This was a practice during our visit to Carlo Scarpa’s work. It shows connections of using different materials (pic1-3), his sensitivity to old structure when he designed (pic4), and my interpretation of designing new structure on Scarpa’s details(pic5).

Sequencing of space sketches through Hadrian's Villa on a gloomy day

This is a site mapping exercise to understand sequencing between spaces for our upcoming museum competition. It is also an attempt to use design tactics to make improvements of the site to make it more accessible and appropriate for visitors.
The site given is at Porta Portese, originally a city gate in ancient time, then became a busy traffic intersection and significant landmark.
1. Creating a public space Southwest of Porta Portese would be an appropiate approach as Viale delle Mura Portuensi (the street southwest of Porta Portese) is packed with parking lots and lack pedestrian streets. By removing the parking spaces and moving the Rimessa ATAC Trastevere building to the side, it would free up the space along the city wall, therefore provide an opportunity to become a public venue. Also there is an attempt to connect road from the West side to Porta Portese.
2. This mapping focuses on connecting main streets to the site. Using Porta Portese as a focal point that radiates roads out, connecting the main street (Viale di Trastevere) and other major streets coming crossing the river. The purpose is to provide multiple routes to the site. Underground walkway under main streets would be a good solution for pedestrians trying to cross busy, big streets.
3. Preserving valuable structures in the city such as churches should be one of main focuses during the process of urban planning in the Eternal city. Alteration of streets to provide easy access to the side from the Northeast is shown in this drawing, and also an attempt to smooth the minor streets without interrupting any valuable structures.
4. Old buildings on site such as the small theater and old parking structure should be coorporated in design process as a reference to the history of Trastevere. In this drawing, a small piazza space next to Scalea del Tamburino as a public meeting point that further connects the public space along the city wall to Porta Portese.
5. Using Paris as a study case with circular pods throughout the city that radiates out and connect with separate areas, a circular space is carved out Northeast of Porta Portese to connect with another circular space, Piazza Mastai and other streets. Connecting public spaces would be beneficial in the sense of direction and social aspects.
6. This is a further attempt to connect all major public spaces (Piazza di Santa Maria, Piazza Mastai, and the new craved out piazzas) in a way that would be easy for visitors to direct themselves through landmarks such as fountains, churches, and theater.

Mapping of sequence From Fontana Dell’ Acqua Paola to Porta Portese

Sequencing sketches from Fontana Dell’ Acqua Paola to Porta Portese. Walking down a winding paths with multiples intersection could be confusing, it would be better if there are some signage pointing at main street like Viale di Trastevere. Some streets were apparently not made for walking pedestrians and cars were going really fast. Going down Scalea Del Tamburino was interesting because the staircases were not visible from afar and it almost looked like a cliff without fences. Although Viale di Trastevere is a busy street, the two piazzas are rarely being utilized. The last street, Viale Delle Mura Portuensi, has a parking lot for Trastevere and a few auto related businesses, but not many people walk on this street.
