You had always been the behind-the-scenes type of girl — quiet, reliable and easy to convince.

So when Heeseung asked you for a favour, of course you said yes.

“Y/N? I need your help with something…” Heeseung asked, scratching the back of his head.

“Yeah? Whats up?” you reply, raising an eyebrow.

“I want to do something… bold, but not too obvious”

He hands you a note with a chocolate bar. The note was folded, but you could tell he had written it in his best handwriting through the pen seeping through the paper a little.

“Could you slip this into her locker for me? Please?”

You hesitated for a bit. You wanted to help him, but by doing so, it would burn a hole in your heart. In the end, you slowly took the note and chocolate from his hand, although it felt like taking a bullet instead.

It started small — notes, chocolates here and there. Things that could fit into that tiny hole in the locker door.

Little folded hearts, gifts with inside jokes you didn't even understand.

Then, it slowly got bigger — paper flower bouquets, keychains, things she loved. Since they wouldn’t fit in the locker, you had no choice but to put it under her table.

It got harder to be more secretive, but you tried your best anyway. You didn’t want to disappoint Heeseung, after all, you wanted to see him happy.

Because he trusted you.

Because you loved him.

But he didn’t know.

As you walked down the halls, the whispers grew louder. Like an irritating radio jingle that plays after every few songs.

“She’s been getting more notes.”

“I saw Y/N by her locker.”

“I think Y/N is putting those gifts under her table. I saw it from the corner of my eye.”

“Omg, does Y/N like her??”

Rumours spread like wildfire. Everyone knew what was going on. Everyone wanted to know what was coming next. A stuffed toy? A bouquet of real flowers?

And then the girl — Heeseung’s crush — cornered you.

“Was it you?” she asked, not unkind, but wary.

“You’ve been leaving all those gifts in my locker and on my table haven’t you?”

“I don’t know what kind of joke you’re playing, but cut it out ok? No offence, but you’re not really my type.”

You hesitated for a second too long, her expression changed.

Then she left.

Heeseung came storming to you right after.

“Are you kidding me??” his voice sharper than you’ve ever heard.

“Because of you, she thinks this whole thing is a prank! I told you to be secretive, didn’t I??” His face started getting read from anger, the look in his eyes grew intimidating. You’ve never felt fear around him until now. It was uncomfortable, you were never uncomfortable around him.

“You want me to be secretive?? With the gifts getting bigger and bigger, how in the world am I suppose to be secretive??” you argued back, trying to hold your ground.

“And it's not my fault she thinks it's a joke. She assumed — just like everybody else.”

“You should’ve corrected her!”

“It's not my job to tell her stuff. I’m just the messenger, the delivery guy. I am not responsible for her assumptions.”

He scoffed. “What happened to helping a friend out?”

You glared at him. “What happened? I’ve been helping you out since the start! Everyday it’s something new, and everyday I do what you ask with no questions. All this while everyone thinks I’m some creepy stalker!”

Heeseung looked frustrated, but not sorry. “This isn’t about you.”

And that broke you.

“I know it wasn’t about me!” you snapped. “It was never about me! Not when you talk about her, not when you look at me like I’m just your helper — your errand girl — your invisible backup plan!”

“Stop being sensitive, Y/N.”

You were taken aback. “No. You don’t get to call me sensitive. Not when I’ve been the backbone of your little fantasy that you couldn’t do yourself. I’ve been writing your love story while mine was burning in my hands.”

Silence fell between the two of you like a heavy weight.

Heeseung stared at you, speechless for once. You blinked back your tears.

“You didn’t even ask if i was ok.”

That night, you sat alone in your room with a half-crushed letter in your hands.

The one you wrote for him, with the neatest handwriting you could do. The one you were going to leave in his locker months ago, before he asked for your help.

“You’re like a sunlight, bright and comfy. I don’t want to hide in the shadows anymore, not when you’re with me.”

You burnt it. It was useless anyway. You knew what was going to happen next. You lost all little hope you had left.

Two weeks later, Heeseung and his crush were official.

He never talked to you as often anymore. You were back to square one, in the shadows.

But you learnt the truth the hard way: sometimes, being needed isn’t the same as being loved.

°˖➴ a/n: hehe first one shot!! Randomly had this idea and decided to write it, hope yall like it!

The air was chilly with the scent of river water and soju, laughter coming from the tents lining next to the Han River. A gentle breeze rustled the flaps of the small pocha, with fairy lights hung neatly inside it casting a soft glow on flushed cheeks and empty glasses.

“Yah, you”, you say, pointing to the soju bottle you were holding, “Lee Riwoo. Who gave you the permission to live in my mind? Rent free even!” You plopped your head onto the table while giggling to yourself, finding what you have said amusing.

The shop owner, a kind ahjumma, shook her head with a fond sigh. “Poor thing. Must’ve had a rough day.”

She walked over to your table and picked up your phone. She looked through the emergency contact list and found the contact number saved with a cute heart; Riwoo 💕

While brushing his teeth to get ready for bed, Riwoo heard his phone ring on the sink. YN🌷

He chuckled to himself. “Who does she think she is, calling me at this time?” he mumbled under his breath. He let the phone ring for some time before deciding to give in and pick up.

“Hello? Is this Riwoo?” an unfamiliar voice was heard on the other line. Frowning his eyebrows in confusion, Riwoo replied “Yes, this is Riwoo. May I ask who’s calling?”

“I’m a shop owner of a pocha next to the Han River. There’s a lady here who keeps talking to her soju bottle while mentioning your name. I decided to scroll through her emergency contact list and found your contact. She seems very drunk, so could you help to pick her up?”

“Ah, ok, I’ll head over there now.” He sighed before throwing on a hoodie and wore sandals then rushed out the door.

Riwoo arrived fifteen minutes later, breathless and worried. The ahjumma pointed to the bundled girl laying on the tables, cheeks rosy, nose red and body shivering from the chill breeze.

“She drank three bottles by herself,” the ahjumma explained, shaking her head. “She wouldn’t stop mentioning you while talking to herself.”

Riwoo thanked the kind shop owner before heading in your direction. He kneeled next to you and brushed the hair out of your face, admiring your soft features. “YN… hey, are you ok?”

Your eyes fluttered open, and squinted. “Oh Riwoo! How did you know I was here? Do you have some super powers?” you lazily spoke with a sloppy grin.

He scoffed before helping you up. “I’m here to save you, dummy. Lets get you home.”

It wasn’t his first time giving you a piggyback ride, but this time it felt different. Your arms clung more tightly around his neck, and your breath tickled his neck as you hummed softly.

“You’re back is warm… like a perfectly warm bed to sleep in after a cold day”

Riwoo smiled, cheeks turning pink. “Just don’t drool on me like you do every time you are drunk.”

“I’m not drunk!” you protested. “I’m just filled with emotional drinks.”

“Whatever floats your boat, YN. I’m just glad you didn’t fall into the river.”

He carried you across a bridge, the lights dancing on the calm river. You softened your voice against the background of cars and waves.

“Riwoo… can I tell you a secret?”

He adjusted you on his back. “You’re already spilling everything today. Might as well.”

“I think I like you…”

The world stopped for a moment. The sound of the busy city was drowned by your words replaying in his head. He stopped in his tracks, the pounding of his heart growing faster as his breath hitched, filling the silence between the two of you.

“Wha- what did you say…?” he asked, his voice quiet.

“I like you, you dummy. I didn’t want to tell you cause I thought it would ruin our friendship, but I can’t keep it in any longer… especially when you’re this close…”

Riwoo let the words hang in the air, while trying to grasp the whole thing. Finally, he let out a breath.

“I think… I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

You didn’t reply — your breath evening out.

Riwoo let out a soft laugh. “Of course you would fall asleep after saying something like that.”

He tightened his grip around your legs and continued walking, his heart lighter than the girl on his back. He kept glancing to you with a sweet smile that stayed throughout the whole journey.

Maybe you wouldn’t remember everything that happened.

But he would.

And he would make sure you were sober the next time he says it back.

“Ah, ok, I’ll head over there now.” He sighed before throwing on a hoodie and wore sandals then rushed out the door.

Riwoo arrived fifteen minutes later, breathless and worried. The ahjumma pointed to the bundled girl laying on the tables, cheeks rosy, nose red and body shivering from the chill breeze.

“She drank three bottles by herself,” the ahjumma explained, shaking her head. “She wouldn’t stop mentioning you while talking to herself.”

Riwoo thanked the kind shop owner before heading in your direction. He kneeled next to you and brushed the hair out of your face, admiring your soft features. “YN… hey, are you ok?”

Your eyes fluttered open, and squinted. “Oh Riwoo! How did you know I was here? Do you have some super powers?” you lazily spoke with a sloppy grin.

He scoffed before helping you up. “I’m here to save you, dummy. Lets get you home.”

It wasn’t his first time giving you a piggyback ride, but this time it felt different. Your arms clung more tightly around his neck, and your breath tickled his neck as you hummed softly.

“You’re back is warm… like a perfectly warm bed to sleep in after a cold day”

Riwoo smiled, cheeks turning pink. “Just don’t drool on me like you do every time you are drunk.”

“I’m not drunk!” you protested. “I’m just filled with emotional drinks.”

“Whatever floats your boat, YN. I’m just glad you didn’t fall into the river.”

He carried you across a bridge, the lights dancing on the calm river. You softened your voice against the background of cars and waves.

“Riwoo… can I tell you a secret?”

He adjusted you on his back. “You’re already spilling everything today. Might as well.”

“I think I like you…”

The world stopped for a moment. The sound of the busy city was drowned by your words replaying in his head. He stopped in his tracks, the pounding of his heart growing faster as his breath hitched, filling the silence between the two of you.

“Wha- what did you say…?” he asked, his voice quiet.

“I like you, you dummy. I didn’t want to tell you cause I thought it would ruin our friendship, but I can’t keep it in any longer… especially when you’re this close…”

Riwoo let the words hang in the air, while trying to grasp the whole thing. Finally, he let out a breath.

“I think… I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

You didn’t reply — your breath evening out.

Riwoo let out a soft laugh. “Of course you would fall asleep after saying something like that.”

He tightened his grip around your legs and continued walking, his heart lighter than the girl on his back. He kept glancing to you with a sweet smile that stayed throughout the whole journey.

Maybe you wouldn’t remember everything that happened.

And he would make sure you were sober the next time he says it back.
