if you’re an immigrant—documented or not—you are welcome here. you FULLY deserve safety, dignity, and peace!

to anyone from palestine, sudan, congo—i’m sorry. i’m sorry for the silence, the inaction, the bystander role we as americans continue to play.

and I as christian woman want to say if you’re queer, trans, questioning—your existence is not up for debate. you belong here! and you are loved!

i had this thing called feelings

thinking about brother's best friend!rafe whom your brother caught staring at you…

“Don’t touch her,” your brother warned Rafe, after seeing his eyes linger on his little sister a little longer than appropriate. You had returned to the house after giving your brother something, and Rafe followed your receding figure until it disappeared.

“What?” Rafe brought his gaze back to his best friend. Your brother was wearing shades outdoors, but he could see a glimpse of his eye color, similar to yours, beneath the dark lenses.

“You heard me,” he said with a light chuckle, his shoulders relaxing. His palms were flat against the light-colored concrete deck as his feet swayed inside the pool. "I see the way you look at her.”

Rafe knew there was no use denying it. He was right; he was looking. Whenever you enter a room, whenever you find each other in close proximity. Rafe could feel an inexplicable prick against his spine whenever you were around. His heart rabbited in his chest, and his palms grew sweaty. You had him in disarray, and you didn’t even know it.

“You don’t trust me?” Rafe asked, his voice thick with emotion. He could never hide it, but he never needed to with your brother. His best friend, who saw him through the worst.

“I never said that,” he said with a smile, chewing on a pastel-blue gum. “I just said you couldn’t touch her.”

“So there’s a day I can?”

“Don’t be too eager,” he laughed, catching the attention of Kelce and Topper, who were lounging around the pool at your house.

“You didn’t answer my question,”

“Look,” he began, “She’s my sister. I care about her, and I care about you; I don’t want anything messy if you two ever dated and broke up.”

It was fair, but Rafe couldn’t squander the fruit of doubt blossoming in his chest. He had to ask. “What about Top? Or Kelce?”

Your brother laughed again, shaking his head. “No, none of them either,” he declared, “Topper doesn’t seem like her type, and Kelce—well, I don’t think she’s his.”

“But if it had to be anyone?”

“You’re still on this?”

Rafe swallowed hard, “You brought it up.”

Your brother nodded, leaning back with the prop of his arms. Kelce had pushed Topper into the pool, causing the latter to send daggers in his direction. “If it had to be anyone,” your brother mused, overlooking his companions before glancing at the door where you retreated to. “I guess it could be you.”

Somehow, that was a victory in itself.

“But it can’t,” he added, dejecting Rafe’s joy. “She’s off-limits. I don’t want you breaking her heart.”

“I won’t,”

“Care to make that promise?”

“I will,” Rafe accepted immediately.

Your brother looked at Rafe as if he were crazy, and perhaps, there was a chance he was. But he knew something deep down that couldn’t be explained—he wanted you. He just had to get through your brother to make it.

He shook his head, chuckling. “Don’t kid yourself, Rafe,” he declared, “It’s not possible. She’s my responsibility.”

Rafe frowned, unable to say anything for the longest time, and doubt crept into his lungs again. But, before they were coerced into playing another stupid game in the water, your brother turned to Rafe and said, “But protect her, okay? Especially if I’m not around.”

this is such a rough draft, but it's part of the book i'm writing rn, oh well
