHO says. The comic text reads: This winter has been the 2nd highest peak of the pandemic, with at least 10,000 Americans dying of COVID in December. Playing pretend at “normalcy” is profoundly violent and deadly. Under the comic frame, a citation reads: The Washington Post, January 11, 2024. This is an undercount, as there is no more COVID tracking in the U.S.
Panel 8. A drawing of Joey gesturing at an educational chalk board with a pointer. He is wearing a respirator mask, goggles, and a sweater vest. The text reads: COVID is a virus that causes long-term damage to your organs and nervous system. It’s also a Biosafety Level 3 pathogen, like tuberculosis, meaning that is can be lethal upon inhalation and requires special and serious PPE in Laboratories. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has a digital library of research on COVID impacts. https://libguides.mskcc.org/CovidImpacts/Home
Panel 9. An anonymous figure behind an oration desk is trying to cover a pile of bones behind them. On the pile of bones is a flag that says: Just keep buying and working! The text reads: You are being led to enact violence on your community members by a government who is sacrificing you on the altar of capital. You should be terrified.
Panel 10. A drawing of Joey’s head from the side. he is wearing a respirator mask. The text reads: There is no neutrality in a mass-death and mass-disabling pandemic. Wear a mask or forever be complicit. The comic is dated February 3, 2024. Image ID ends.

i'm curious why you changed your mind on israeli settlers not being ethically obligated to leave palestine?
Tbh I don't really care what happens to the settlers. If they want to live in a secular Palestinian land, they'll stay. But if they don't they'll probably leave of their own will.
I do think many need to face consequences for the violence they enacted or perpetuated. People who participated in the nakba for example are still alive and face no consequences. People right now who are calling for the extermination of Palestinians also probably will face no consequences after this. Those who participated in non-political non-lethal violence or perpetuation also probably won't face consequences.
I do think it's a serious problem that many people seem to think it's "only the actions of the government" that's causing the harm when its a deep societal malice embedded into the fabric of Israeli culture. They need to stop pretending that the government is the only thing wrong when they have family members who participated in the nakba and naksa and now this current nakba. The idf is made of "civilians" after all.
Anyways this is all to say they need to realize their segregation and apartheid is embedded within their society based on jewish supremacy and they need to work on dismantling that if they don't want to leave Palestine. That, and also freeing palestine and abolishing israel. Because Palestine will be free regardless of what they want or don't want.

Today 40 Palestinians died in an Israeli shelling of homes in central Gaza, while more than 100 were severely injured (majority women and children). Yesterday Israel bombed Syria, killing two. Israel also bombed Lebanon, killing a woman and a girl.
Just to be crystal clear—Israel is now simultaneously bombing Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.

Wanted to let you guys know that Let’s Talk Palestine has just launched fundsforgaza, an initiative created for the purpose of spotlighting families in urgent need of emergency funds. This list highlights families who’re trying to evacuate Gaza, but which aren’t getting enough attention. Please donate if you can—and whether or not you can, spread this to as many people as possible. The delay between this second and the next could make a difference in whether a family gets to live or not.

in light of israel's looming invasion on rafah, south africa implored the icj to call for the protection of palestinians with new preliminary orders. the icj denied this request, insisting that its january orders would be sufficient enough in ensuring the safety of people residing in rafah.
we have all seen how israel responded to the icj verdict earlier this month. they have all but intensified their attacks on palestinians, their favorite of whom seem to be children. this will end in a bloodbath. palestinians, already malnourished and living in literal tents, will be bombarded, they will be shot, they will be slaughtered. and when i say palestinians, a lot of them are actual toddlers. the videos coming out of this are proof enough.
at this point, it has been made amply clear that palestinians will never experience safety in their own homeland. a lot of the families in gaza are trying to raise funds to get out of it, because there's nowhere left to go.
there is nowhere left to go. if these people don't get the funds necessary to escape, they will die.
it's vital that you go to operation olive branch's spreadsheet, choose a family that resonates with you, and donate as much as you can to their gofundme. every last dollar counts. one dollar could be the difference between life and death for a family. please don't fall victim to the bystander effect. your contribution counts, however little it may be. and whether you're able to donate or not, spread this to as many people as you can. each second we stay silent is a second an entire family is brutally massacred.
