Prologue

While not present in this chapter as her whereabouts are unknown, she is mentioned by several people within the chapter.

Amidst Shinnok’s taunting of Raiden, the fallen Elder God says that even when he kills him, a he will still live on within Li’s body, telling him that nothing can kill Li’s body because of her immortality as well as how he himself evolved within these past years within Li’s body; Shinnok further taunts Raiden upon the subject by saying ‘You’ve no heart to kill her even if you stood a chance. The heartbreak would be too grand for your brother to survive it’. Raiden taunts the fallen Elder God back by saying ‘If you force my hand, I will not hesitate to sacrifice her to eliminate you’, which causes Shinnok to give a laugh, amused by Raiden’s coldness.

Upon Kronika’s appearance, amidst her words, she assures Shinnok that he will take ahold of Li’s body as to compensate for Raiden’s decapitation, saying ‘It is only a matter of time. Despite her (Li) persistence all these years, she will fail to resits further against my intervention’ as if assuring him of the outcome that he’d win over Li’s body.

After such, she is not mentioned any longer in the chapter.

Chapter 1: Next Of Kin (Cassie Cage)

While not present nor mentioned at the start of the chapter, she is seen at its end.

Once Kronika teleports herself as well as Liu Kang & Kitana to the Hourglass, amidst her explanation of the Hourglass & Raiden’s role in damaging her work, she uses the same sand which teleported them to their current location to reveal Li’s body in a chained & unconscious manner, stored in an undisclosed location; Kronika explains that the sorceress’s body is key to the balance because of a part of Shinnok’s soul living within her body, further explaining that if any outside source with the malicious intent to aid Li might come, her plans will fall, something she cannot allow to come to pass.

Managing to convince Liu Kang & Kitana’s Netherrealm allegiance upon assuring them that Raiden will not exist in her New Era, she also explains that Li’s body is in need of further protection at the undisclosed location it is chained in, to which the Revenant couple agree to appoint many of their troops to guard it whenever Kronika may need it, assuring Kronika by saying ‘If anyone dares to aid her, they’ll be cut down without hesitation’ from Kitana.

Chapter 4: Fire & Ice (Sub-Zero & Scorpion)

Upon Noob Saibot’s arrival, the chosen character taunts the specter of Li’s absence by his side, to which Noob Saibot responds coldly with ‘That woman held me down. She failed to support my vision for the Lin Kuei’, to which the chosen character rebuts firmly, mentioning that if so was the case as he claims, it was because his vision was folly.

Li is mentioned once more by Cyrax, who questions her absence, given his memory of how deeply she treasured the Lin Kuei as well as how she was against the clan’s cyberization; upon Kuai Liang & Grandmaster Hasashi’s silent exchange of glances upon Cyrax’s words, the cyborg assumes the worst of her fate by saying ‘She wasn’t forced to turn, was she?’. Upon such words, Kuai Liang explains that he’s no clue of where she is nor what happened to her, saying he has not seen her ever since time before Bi-Han’s death; hearing such news, Cyrax takes a moment to mourn Li as he gazes away, missing the hint of guilt that shadows over Kuai Liang’s face, something that Grandmaster Hasashi noticed, yet decided to not mention.

Li is discussed again at the end of the chapter by both the cryomancer & the pyromancer as they make their way back to Raiden; Grandmaster Hasashi mentions the guilt that shadowed his friend’s expression amidst the conversation he held with Cyrax regarding Li, yet finds his suspicions rising upon Kuai Liang’s quick shut down of the question. As Grandmaster Hasashi began to calmly yet firmly insist upon the topic, he eventually manages to convince the cryomancer to open up about the truth he is attempting to bury, saying ‘Burying it will not change it. Denial is a powerful nemesis’.

With seconds of silence passing, Kuai Liang reveals the truth; he explains how he and Li never were close as well as how he despised her deeply, surprising the pyromancer who proceeds to question Kuai Liang’s reasons for his dislike toward her. Kuai Liang answers through further explaining how, ever since she ‘joined’ the clan, the clan elders fed him lies regrading Li’s character as to manipulate him to hate her, making it so that if he ever rose to Grandmaster, he would have Li kicked out of the clan, therefore ridding of her from the Lin Kuei as they always wished. Furthermore, Kuai Liang explains how he found out such truth once he himself rose to Grandmaster as well as revealing as to how he had her banished from the Lin Kuei once she came to him for help shortly after Bi-Han’s death, angered & in denial as he was unwilling to believe he could have ever been so easily manipulated by the elders. Yet once he gave himself time to come to peace with the truth, guilt quickly overtook him, the wound only deepening once he attempted to sought her out yet always failed to find her.

Seeing the deep guilt within Kuai Liang’s face, Grandmaster Hasashi offers comfort to the cryomancer, telling him that it would be unwise to blame himself for such events, explaining that the clan elders are the ones at fault. Upon Kuai Liang expressing how he himself should have somehow known that he was being lied to, Grandmaster Hasashi denies it saying ‘You were young, therefore impressionable. The elders saw your innocence regarding Li, and so they took it upon themselves to mold her character to fit their narrative, one they failed to push unto Bi-Han, it seems.’ Despite it, Kuai Liang cannot help but express his guilt regarding her fate once more, saying ‘All I hope is that she is well’, receiving an agreeing nod from the pyromancer.

Chapter 5: Truths Revealed (Jade)

While not present in this chapter as she still resides within the undisclosed location mentioned by Kronika, she is mentioned by several people within the chapter.

Amidst Raiden & Cetrion’s conversation, Cetrion reveals to Raiden that while Shinnok’s decapitation was the capstone to Raiden’s dark counterpart to be eliminated, the part of Shinnok’s soul which lives on within another vessel (which she does not disclose to be Li) is currently not powerful enough to compensate purely for Shinnok despite it having strengthened within years, yet she further explains how, once that part of Shinnok kills the vessel’s owner’s soul, that he will be able to overtake the vessel as his own and therefore being able to maintain the balance once the timeline is restarted.

Upon Raiden’s words on how ‘You will not succeed’, Cetrion reveals that amidst everything already failing for Raiden and his allies, Shinnok cannot be stopped as the vessel’s owner (Li) grows weaker with each passing second, saying ‘She (Li) has halted my brother’s plans for far too long. There is none that can be done to assist her. She will fail soon.’

After such, she is not mentioned any longer in the chapter.

Chapter 6: War On The Homefront (Johnny Cage)

While not present in this chapter as she still resides within the undisclosed location mentioned by Kronika, she is mentioned by several people within the chapter.

Amidst recalling to his Earthrealm heroes of what happened, Raiden does not fail to mention what Cetrion said to him regarding a part of Shinnok’s soul surviving within another undisclosed vessel that was only referred to as ‘She’. Such information brings worry and confusion alike to the group, with Jacqui & Cassie exchanging a gaze of worry and mild panic.

Once the group is dismissed, Jacqui pulls Cassie aside as to speak with her privately; Jacqui begins the conversation via expressing her worry on how they’re at a huge disadvantage if the vessel narrative is indeed true, to which Cassie agrees to. Jacqui continues the conversation by saying ‘I can’t believe it’s not just a legend’, receiving an agreeing yet bitter nod by Cassie, her negative feelings toward the situation not faltering, even upon Jacqui’s words of ‘It’s always said that she (Li) did have the best intentions’ to which Cassie retorts with ‘Yeah, well, look how that’s turning out’ before turning away with a frustrated groan as to hide her angered expression. Once seconds of silence pass by, Cassie herself speaks up once more by saying how Raiden should be informed of this legend, yet Jacqui states that it would be pointless as it doesn’t reveal the vessel’s identity, meaning that it would only be a useless piece of information to thrust upon the Thunder God. Contemplating her friend’s words, Cassie eventually sees that Jacqui is indeed correct, causing her to reel back on her previous statement.

Because of this conversation between the two, it is majorly hinted that Li’s arcade ending in MKX became a legend on how a ‘mysterious figure took it upon herself to make sure Shinnok would permanently lose his full might as to assure the realms of his defeat, yet overconfidence led to the figure’s downfall’, an indicator that the arcade ending was slightly altered.

After such, she is not mentioned any longer in the chapter.

Chapter 7: Coming Of Age (Kitana)

Upon the Revenants expressing their displeasure and worry for their current disadvantage as they lost both the Black Dragon & the Outworld armies, Kronika doesn’t fail to mention that her work in Shang Tsung’s Island is near its end, alongside her work within Li’s body remaining untouched by Li’s allies, revealing that she has begun to assist Shinnok against Li within Li’s body, hoping to assure Shinnok’s victory.

Chapter 9: All In The Family (Jax Briggs & Jacqui Briggs)

Chapter 10: Gambit (Shang Li)

Li’s body still residing within the undisclosed location Kronika mentioned, a closed eye Cetrion floats near Li’s chained & unmoving body, her magic concentrated toward Li’s body as to assist Shinnok’s battle against Li within the body. With Kronika appearing amidst a swirl of sand once the third battle concludes with Shinnok’s victory over Li, she begins to question Cetrion on the progress; opening her eyes as her expression shows conflict, Cetrion explains that Li’s immortality is greater than anticipated through the fact that no matter how she is harmed by both Shinnok and herself, Li’s soul fails to die as it simply recovers mere seconds after it was seemingly killed. Such a revelation angers Kronika as she realizes that their efforts are, then, in vain; she proceeds to instruct Cetrion to extract Shinnok’s soul from Li’s body, who does so despite her misgivings upon such an order.

Li’s appearance changing once the extraction is done as Cetrion keeps her brother’s soul close to her person, Kronika begins to speak to Li once she awakens, giving her bitter compliments upon her persistence and strength against Shinnok, to which Li gives a simple exhausted smile at; Kronika proceeds to explain that, no matter what magic made her immortal, it will be undone by herself and Cetrion alike, taunting her that she stands no chance once it is done. Upon the Titan’s words, Li tiredly explains that no person can reverse the spell, explaining that her brother made sure no person could kill her in order for nobody to separate them from one another, yet she also gives a bitter and sorrowful chuckle with the words ‘It seems as if he (Shang Tsung) thought of me before himself’, which earns a mocking smirk from Kronika. Despite Li’s sure words upon the matter, Cetrion assures her that such a spell will be undone as her and her mother’s magic alike is no comparison against Shang Tsung’s; upon such words, Li cannot help but fall silent for seconds to then speak the words ‘You all… so wish me dead’, earning a knowing silence from them.

Her answer to her bitter and sorrowful remark clear, Li agrees to reveal information she had hidden all these years, information that Shinnok’s torture failed to extract from her, which captures Kronika’s & Cetrion’s attention as they urge her to continue; Li explains that while no person can kill her, there is one object can do such a thing, something that she herself created shortly after Shang Tsung’s death as a way to meet her brother in death, yet she never got a chance to use it ever since Shinnok’s intrusion within her body. Such information earns a victorious glint from Kronika yet a sorrowful & pitiful one from Cetrion, who questions Li’s motives for revealing such information at a moment like this; Li admits that there is no true reason for her to keep living anymore as she has lost everyone she ever cared for, as well as Kronika’s work not being able to be stopped, mentioning ‘I resisted all these years in hopes of returning by Fujin’s side, yet too many years have come to pass for him to recall me. Tell me, what does anybody gain if I am kept alive?’ which earns further sorrow from Cetrion.

Upon learning this information, Kronika does not hesitate to encourage Li to summon the object she mentioned, to which the sorceress does as she was encouraged to; summoning a pitch black potion within a simple yet captivating bottle, Li explains ‘All you need do is allow me to come in contact with it’; Cetrion being instructed by Kronika to assist Li with the potion as the sorceress remains chained, Cetrion obeys her mother’s words, proceeding to grab the bottle, popping off its cork and feeding it to the sorceress.

The potion being completely downed by Li within seconds, Cetrion sets the empty bottle aside and steps back; both her and Kronika alike allow Li to speak her final words before her soul painfully caves in on itself, leading to Li’s passing. Mere moments later, Cetrion guides Shinnok’s soul within Li’s vacant body, allowing the fallen Elder God to take full control of Li’s body, pleased to find her powers completely intact as well as the easy ability to fuse his own powers with her own within the body.

The chains being undone from Li’s body, Shinnok cannot contain his twisted happiness upon his victory, speaking ‘It was about time that pest died’, to then thank her mother and sister alike.

Chapter 11: To Hell & Back (Scorpion)

Once Cetrion is defeated by Fire God Liu Kang, Kronika doesn’t hesitate to summon Shinnok; shocked by the mention of the fallen Elder God’s name, Fire God Liu Kang grows confused once he sees Li’s body, a figure currently unfamiliar to him given her new attire, yet once Kronika taunts the Fire God by telling him that he’d have no heart to kill such a familiar face, Fire God Liu Kang realizes that the figure before him is indeed Li’s body as he calls her by her former codename ‘Apex’, thinking it is in fact Li herself, to which Shinnok taunts with the words ‘She always despised that name’ to then explain what had occurred for himself to be present within Li’s body.

With Fire God Liu Kang swallowing his unsureness of his victory upon faced against such grand power, he prepares to battle Shinnok, yet his firm expression falters into one of disgust mere seconds later as he keeps on gazing at Shinnok (Li’s body); seeing the battle not beginning, Kronika calls out to Shinnok (Li’s body) firmly and encourages the battle to begin. Earning only a pained sound from Shinnok (Li’s body), Kronika grows impatient of such a moment and turns Shinnok (Li’s body) to face her, yet her face falls to disgust and shock alike upon setting her sights onto the face; Li’s body’s eyes absent with the mouth agape as if dead, Li’s body begins to disintegrate in a manner which causes Shinnok (Li’s body) to scream out in pure pain, his final words being ‘She (Li) tricked us!’ before the body disintegrating into nothing, causing Shinnok’s soul to pass as well.

Shocked, Kronika cannot help but be stunned for seconds upon the revelation; how astutely Li had tricked them angered Kronika, yet she cannot help the hint of admiration as she herself knows it is not easy to manipulate a Titan. Yet her moment of twisted admiration is short lived upon Fire God Liu Kang’s mocking her of the situation with the words ‘If there is one thing she and her brother shared, it was their sharp intellect’, to which Kronika rebuts by saying that because of Li’s action, Shang Tsung will find himself alone as to atone for his sister’s actions.

After such, she is not mentioned not seen any longer in the chapter as she completely passed away.

Yet once the Hourglass came into our possession, her and I failed to agree on how to create the New Era as we both wished it to be drastically different; while I had plans to elevate the Netherrealm to its peak, she wished to reconstruct her late husband in ‘hopes of rebuilding the life they once had’. Truly, did she believe I would allow such a pathetic endeavor to come to pass? Frankly, I still wonder why I even bothered to entertain her wishes… perhaps, it was to simply feed her the illusion of choice, so I may bathe within her delicious desperation…

Now, as the Netherrealm stands all-powerful with my vessel’s family and friends alike in loyal servitude to me, her desperate attempts to still battle me truly delight me…

‘I still have purpose as long as they stand!’ she constantly rebuts with such a… hopeful naïveté… Hm, truly, how further deluded can she get?

The New Era will truly be her nightmare. Something I, personally, cannot wait to revel in…”

Trivia

- While in previous games it was speculated that the Lin Kuei elders did not like Bi-Han’s bond with Li, Kuai Liang’s confession confirms that such a fact is indeed true and not a mere speculation.

- It is confirmed that Noob Saibot’s attitude toward Shang Li drastically changed; such is never confirmed why, yet it is not difficult to assume it is because of the extended corruption he went through throughout these past years.

- Bi-Han’s ring around her neck is something she no longer wears; it is speculated its reasoning was Shinnok, who took it away and tossed it elsewhere as to torture Li emotionally.

- As stated previously, Vocal Magic is known for its corruption of the holder; thankfully, it is an effect which Li does not fall victim to as Shinnok’s intrusion within her mind halted the effects.

- As stated at the beginning, Li is no longer a hybrid; such an effect began to take place once she acquired Vocal Magic, intensifying once Shinnok possessed her and coming to pass years within the fallen Elder God���s intrusion.

- The burn she has in place of her former tattoo still remains.

- Li herself died blaming herself of her & other’s fates as well as believing that it has been far too many years for her to return back to Fujin’s side as she believes he has forgotten about her, much like everyone else she was close to did, while none of those statements are the truth of the matter. Such thoughts & convictions are a product of Shinnok’s tortures unto her, who manipulated her into believing that four decades have passed ever since his first possession, amongst many other far more horrid lies.

- Because of the previous mentioned point, Li believes that her fate stands with the man who she believes never forgot her; Bi-Han, which is why she attempted to convince Shinnok within her body to have some mercy on her and use the Hourglass to reconstruct him, yet such never came to pass.

- It is confirmed that Shang Tsung made his sister immortal; such was done by the sorcerer as so they may never be separated by any person who dares to try, yet he never accounted for himself coming to pass, which is when his idea backfired on the twins upon his death from Shao Kahn. In desperation, Li used her brother’s materials & managed to create a potion which would reverse her brother’s spell as well as disintegrate her body alongside whatever life essence may remain within it shortly after his death in hopes of meeting him in death. Thankfully, she never got to use it when she planned to because of Fujin’s introduction within her life.

- It is mentioned several times how Shinnok’s essence ‘evolved’ within Li’s body, being referred to as ‘his soul’ instead of ‘his essence’ at some point within MK11; because of this, it is indirectly implied that Shinnok’s essence which Li had extracted previously in MKX somehow evolved into a soul, especially once Shinnok was decapitated, seemingly transferring his soul to the only other living part of himself which resided within Li.

- While it was speculated previously that Li & Fujin developed a romantic connected down the line of their companionship, it is confirmed here in many ways, more so by how he is stated in the ‘Relationship’ section.

Storyline

Chapter 1: Johnny Cage

Seen at the Sky Temple fighting alongside Fujin & Raiden bearing a new appearance alongside unknown sorcery; it is seen to be activated through singing vocalizations which causes opponents to either be severely harmed or be gifted a slow death, yet she herself continues to practice her martial arts alongside this sorcery. In addition, she is seen to fight primarily alongside Fujin, the two acting as duo amidst the battle as it is obvious she mainly follows his flow as opposed to Raiden’s. Upon Quan Chi’s arrival, Li finds herself unable to contain her rage & utter hate toward the man upon his mockery toward herself and her late family, vocalizing a melody which causes Quan Chi to slowly fall to his knees as he begins to gasp for air, failing to summon his own sorcery to retaliate; still taken over by rage, Li shifts to vocalize once more, causing a green aura to exude from the sorcerer as she is seemingly initiating an extraction of some sort, yet Fujin breaks the dark spell through a summoned wind current which pulls her backward toward him. Angered, Li pushes Fujin away and turns to gaze at him, yet Fujin only returns a stern look to Li with the words ‘The consequences are not worth it…’, causing a silent understanding to break her anger. Shifting back their attention to Quan Chi once he stands, he mocks Li for allowing anger to overtake her, yet a deep panic is seen within the sorcerer’s eyes, despite his bravado, as he is unbelieved by her newfound powers.

After such, she is not present nor mentioned for some time.

Seen once more alongside Fujin & Raiden fighting off the revenants’s attacks, her gaze falters back to Quan Chi as part of her attention falls upon the man, distracting her and weakening her attacks as a consequence, a pained yelp leaving her lips as Sindel’s revenant kicks her toward the nearby wall, dazing her shortly as she takes a hard blow to the back of her head, yet she is seen on her feet once more after extensive seconds as she rushes to help Fujin recover from Sindel’s revenant attacks, the two exchanging a nod. Blasted into the wall and nearly sucked into the amulet with the brothers, Johnny Cage’s intervention prevents such, causing her to begin to stand up yet only to be knocked down alongside Fujin, sending the pair on the ground near each other, incapacitated alongside the Wind God. Seen once more alongside Kenshi & Fujin, Fujin signals Li to come along with him and his brother, which she follows through with no question.

After such, she not present nor mentioned for the rest of the chapter.

Chapter 2: Kotal Kahn

Not present nor mentioned in this chapter, yet she is believed to be with Fujin, her state alive and well.

Chapter 3: Sub-Zero

Seen fleeing from the Lin Kuei temple gripping a bag filled with unknown items, she quickly escapes the scene upon noting the previous commotion ended; with a handful of Lin Kuei assassins taking note of her intrusion from the outskirts of the temple, Li quickens her pace as she grips the bag tighter, escaping from the premises before Sub-Zero can take notice.

After such, she is not present nor mentioned any longer in the chapter, being chased down by the Lin Kuei assassins.

Chapter 4: ‘Apex’

Sharp breaths escaping her as she flees, she finds her running beginning to be halted the more she nears her destination, knowing well she cannot have especially Lin Kuei strangers know of her private life; halting and shifting to face the small group, Li begs them to turn away and leave as she does not wish to harm them, yet the assassins persistence at capturing her give her no choice but to battle them as to drive them away.

One by one at first, she defeats them surprisingly easily, giving the hushed comment of ‘The assassins were this weak even back then?’ the more she fells as the battle presses on; as expected, Li wins the fights against the assassins, now encouraging them to leave the premises as she does not wish a worse fate to fall upon them. Painfully and painstakingly, the assassins gather their bearings and leave the scene, some hanging their heads low in shame while others grumble in anger; gathering her own bearings after watching the group depart, Li checks the bag and assures that all its item are within it before retaking her leave toward her destination, drinking healing potions along the way in order to ease her aches and wounds.

Landing within the Sky Temple, Li is quickly accosted by Fujin who wastes no time in questioning where she had been upon seeing her snow covered clothes alongside the mysterious bag she carries within her grasp; Li, although, is quick to dismiss the Wind God’s worried questioning as she rushes to her private chambers, the bag tight within her grasp. Upon reaching her chambers, Li empties the bag upon her bed and tosses the empty bag aside, gazing down at its contents in a sorrowful manner; a blue and black mask, a thin black belt with a simple silver buckle, a black box containing a golden wedding band and a framed picture of a smiling couple. Suspected to be her husband’s belongings at first glance, so is confirmed upon her sorrowful whisper of his name as she gazes down at the picture, the couple in question being her and Bi-Han.

Her heart skipping a beat upon hearing a soft knock at her door, Li is quick to retrieve the bag she tossed aside and refilling it with her husband’s belongings, hiding it away before she answers the intrusion; giving a faux smile upon locking gaze with the Wind God, Li does her very best in dismissing her earlier behaviour, yet Fujin is able to see through her rather easily, unwilling to take her lies upon her wellbeing. His worried manner toward her eventually break her act, a small string of apologies as she explains what she had done; how she had broken into the Lin Kuei temple and stolen as many of Bi-Han’s belongings as the bag could carry, speaking ‘I cannot be expected to have nothing of his! Even memories fade, Fujin!’. Yet her moment of immense sorrow calms down slowly but surely once Fujin gently embraces her, letting her bury her face within his shoulder.

Pulling away from one another, Li gives a grateful smile and a final pat on his shoulder as she thanks him for assisting her in such a dark moment; yet she finds herself surprised once she notices his expression shift to a more serious and somber one during seconds of silence, her heart skipping a beat in anxiety upon his sudden shift. Patiently waiting for him to break the silence while placing both her hands upon his shoulders and gazing up at him within his eyes, the Wind God recalls what she had done to Quan Chi time ago, giving somewhat of a plea to never perform such a spell upon anybody again as its consequences to it are of a caliber she cannot handle. He finds his heart weight lesser and a small smile to his face once Li continues his words, a phrase he often spoke to her these past years; ‘Vocal Magic is never meant to coexist with other dark magics, as it will corrupt its holder’, yet despite her knowing of such, Fujin is well aware that the sorceress loses reason when confronted with her grandest enemies, vengeance for her husband’s killing weighing heavily upon her heart. Despite her knowing of such as well alongside the fact that both Fujin & Raiden had scolded and warned her of such ever since she attempted the spell, Li cannot help but apologize for her unwise actions as well as vowing to take more caution, just as she has always done once the topic is brought up to discussion, yet she adds the new comment of ‘He and his master deserve that fate and so much worse. I will be the one to end their meaningless existence’ before the end of the confrontation; while he agrees of her rightful hate toward them, he once more tells her to take caution. In the end, he assures her that no matter where she’d be, he’d find his way to her with the comment ‘The wind is always with you, Li’ to which she gives a fond and grateful smile of, knowing well he means that wholly.

Ridden with rage upon it all, she quickly flees.

Seen to be hidden away in the shadows as she lays her gaze upon Quan Chi & Scorpion, Li watches sadistically as Scorpion ends Quan Chi’s life; a grin upon her lips with widened eyes that shine with twisted pleasure. She flees the scene once the crowd disperses, knowing her presence would cause too much of a stir.

“Shinnok’s downfall gave the sorceress little security of the Elder God’s defeat, aware of how temporary an Elder God’s death is. In attempt to rid all realms of Shinnok’s evil, Li takes the decision to absorb Shinnok’s essence, severely overestimating her prowess amidst her selfless and angered act. Quickly realizing her grave error, the sorceress’s attempts to halt the merge proves futile as Shinnok’s darkness fuses with her own, quickly breaking her down into a spiral of pure insanity, feeling every inch of her body and mind taken over from the corruption, too weak to resist its influence. Fujin and Raiden intervene without hesitation, yet it proves a poor and deadly mistake: void of all reason, Li’s overwhelming power tears through the brothers’s own with no struggle, striking them down with ease as Fujin’s pleas fall deaf to her heart. Satisfied with her work, the sorceress flees once incapacitating the brothers, her high-pitched, hysterical cackle fills Raiden’s mind and Fujin’s heart with pure despair: no matter their efforts, no matter Fujin’s affections toward Li, Raiden’s vision couldn’t be prevented.”

Trivia

- It is stated that the necklace around her neck with a golden ring charm is her husband’s wedding band; she crafted the necklace once she stole the ring from the Lin Kuei compound, such confirmed upon her model change after her chapter is completed. She herself no longer wears her own wedding band.

- After Bi-Han’s death, Kuai Liang has made no effort in integrating Li; it is known that Kuai Liang has refused for her to set foot within the temple, reason of which Li resorted to steal Bi-Han’s belongings that were left stored away within the temple.

- Kuai Liang’s reason for Li’s dislike, even near hate, still remains unknown.

- Despite it seeming as if Li has forgotten her brother, she deeply mourns him; within her chambers, she has made a small altar which she speaks to each night she is there, carrying his green gem upon her belt every time.

- Vocal Magic is one of the most deadly dark magics to have ever existed as it is prone to corrupting its holder if it comes in contact with another type of dark magic, its holder losing complete sense of self as they turn deep into darkness and evil, selfishness and gruesomeness as a consequence; through a simple vocalization of a melody, anything the holder thinks toward a specific target(s) comes to reality as a gruesome spell. Such is seen in chapter 1 upon the opposition’s gruesome ends as she is battle-focused toward ending their lives.

- Upon Li’s acquiring of Vocal Magic, she shed her past identity in every manner she could; ridding of her shapeshifting abilities, suppressing her tiger nature she once so adored as well as shedding her name ‘Apex’.

- Li’s snow patterned tattoo upon her right leg is gone as she has refused to have her leg’s skin healed, fearing it would restore the tattoo.

- Upon her corruption, it is assumed Fujin fell victim to a spiral of sadness; watching the woman he holds so dear to his heart succumb to such a fate broke him. Alongside him, Raiden cannot help the self-blame he puts himself through. Both brothers are aware that now Li is their enemy, something that harms Fujin deep to his core.

- It is known that Li gifted Fujin the headpiece he wears; upon her corruption he couldn’t bring himself to wear it, yet he never disposed of it.

Identity V | New Hunter | Bride & Groom Background Story

[Trigger Warnings: typical canon violence/typical grim-like hunter backstory]

‘Everything was meant to be so simple; help a desperate husband find his runaway wife.’

Gazing down at the letter for his colleague, the doushin gives a sigh “Another one for him? People sure do rely on him a lot…” He mumbles to himself, a small sense of irritation clouding over his respect for his colleague.

Approaching the addressee’s office, the doushin’s commanding voice booms through the halls, attracting other doushin’s gazes “Doushin Atsuki!” He speaks up, to then knock on the opened office door, causing Atsuki to give a simple hum of acknowledgment to his colleague’s call to him as he keeps his focus on his paperwork laid upon his desk “Another runaway wife case for you…” The doushin speaks with a sigh as he enters the office, placing the closed letter upon his desk as he fixes his gaze downward toward Atsuki “Again?” Atsuki grumbles, placing his quill down to then grab the letter and open it “How did this become the most common occurrence this month?” He wonders out loud in his usual stoic tone, yet the glint of worry in his eyes betray his supposed indifference.

“Tell me about it…” The doushin’s annoyed voice rings in the room as he crosses his arms, his gaze unshifted from Atsuki “If women stayed where they belonged, we’d all be better off…” The doushin speaks with a sense of cockiness to his voice, as if expecting a sound agreement from Atsuki.

At such a distasteful remark, Atsuki finds himself biting his inner cheek, successfully suppressing his grunt of anger yet failing to silence his words “And you wonder why you sleep in the guest chambers…” He bites back coldly, his tone suggesting he knows more than he’s letting on.

“Pardon?” The doushin’s raised voice filled with offense rings in Atsuki’s office as he uncrosses his arms, his gaze betraying the embarrassment he feels deep within his heart to have a fellow doushin know of how poor his relationship with his wife is “Are you deaf atop of being a cuckquean?” Atsuki comments in a disgusted tone, unable to hold in the disgust toward his fellow doushin for his poor actions “Leave, will you? I’ve a case!” Atsuki booms, uncharacteristically showing his anger as he shoots up from his chair and slams his hand upon his desk, his gaze fixed on the doushin.

Merely giving a deep grunt of anger, the doushin stares back at Atsuki with fire beneath his gaze, finding himself rattled by Atsuki’s uncommon rudeness toward himself.

‘But such a task grows heavy on the heart and mind when the runaway is your own sister…

I was meant to protect her, to shield her from the cruel world, to not let her become just another case.’

Involuntarily slamming the door closed as he entered his home, Atsuki gives a deep sigh once he pauses his rushed and heavy footsteps, dropping his bag near the door “Dearest?” Manami speaks with worry upon setting her gaze on her angered husband “Are you well? What happened?” She questions softly, walking to him to then brush a lock of his long black hair away from his face, her worried gaze peering into his own.

Cupping his cheek and brushing her thumb across his skin, Atsuki’s gaze softens significantly as he nuzzles into her loving touch “Forgive me, love… I…” Atsuki begins, the tremble in his tone betraying the depth of his angst as his eyes come to a close.

Planting a kiss upon Manami’s palm, he wastes no time in wrapping his strong arms around her smaller frame and pulling her into a deep hug, a silent action she knows the meaning of all too well “Atsuki…” She whispers softly and worriedly, wrapping her arms around him as well and placing a hand on the back of his head once he buries his face within the crook of her neck, his grip on her growing tighter as they embrace, his breathing growing deeper as his heart pounds harder against his chest, practically telling himself to let go. He can only endure so much.

“My sister…” Atsuki begins meekly, a far cry from the typical stoic doushin the community grew to rely on all these years “Michiko went missing… Mr. Miles communicated it within his most recent letter to me…” He concludes, the tremble in his voice increasing the more he spoke.

Upon the revelation, Manami found herself struck by a deep sense of dread and worry; pulling away as Atsuki does so himself, Manami keeps her hands gripping his own, her thumbs softly caressing the backs of his hands as she peers into his utterly panicked, glazes over gaze “I was meant to protect her… I swore that I’d never let her become just another one of my cases…” He speaks in a broken tone, the tears within his eyes only accumulating as seconds pass by “Atsuki-“ Manami begins gently, shifting her hand to once more cup his cheek, yet his broken tone cuts her off “I swore I’d protect her, no matter where she’d be!” Atsuki breaks, his tears now beginning to flow down his cheeks as he looks down at his wife, who seems to be near her tipping point as her own tears threaten to spill.

“I-I failed her, Manami…” He sobs softly, shifting once more to pull her in an embrace; never has Manami seen her husband this beaten…

And it broke her heart into pieces.

“Dearest…” She begins gently, embracing him tightly as he buries his face in her neck once more “It isn’t your fault…” She states softly, brushing his long black hair in between her fingers as she speaks “It’ll be okay, my dear…” She comforts him, the sounds of his suppressed sobs increasingly breaking her as they kept on filling their otherwise silent home “We’ll depart to see Mr. Miles as soon as we can, yes?” She speaks, a hint of guess in her gentle tone.

Softly nodding his head at her proposal, Atsuki found himself giving a small smile at such an accurate guess from his wife “You read my mind, love…” He states with a hint of a chuckle, shifting his face away from her neck and pressing his forehead against her own “Thank you…” His soft words whisper in Manami’s ears, as if only reserved to her heart.

‘To so suddenly lose one you love deeply broke my darling’s heart in a way not even I could appease… Perhaps if I’d been… ‘normal’… the future could have been prevented… could it have?’

“I could wear a cap to cover my hair…” Manami suggests with a hint of hopefulness within her tone, crossing her arms as she gazes up at her husband “A mask as well!” She suggests further, doing her best to keep a positive outlook in an all too familiar situation “I know, my love…” Atsuki speaks gently, looking down at his wife with a gaze as soft and warm as his tone “But I’d rather you’d stay back at the house…” He suggests further in the same manner, causing Manami to give a small frown at the familiar suggestion “You’d be safer there, love…” He speaks unchanged, cupping her cheek.

Planting a kiss upon her forehead, Atsuki keeps his eyes set on her “If others were kinder, you’d come, my love…” He concludes, his gaze softening the more he looks at her; seeing his wife so saddened, especially for an asset out of her control, gave him a profound sense of guilt.

Pulling away from Manami, Atsuki lets his touch on her cheek linger for seconds more as he creates distance, yet his gaze never leaves hers “I am sorry the community isn’t kinder to you, Ms. Manami…” Miles offers his apologies softly as he shifts his gaze toward her with a kind apologetic smile on his face, his gaze then shifting to Atsuki as to offer the same apology silently “I am as well…” She replies with a small bow and a kind tone “Please be cautious out there… both of you…” She pleads, her worried gaze peering into both mens’s own “We will…” Atsuki assures, Miles giving the same silent reassurance as he keeps his gaze downward to the shorter woman “You stick with Mr. Donnelly, seeing you with someone-“ Atsuki begins with the same worried yet firm tone, only to be cut off by her soft knowing sigh “-Will deter others…” She concludes her husband’s sentence with a knowing smile “I know, dearest…” She affirms in the same manner, planting a kiss upon his cheek before the two men depart, exchanging a wave with Miles as well.

‘To believe I’d end up contributing to my dearest’s anguish makes me utterly sick…’

Manami can feel her heart pounding as if in her throat the more she reads the words upon the yellow paper “She…” Manami’s disbelieved tone comes out in a whisper, her gaze widened as it stays fixed on the letter.

“He killed her…” She speaks to herself with an unchanged tone, the pounding within her chest increasing the more she read.

In a sudden rush fueled by pure panic, Manami folds the letter and hides it within her pocket, her trembling hands reaching for the door as to open it and rush out “I-I need to leave…” She whispers to herself, the tremble of her hands as if spreading to all parts and corners of her body “I can’t stay… We can’t stay…” She whispers once more, her vision clouded by welled up tears as her tone begins to break “Atsuki…” She whimpers to herself as she stuffs their belongings into her bag, her darling’s name only calming her down so much.

“What are you doing?” Mr. Donnelly’s voice rings in the air as he speaks with the same snarling tone, his gaze calculated on Manami as if trying to understand what she’s hiding from him “J-just… a walk…” She speaks in faux casualty, her trembling fingers gripping her bag as her teary gaze occasionally fixes on his calculated one “With your luggage?” He retorts in cold disbelief, his calculated gaze unmoved from her person.

At the observation, Manami felt her heart drop to stomach in despair, yet with her grip on her bag tightening, she gathered what little hope she has left shining in her heart “T-the sun gets more intense a-around this time which forces me to carry a change as to s-shield myself from it…” She explains with the same faux tone, hoping that the man would believe her words and let her be “Your husband said you shouldn’t be leaving the house.”

Those words felt as if the final nail in the coffin was set in. And the more he inched closer to her, the more that feeling within Manami’s chest grew “I…” She begins once more, her faux casual demeanor melting away quickly below his cold and angry gaze “Did you go in my office?” He accuses coldly and angrily as his stare pierces within her own.

Her back meeting the nightstand, Manami realizes he had pushed her in a vulnerable spot; her own mind was screaming at her to leave. At any cost.

Swinging the bag to Mr. Donnelly’s face, Manami kicks him in his kneepit to then rush away with the bag in her hands “You bitch!” His enraged tone rings through the house as he turns his head toward Manami’s direction; with a snarl, he pushes past his pain to then grab the scissors which rest upon the desk, moving toward the door and rushing to chase down Manami as she moves toward the exit.

‘Everything was meant to be so simple…’

Within his chest, Atsuki’s heart feels to have slowed down the more he listened to the authorities’s words hit his ears “Killed?” His meek tone comes out as a weak whisper, his gaze clouded by welled up tears as he stares at the ground “No…” He speaks in the same tone, his gaze shifting toward the authorities…

‘…How did I end up losing it all?!’

“Mr. Atsuki, we are truly sorry…” One speaks with sympathy in his tone as he gazes down at Atsuki “The killer still hasn’t been identified, but when they are-“ “NO!” Atsuki cuts the man off with a booming shout as he stands up from his chair.

At the outburst, Miles wastes no time in standing up with him and placing his hands on his shoulders as if holding him back the best he could “Mr. Atsuki-” Miles’s worried tone rings in the air as he speaks to him “She was okay when we left!” He speaks again with an unchanged tone, his gaze fixed on the somber authorities as they exchange a sorrowful look “She was-” Atsuki begins again, his gaze shifting toward Miles “She was okay…” He states again, his tone breaking as he spoke those words.

Looking deep within Miles’s eyes as if searching for any sort of confirmation that this wasn’t real, the tears fall from his eyes as he gives him a shake of his head “I’m… I know…” He whispers to him with somberful sympathy “I’m so sorry…” Miles speaks again, keeping his gaze into Atsuki’s own.

“No… My Manami…” He breaks, his legs giving out from underneath him; Miles’s arms around him as he caught him gave him nothing. It did not quell his suffering.

Nothing would. And he knew it.

‘Without my love, I am nothing but an empty vessel… A failure, a joke. Someone unworthy to live…

And I was more than happy to welcome my trusted blade within my heart.’

‘As I felt the Grim’s cold embrace enveloping me, all I could think of was my dearest…

“Twin sister to Shang Tsung, Li always has been her brother’s biggest support much like he has been hers. Storyline

Act I

Chapter 1: Johnny Cage

Walking alongside Shang Tsung, Apex stays silent and merely observes her twin’s interactions with the guests, giving her own wordless greeting as Shang Tsung introduces her as the second-to-last challenger of the tournament. Feeling angered on Johnny Cage’s insult to her brother, Apex attempts to attack him, only to be calmed by Shang Tsung as he assures her of the Earthrealmer’s sure defeat in the upcoming fights; she merely gives him a displeased snarl at her brother upon Cage’s victories and grows increasingly annoyed at the man’s uncompliance to ‘finish’ Baraka. Cockily, Johnny Cage gives Apex a light taunt upon seeing her utter anger to his victories, to which the tigress, bearing her sharp teeth and slit eyes, shouts an angry loud roar to the man, causing Cage to quickly shut up upon the display, commenting ‘I don’t feel like being mauled today’ under his breath. Being unable to keep to herself, she overhears the Earthrealmers conversation, her expression twisting in disgust at Cage’s preference to visit Sonya Blade which causes her to angrily growl ‘Incompetent idiots’ to both Reptile & Baraka, still unbelieved by Cage’s triumph in the last fight.

Chapter 2: Sonya Blade

Arriving moments before Sub-Zero’s defeat, Apex wastes no time in aiding her husband, to then roar & snarl a loudly to the lieutenant and threatening her heavily for wounding Sub-Zero; the Lin Kuei assassin gives his attempts of calming down his wife, yet to no avail as she gives him a low growl of warning that does not phase the cryomancer and only causes him to grab her shoulder in order to hold her back. Interrupted by Raiden’s intervention, Apex takes the opportunity to flee elsewhere as to aid her husband of his wounds.

Stalking Blade after her battle with Kano, Apex ambushes the lieutenant immediately after Kano’s & her brother’s departure; charging at her, Apex downs the tired lieutenant easily and buries her teeth in her side as well as deeply scratching various parts of her body. Once satisfied with her attack, the tigress pins the lieutenant on the nearest wall by her neck to the comment ‘Not even the Elder Gods can save you from a wife’s wrath’ before she tosses her harshly to the ground, fleeing from the scene with satisfaction of her work. Raiden, Liu Kang & Johnny Cage, upon spotting Blade in her injured state, rush to her, the Thunder God using his magic to heal both Blade & Briggs.

Chapter 3: Scorpion

Elsewhere for that day’s tournament, Apex is mentioned by Nightwolf upon challenging Scorpion who speaks that he should find other ways to find peace instead of seeking revenge as he could risk inflicting his same pain upon the tigress if Scorpion kills the cryomancer. Accusing Nightwolf of dishonoring his own kind and putting down Apex with his harsh comment of ‘May she burn in Hellfire for her sinful marriage with Sub-Zero!’, Scorpion defeats the shaman. After the fight, Raiden senses a vision of more dangerous & unstoppable threats arising if Scorpion kills Sub-Zero & Apex, he speaks to Scorpion & pleads him to spare the couple’s life on the condition that he will ask the Elder Gods to resurrect the Shirai Ryu if he does so, to which Scorpion reluctantly agrees to.

Walking in with Sub-Zero & giving a snarl of agreement to her husband’s taunt toward Scorpion, the pyromancer drags both Sub-Zero & Apex to the Netherrealm to engage in 2-on-1 kombat; upon the Lin Kuei couple’s defeat, Scorpion honors his agreement with Raiden & spares their lives, watching as Sub-Zero does his best to aid his wife. Distracted by Quan Chi’s vision of the Lin Kuei’s destruction of the Shirai Ryu as well as both Sub-Zero’s & Apex’s vision of them murdering Harumi & Satoshi, Scorpion quickly grows enraged; Sub-Zero & Apex alike plead Scorpion’s mercy as they tell him of the falsity of the visions, failing upon Scorpion removing his mask. Ignoring Apex’s pleads to not kill her husband, Scorpion attacks Sub-Zero as he ignores the cryomancer’s comment of ‘Kill me if it pleases you! But pease, don’t harm my wife!’ to which the pyromancer responds with ‘You both will meet in the lowest circle of Hell!’ to then kill him; shifting his attention to a desperate Apex, the pyromancer attacks her as well yet grows further enraged & displeased upon finding out of her immorality, no matter how fatal the wounds are. Quan Chi, equally displeased and surprised, curses the tigress with a painful spell, further sending Apex in a painful state.

Chapter 4: Cyrax

Upon Scorpion’s arrival with Sub-Zero’s charred skull & spine, Scorpion summons Apex, causing her unconscious & wounded body to appear to then leave soon after. Shang Tsung furiously accuses the pyromancer of his sister’s state under his breath, unable to mask his worry for her as he holds her; worried for the tigress, Cyrax & Sektor waste no time in rushing to her, proposing that they take Apex in their care as to allow the Lin Kuei healers to cure her, which causes Shang Tsung to curse at them and depart with his sister in his arms, furious at Scorpion for harming his sister.

After such, she is not seen nor mentioned in the rest of the chapter, being left in healing care by Shang Tsung’s most trusted healers.

Chapter 5: Apex

Waking up in her old room on her brother’s island, Apex proceeds to examine her various wounds on her body as she begins to self-medicate on the ones left uncovered; the tigress chooses to ignore her brother’s arrival, keeping her focus on her medication, giving a mere dull hum at her brother’s words of ‘How are you feeling, sister?’. Seeing her state, Shang Tsung gives a sigh, shifting to aid his sister and sitting her down, giving her a gentle yet firm look of care as he takes over her self-medication, remarking her as stubborn, which causes Apex to give a soft and quiet chuckle at his brother’s playful mockery to her, to then speak up with a mere grateful remark for his assistance, causing the sorcerer to give a simple hum of acknowledgement to her words.

Finishing his medication on her sister, Shang Tsung shifts to sit beside her after seconds of her remaining unmoved from her seated position, giving her a gentle nudge to her shoulder with his own; mere seconds later, Apex shifts to lean her head on his shoulder and close her eyes with a sorrowful expression, the sorcerer responding by leaning his own head on her own as to give her comfort, shifting to wrap her in a side-hug upon hearing her broken and meek words of ‘He ripped him to pieces and forced me to watch…’, wiping her tears away as the tigress begins to sob, recalling & recounting the events of her husband’s killing to her brother. Upon her somberful rant ending with her brother simply listening and offering comfort, Apex gives a shaky sigh followed by the words ‘Promise me you won’t leave me alone, Tsung…’ to which the sorcerer responds with ‘It always was my plan, sister…’ which causes the tigress to smile at her brother’s words.

With time passing as Apex remains on the island, she is seen turning her head to a specific direction, her demeanor a careful & alerted one as she begins to inch toward her pointed direction; hiding from sight upon arriving close enough to observe the situation, she finds herself falling into surprise as she sees herself locked in an argument with both Cyrax & Sektor as they exchange words regarding her coming to the Lin Kuei temple as she would find herself more comfortable there, only for herself to reject the two’s words, a fight againts Cyrax beginning to then another fight againts Sektor beginning once she defeats Cyrax with ease, defeating Sektor with ease as well. Upon the two Lin Kuei’s defeat, she speaks ‘Leave, before my brother finds you…’ which causes the defeated Liu Kuei to reluctantly depart, understanding that they’ve mettled far too much. Revealing herself once the two Lin Kuei leave, she addresses her own image with ‘What have you done, brother?’ Ain a frustrated manner with a dull undertone, causing her image to shift into Shang Tsung’s who retorts with ‘You may trust them with your well-being, but I do not. Their well-deserved wounds are not my issue given their stubbornness in ‘wishing to help you’.’ to which Apex answers with her own scolding remark of ‘You could have simply spoken with them. They never gave me any reason to fight them.’ to which the sorcerer answers with a crossed arm scoff as he gazes at her, responding with ‘Now they have.’. Giving a sigh, Apex pauses for seconds, to then cross her own arms as she gazes up at her brother with the words ‘I could have dealt with them.’ which causes Shang Tsung to retort with ‘And you believe I would have let you, given your state?’ to which she answers with ‘Must you always be so overbearing on me when it comes to the Lin Kuei?’ in a rather frustrated manner. At her words, Shang Tsung finds himself stung by offense by them as he answers with ‘Since when is a brother protecting his incapacitated sister overbearing?’ in his own frustrated manner, causing Apex to retort with ‘I need no protection!’ in a stubborn nature, which causes Shang Tsung to retort with ‘Given your state, you do…’ to which Apex gives a growl at him, to then turn her heel and depart, casing Shang Tsung to give an exasperated sigh followed by ‘Always the injured temper tantrums…’ with a shake of the head.

Upon time passing once more, Apex eventually locates her brother once again, looking at him with stubborn silence as he gazes back at her with expectant silence, merely raising a brow, giving a soft & small smile at her apology of her actions; pinching her cheek & gently tugging at it, the sorcerer accepts his sister’s apology and ushers her off to get back to the healers.

Chapter 6: Liu Kang

While she is not present in this chapter as she is stated to still be healing, she is mentioned several times by various people, more so by Shang Tsung.

The sorcerer mentioned his sister often as to excuse her absence in the tournament whilst lying about her reason for her absence with ‘She is out on family matters, none else is your concern’ to those who question him of her.

She is mentioned by Raiden’s champions in idle chatter, especially through Kung Lao’s words of ‘At least it’s one less champion to defeat’ followed by Liu Kang’s ‘Would it kill you to show sympathy?’ accompanied by a nod of agreement to Liu Kang’s remark from Jax.

She is mentioned by Raiden later in the chapter, who questions the sorcerer of her condition upon seeing his revitalized condition, not revealing to the sorcerer of his recent visions he had of the tigress, yet the sorcerer’s answer to the question remains the same, irritated by the Thunder God’s instance of wishing to know her condition.

Act II

Chapter 7: Jax

Chapter 8: Smoke

While she is not present in this chapter as she is stated to still be healing, she is mentioned several times by various people.

Smoke & Tundra mention the tigress after they speak of Sub-Zero, stating ‘Is it safe to leave her with the sorcerer?’ by Smoke, to which Tundra answers with ‘You should be glad she is no longer an obstruction to us’, causing Smoke to give a rather exasperated sigh at the younger cryomancer, expecting such an answer. After seconds of silence, Smoke speaks up on the manner once more with ‘I understand you’re not fond of her, but have some compassion, even if little’ which causes Tundra to retort with ‘She was my brother’s wife, not mine. I’m under no obligation to like her’, leading to Smoke to retort with ‘Compassion is human, Kuai Liang, not linked to relations’, causing Tundra giving him a narrowed-eyed scoff which leads Smoke to drop the matter with a suppressed sigh of irritation. Their irritated silence is dissipated once they split apart and begin their mission.

Once encountering Shang Tsung with Kano, Smoke demands both Sub-Zero’s & Apex’s whereabouts, leading to a fight against Kano upon his offering to take care of him without charge, to which Smoke defeats him quickly. Confronting Shang Tsung again with the same question, Shang Tsung morphs into Sub-Zero, Reptile joining the sorcerer’s side; once defeated, Shang Tsung gives a scoff, morphing into Apex and fighting Smoke once more, yet being defeated by Smoke just as beforehand.

After such, she is not mentioned any longer in the chapter.

Chapter 9: Sub-Zero

Chapter 10: Kitana

Much to everyone’s shock, Apex is seen spectating her brother’s & Quan Chi’s fight againts Kung Lao, yet leaves in silence upon Kung Lao’s victory; while still wearing her Lin Kuei attire, her unbandaged injures & bandaged ones around the entirety of her body, as well as her dull dead-like demeanor causes worried murmurs & silent gazes of pity to all around her. After her departure, she is no longer seen in the rest of the chapter, but is mentioned by Quan Chi to Noob Saibot once they find themselves at their lonesome with ‘Recall the female Lin Kuei? Steer clear of her without fail…’ without any explanation on his words, yet nonetheless Noob Saibot gives a nod of approval to his master’s words, not questioning him.

After such, she is not mentioned any longer in the chapter.

Act III

Chapter 13: Stryker

Not present nor mentioned in this chapter as she is stated to be recovering/training.

Chapter 14: Kabal

While not present at the beginning of the chapter, she is seen with Shang Tsung, amongst the others, who listen to Shao Kahn.

As dull & dead-like as she has had when seen beforehand, such a demeanor breaks once Shao Kahn kills Shang Tsung, causing her to call out for him in distress and pleading Shao Kahn to stop, only to be silenced by the Kahn. Once Shang Tsung is entirely killed, the tigress begins to grow more distraught; with a look of pure rage and hate, Apex begins to charge at Shao Kahn as she shouts graphic & brutal threats at him, only to be halted by Noob Saibot who holds her back the best he can, placing one hand over her mouth & nose and managing to put her in a sleeping state, to then gently lay her on the ground.

Upon Kabal’s intervention, Noob Saibot drives the man further away from the unconscious Apex, urging the fight further away from the tigress; once the fight is concluded with both Noob Saibot’s & Mileena’s defeat at Kabal’s hands, Apex is seen awakening after Kabal’s departure; a gaze of pure sadness & rage is all that fills her expression, to then take her leave.

Upon being known of Noob Saibot’s action toward Apex, Quan Chi grows angered by them & by his direct dismissal of his orders, plotting further to make sure Noob Saibot would not dismiss such orders again.

Later in the chapter, Raiden gains another vision of Apex, much the same one he had time ago.

After such, she is not mentioned nor seen any longer in the chapter.

Chapter 15: Cyber Sub-Zero

“Shao Kahn’s defeat did not give the tigress the closure on her family’s death as she had hoped. But it did further warn Raiden of her wrath and misery: she’s a threat to herself in this state, becoming an unstoppable threat to all the realms. Concerned, the Thunder God called upon and tasked his younger brother, Fujin, to her aid. The Wind God accepted the task, yet was alien to the tigress’s heightened senses. Discovered, Apex wounded Fujin with the intent of killing him. With no desire to wound her, Fujin simply asked for her patience in listening to his words. Upon sensing the honesty within his person, the tigress realized her mistake. Apologizing, she nursed him of his wounds. Upon hearing the Wind God’s offering companionship, the tigress understood and eventually agreed to it, slowly growing a bond with the Wind God. Growing guilty and ashamed of the one-sidedness of their companionship, Apex expressed her guilt of burdening the Wind God so while voicing her desire to a more equal-sided closeness. Fujin assured Apex of her unburdensomeness to him, agreeing to her desire while secretly sharing a similar such desire himself.”

- While unclear of the entire timeline of her relationship with Bi-Han, is it stated that the two became a couple & married before the game’s events.

- It is implied of Kuai Liang particular dislike to Apex, yet his reason for such remains unknown, even to Smoke.

- While unsure, it is speculated that the Lin Kuei Elders have never appreciated Sub-Zero’s love for Apex, yet found themselves needing to remain accepting of it upon Sub-Zero’s & their often heavy clashing on the manner, leading to declines for the clan which costed everyone much; given this, is it also speculated that Apex herself proposed to Sub-Zero for their relationship to be broken if it caused too many problems, to which Sub-Zero strongly refused, stating of their marriage occurring wether it was appreciated by the elders or less. It is speculated to be one of the only times that Sub-Zero went against the clan’s Elders.

- While twins, Apex & Shang Tsung do not share abilities; with Shang Tsung being a sorcerer & Apex being a Tiger hybrid & shapeshifter.

- Apex is the only one who often call Shang Tsung ‘Tsung’ as well as ‘brother’.

- While often appearing human, some of Apex’s behaviors & hobbies are tiger-like, such as tiger vocalization (growls, snarls, etc,) & hunting.

- As Noob Saibot, Bi-Han remembers his wife, yet finds himself unable to show it give Quan Chi’s orders to steer clear of her; once he breaks his master’s rules, it is seen that Noob Saibot is generally gentler with handling her as opposed to any other.

- Raiden had a recurring vision involving Apex; such a vision the Thunder God recalls is Apex turning into a powerful sorceress wielding unstoppable & unrivaled power, such a power that not even an Elder God can rival.

- Often described as ‘dull, dead-like demeanor’ upon Bi-Han’s death, such a behavior remains overall consistent yet also fluctuates, such as seen with Shang Tsung—who she is open and honest with—and Fujin—who she is seemingly gentler and more honest with as well; another is Shao Kahn, who she turns deadly aggressive to once he kills Shang Tsung.

⚠️ Trigger Warnings ⚠️ - Injuries, drowning, mentions of when he lost the arm but nothing in detail, vomiting.

“Thank you for bringing me back to base, Baptiste… You really didn’t have to…” Pietra says with a lightly pained voice, his eyes on Baptiste from behind the mask “No issue at all, Massimo…” The medic chuckles back, helping the Italian settle on the medical bed, which causes the man to let out a sigh of relief once he’s seated “Besides, you and I both know you’re to stubborn to ask for help” Baptiste laughs lightly with a smile as he looks at Pietra before turning around to grab his medical equipment. Pietra chuckles lightly, starting to take off the armor patches on his chest and abdominals “Only months of knowing each other and it’s like you’ve known me for a lifetime…”

Baptiste gives a smirk at the Italian’s words, settling the medical equipment on the desk, looking back at Pietra to then grab the armor patches that he took off, setting them aside to give the Italian more space “You know you need to take your mask off for this, yes?” Baptiste says in a rather quiet tone, his eyes shifting back to Pietra, who reluctantly nods his head after a few seconds of stillness “I know… just give me a second…” He replies. Baptiste knows that, despite the fact that his friend took off his mask many times around him, he still needs time to adjust to the entire idea of someone knowing his face.

With a soft whirring sound, the horned mask comes off, revealing the Italian’s face “Good, now let’s get started, yes?” Baptiste questions with a smile, extending his hand for the mask, to which Massimo hands it over hesitantly and unsurely. Baptiste grabs the mask and settles it near the armor patches, proceeding to start checking the Italian; during the battle in Toronto, the Italian was slammed rather hard against a wall, to which caused his mech to retract back, leaving him open and vulnerable. Baptiste knows the Italian is feeling the impact, but he also knows he’s too proud to say anything “Feeling any dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath?” Baptiste questions with a tinge of worry “I’m fine, feeling the same pain as every day…” Massimo answers in a somewhat serious tone, but his gentleness is finally heard “What? Where?” Baptiste asks, his worry increasing, but it dissipates once he sees Massimo grinning lightly “Ah, you almost fooled me…” Baptiste sighs with a shake of the head, a grin painting his features “Almost? You completly panicked!” Massimo laughs back.

A loud ring interrupts the conversation; it’s Massimo’s communicator on his right sleeve.

Baptiste expected Massimo to answer the communication immediately, but he turns confused once the Italian’s expression shifts to puzzleness “Cosa? Ma, that can’t be right…” Massimo says as he looks at the name on the communicator then points at his mask and gesturing Baptiste to grab it for him, to which the medic complies, giving the mask to him and observing him as he places it back on his face with another soft whirring sound. Pietra answers the communication, tapping on the screen “Pietra qui, who is this?” He questions; it’s obvious his Pietra facade is back in play…

Baptiste and Pietra’s eyebrows shoot up as they hear the sound of gunfire and panic from the communicator, a panicked voice being heard “Pietra?! We need help! T-the omnics are back!” A female’s voice is heard, panting and seemingly sobbing lightly “Where are you?” Pietra wastes no time to question with critical information as he gets up from the medical bed, his face twisting in light pain as his feet hit the ground, but nonetheless he sucks it up as usual, grabbing the armor patches he took off earlier “T-the Colosseo! W-we can’t shoot through them and they’re cutting through us like paper!” The woman answers back in the same tone of voice, letting out another sob. Pietra places the armor patches back on, checking the status of his mech as he answers “I’ll be there as quick as I can, hold out for a little more, Sergente” Pietra answers, grimacing at his mech’s status: 60% recovery “Please hurry… Less than half a team remains and-“ Before the Sergeant could finish her stance, the communication gets cut, causing both men in the room panic.

Pietra groans and flicks his wrist, the communicator closing and screen turning off “Cavolo!” He shouts lightly, finishing to check his mech then looking back up at Baptiste “I’m going” He simple states, beginning to rush out of the room, but Baptiste grabs the shorter man’s wrist and looks down at him “You’re hurt, you need to recover first. I’ll call whoever’s available to go in your place…” He states with a worries and firm tone “I don’t have time for that. For all I know the Sergeant got cut, too” Pietra brushes off the medic’s hand and start to rush out again “Don’t follow me, tell the team I’ll be back soon!” Pietra shouts out, then fully rushes out of the room,

Baptiste sighs with defeat, shaking his head; he should have persisted harder to let the Italian stay… He knows him too well to know that even if he called in whoever’s available for battle, Pietra will send them back without protests and hesitation… Pietra’s stubbornness always has worried the medic…

With a swift and fast zoom, Pietra finally arrives at the Colosseum, landing on the top windows and looking down at the scene; omnics tearing and rushing through soldiers like nothing, tearing down pieces of the majestic architecture, throwing civilians around like bags of potatoes… It makes Pietra angry.

In this moment, he doesn’t even remember what made him think he could ever depart from Italy, his Italy and leaving her so open and vulnerable. He’s doing nothing else but kicking himself.

With a swift jump, Pietra lands on one of the omics’s shoulders, shooting down at its head and dashing down at it, crushing it into the ground, decommissioning it effectively. With another dash, the Italian slams against a second omnic, punching it in the lens and shooting it through the mid-section then punching it again; wrapping the mech’s arms securely around the omnic and facing a third omnic, Pietra dashes toward said omnic and slams the two omnics against one another, sending a ball of bullets through the two ominc’s heads, decommissioning them as well.

Turning his head to his side and gasping as sees another larger omnic rushing toward him, Pietra extends his arms to shoot through it, but it speeds up and harshly runs into the Italian, flying upward and rushing down to slam him against the hard ground; Pietra shouts out in pain, his blue eyes looking at the mech’s status which already reached 85% damage taken… He can’t hold out for longer and he’s very well aware of it…

Shouting as he pushes against the omnic, Pietra places the mech’s hand on its neck and shoots, pushing to stand on his feet again and facing another omnic, implying the same strategy of slamming them against one another, and effectively doing so, but failing to realize that another omnic, the same model as the as the two he’s in the process of decommissioning, is rushing to him.

‘Where did these come from?! Why can’t I-‘ But his thoughts get cut short when another pair of omnics rush into the mix, joining their three companions into throwing and shooting the Italian around.

Pietra’s utterly lost; he’s already in pain from the earlier injury, now he’s gaining more from the sole fact that he’s unable to defeat these new models of omnics… He tries to stand up and retaliate against them all, but every time he does so another pair appear and join in, but his entire soul comes crushing down once he hears the mech’s alarm and sees it shutting down and retracting back.

The omnic’s red lenses staring down at the defeated and injured Italian, then move again once they see him move to try to and stand up, one of them rushing toward him and wrapping its arms around him, flying at a great speed through the walls of the Colosseo and slamming Pietra against said walls, the rest of the omnic’s following suit.

As they all fly up above Rome and the rest of Italy and finally reaching the ocean, Pietra feels at the verge of passing out as he’s shot from one omnic to the other; he hasn’t felt this hurt ever since he lost his arm… Yet the man keeps his blue eyes open from behind the mask, tears pricking the corners of them as he looks at the group of omnics who still toss his around as they all zip and zoom up above the ocean.

What gives him a smudge of hope is when his communicator begins to rings loudly as beforehand, but it quickly gets crushes as one omnic buries its hand in the suit and rips it off, tossing it down below into the sea, then being tossed to another omnic who quickly wraps its arms around him again and rushes toward the nearest structure, slamming Pietra against it for what sees like seventy times, to then grab him by his left arm and tossing him down toward the ocean.

The water hits Pietra much like a slap to his back, sinking down into the deep blue; he tries his best to swim up, but every movement sends pain shooting through his entire body, the armor patches making much heavier than he truly is; he can’t bear the struggle and pain anymore, involuntarily opening his mouth from under the mask as his eyes close, letting his body go and letting the water fill his lungs; he can’t help but feel as if it’s truly over for him… all the people he left behind, all the last words he said to others… they all replay in his head… especially his beloved… how he’s sorry that he’s never going to see him alive again.

But… why does he faintly notice the shadow of a person swimming toward him?

The person wraps their hand around Pietra’s wrist and struggle to pull him up, then wrap their other hand around his wrist and dash upward, beginning to swim with Pietra in their grasp; gasping for air as they both reach up above the water, the person dashes again to shore, laying Pietra down on his back and attempting to remove his mask, but find themselves unable to do so. Their hazel eyes begin to carefully scan the mask, their gaze settling on the horns; placing their right hand on the tip of the right horn and their left hand just below that, they manage to snap the horn in half, which causes the mask to unlatch off of Pietra’s face. The person quickly removes the mask and tosses it to the side, rushing to tear off the patch of armor on the Italian’s chest and tossing it as well “Come on, please be okay…” The person’s soft and worried voice breaks as their hazel eyes look down on Pietra.

Placing their hands into a certain grip with one another then starting to preform CPR on the Italian, they occasionally place their right hand flat against Pietra’s chest as a soft pink and yellow glow emits from their palm, then go back to preforming CPR; their breath catches in their throat as Pietra begins to cough, the water expelling from his lungs as air finally fills him, turning around and beginning to vomit and cough out the water that filled him, breathing deeply as his vision begins to unblur. The person sighs deeply again, placing two fingers on Pietra’s neck and checking for his pulse.

Pietra freezes when he realizes he’s not alone; turning around as quickly as he can and pointing his mechanical hand toward the other person, even if its deactivated, Pietra’s ready to put up another fight even if he’ll lose it. His blue eyes go wide as he lays his gaze on the person in front of him, completely unfazed from his action and only carrying a worried, teary-eyed gaze…

“Bua?” His hoarse voice whispers in disbelief, his hands dropping down as he stares at his former boyfriend.

Niran chokes out a sob, tears falling from his face as he moves his shaky hand to cup Pietra’s- no, Massimo’s- Massimo’s face “Oh, Max…” He simply whispers as he looks deep into his former boyfriend’s blue eyes “You’re alive…” He whispers again as chokes out another sob, shifting to get closer to Massimo and wrapping his arms around him, trying to be as gentle as possible “I thought I’d lost you for good…”

Yes, I am leaving it on a mild cliffhanger! (Insert evil laugh)

Story

A masked and cold protector, Pietra’s determination and golden heart for his people and nation were the main factors that pushed the man to let go his life of luxury and take on a life full of pain, death, disappointments, broken hearts and suffering.

The once happy and cheerful singer turns into a cold-hearted and brutal protector when the horned mask is placed on his face, trying his hardest to leave that facade with his mask but finding it extremely complicated to separate the two, especially when it comes to his night terrors and difficult consequences attached to Pietra, but he’s lucky enough to have found people who care for him, willing to get close and remind the man that he’s not alone, that he has support and that it’s more than okay to detach to take care of one’s self.

Childhood

The son of one of the most intelligent engineers and inventors in Italy, his father’s cold-heart toward his ‘stupid son’ only increased as Massimo took a major dislike to any sort of mathematical subject and love for any sort of artistic and creative subject when he was a young kid; his father’s hope was that he’d grow out of it when he became older, but it never came true. Because of this, Massimo’s father began to disregard him, emotionally abusing him to the point of making the young boy feel stupid, even though he really wasn’t; having given up on his son, Massimo’s father refused to communicate in any sort of manner with his son, forcing him to come to Vishkar with him, never telling him what happened to his mother as well as not accepting his sexuality and using it against Massimo as another means of isolation from him.

For Massimo’s entire childhood, the man remembers one thing about his mother; her screams of pain and his father’s incomprehensible insults to her, a bruise to her eye and a single letter the following morning with the simple words ‘I’m sorry, amore. Love, mamma.’ Massimo’s mother is rarely talked of as the Italian man doesn’t like to bring her up, his only memory of her being that day.

Vishkar Corporation

In his early teens at the time (early13M), Massimo was forced to follow his father to Vishkar once Silvio was offered a high-earning position, caring less to ask for his son’s opinion, as for everything else.

Quickly, Massimo hated the place… He hated the teachers, the students, how bland the building looked, how distant and uncaring everyone was, especially how much he was undermined and casted out; because of his fame and reputation, students and teachers alike rendered him an outcast rather quickly as they deemed him a snob and arrogant alongside ‘not as smart as them’, which only added to Massimo’s dislike to mathematical subjects. Safe for one student, a year older than him but in a couple of the same classes; Niran Pruksamanee (early14M - late14N).

The Thai student always had been a fan of Massimo’s music and image, taking the opportunity to meet with him when the singer organised a music club, hoping to gain some interest from his peers, but to avail, safe for Niran who was the only student who attended said club before it was permanently shut down by school staff.

Within their mid-teens (late15M - early16N), Massimo and Niran understood that they both held romantic feelings for one another, beginning to date in secret when confessing to each other; the only one who knew about their relationship was Niran’s roommate Satya Vaswani, who was quick to realise Niran’s attention was caught somewhere else when he seemed more concerned about his messages than his work, among many other things that Niran was rather careless to hide and forget them about his desk and bed. The two lover’s feelings for one another grew intensely rather quickly (mid16M - late17N), so much so that both of them agreed that Massimo could announce to his fans that he is taken, but still keep Niran identity a secret.

Meanwhile, while Massimo opened up a new chapter in his life and finished his studies before than all his peers independently and separately from Vishkar (late16M), Silvio had created a bionic arm that could transform into a huge mech, the first of its kind, creating this machine to pass down to a man which would use said machine to protect Italy as Omnic attacks were on the rise again, but Massimo managed to see that the older man, who was in his early 20’s, cared nothing about the responsibility it took and only flaunted the possession of the machine, ignoring the trainings and preparations and lying to Silvio as well as Vishkar’s higher ups; Massimo understood that the man would do nothing to change and that Italy would fall into ruins at the hands of this man.

Deciding to amputate his own left arm (early17M - late17N), much to Niran’s major distress, Massimo managed to secure the machine and began to train with Vishkar, deciding to flee Vishkar in his late teens (late17M - early18N), despite the heartbreak that it caused the couple; saying their final goodbyes and giving their last kiss, Massimo finally departed with a heavy heart and tear filled eyes, having done what he could to keep his love with him, but to no avail.

It wounded both men deeply, but it wounded Satya as well, who Massimo gave no proper goodbye to as he didn’t want to cause anymore distress to his good friend who already had her plate full with other, more important worries; he wished he’d never done that, wishing that he gave his good friend a proper, heartfelt goodbye.

Italy’s Omnic War & Overwatch (New Blood)

With the new-found identity of Pietra, Massimo fought long and hard to save Italy and its people from the omnics, losing the mechanical arm just two years into the war which led to a self-amputation as the wound was too big to let heal; as quickly as he could have, Massimo returned to Vishkar Corporations, much to the Italian Military’s warnings and denies, searching for his father in hopes of stealing another arm and fleeing again, managing in his mission rather quickly and easier than he thought, finding the perfect fit to replace his fully lost left arm alongside half of his shoulder, dismantling the arm’s tracker and alarm and fleeing back to Italy.

This theft didn’t go unnoticed by Vishkar, who were quick to send out their best forces to hunt down Pietra; quickly enough, Italy’s borders were closed to any sort of Vishkar activity or employee in order to protect Pietra to allow him to keep doing his duty without any further worries, to which they succeeded in as Vishkar quickly gave up on the search, ordering Silvio to create another one, only for the man to suffer a stroke in his sleep and pass away.

With the war over after seven years, Massimo kept up his Pietra facade to still protect Italy from any sort of other threats, specifically to recurring omnics and Talon activity, to which Italy’s people were more than grateful for, keeping up his double life for other six years, until finally letting his mask sit for longer then he wore it as he was sure Italy was rid of all omnic and Talon activity.

Just after three moths, Pietra was visited by Cassidy on his day off, who was in search of new recruits for Overwatch’s recall; after a rather intense battle and concussion, Cassidy transported Pietra with himself along his way back to Watchpoint: Gibraltar, where Pietra met one of the medics by the name of Baptiste. Much to Massimo’s displeasure, Baptiste met him without his mask and knowing his true identity, attempting to keep this happening a secret by threatening the medic, unsuccessfully. Instead of successfully pushing the medic away and keeping him at a safe distance, Baptiste managed to get the man to open up, especially once Massimo began to wear his mask less and less in their shared quarters as well as dropping his facade, being more himself, to which Baptiste majorly appreciated.

Surely enough, once Massimo had opened up and began to share his struggles with his roommate, the two men grew close rather quickly, trusting one another with their past and present worries and problems, yet always reminding themselves that their primary relationship is doctor-patient in hopes to not let themselves get too attached to one another.

To this day, their relationship is still close, with the medic throwing in the occasional flirting, both of them knowing that it’s mere teasing between close friends.

- Massimo’s name ‘Pietra’ was chosen by himself as he believed it would represent what kind of protector he wanted to be for Italy; firm, cold, strong and always there as someone to lean on when needed

- In his opening quote ‘I’d let myself burn if it meant saving them’, its unclear who he is specifically referring to

- Massimo writes his own songs and creates concepts for the music composition, passing it onto Sofia for approval; the music composition is executed by one of the top bands in Italy, which were extremely excited to work with someone as famous and talented as Massimo

- Massimo wrote music dedicated to Niran, but he never published it nor showed it to Niran, as he was too embarrassed to do so, even though he knew his boyfriend would appreciate it

- Massimo was never really aware of the true extent of his wealth ever since he became 16, when Sofia agreed to show and explain the sum of his wealth to the boy as he became mature enough to understand the true and proper concept of money; even after this occurred, Massimo’s attitude toward his fortunes never changed, always using and asking for his money when he needed to buy something for himself or for others, but Sofia would sometimes give him her own money without him knowing

- It’s never really explained how much Massimo’s wealth truly runs, but it is known that his fortunes are ‘three thousand times more than the Pruksamanee family’, which can imply that Massimo could be a billionaire, or even more than that; it is shown that the man does buy extremely expensive things for the purpose of it serving those close to him and not only himself as the man is only selfish with his money when spending it for the basic expenses someone needs to live

- Even though Niran and Massimo dated when they were young, the two truly loved and cared for each other, finally understanding it one year in their relationship; the two never stopped loving one another, despite the fact that they were separated

- In game, Pietra and Lifeweaver have some matching skins; this is seen with their matching skin ‘Anubis & Anput’

- It is a known fact that Massimo knows a vast array of languages; it is known that he knows Italian, English, Thai, Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean fluently, as well as working on leaning Russian, Haitian Creole, Dutch, German when he has his free time

Despite having so many skilled heroes on his side, Cassidy still decides to set out to find another ally, already knowing who he wants- no, who Overwatch needs...

Pietra crosses his arms as his blue eyes gaze up at the big screen, his eyebrows knitted together as he looks at the familiar figure who talks with the Base’s soldiers; just what did this man want?

But either way, Pietra is well aware what such a visit from armed people means; a new alliance, or rather the hope of a new alliance…

Sighing, Pietra gestures for a group of four soldiers to follow him; he felt lightly pissed as this was his only day off of the month, the last thing he wanted was trouble on this day “Pietra? What are your orders? Should we deal with him?” One of the soldiers nervously asked, her gaze shifting to look at the ground in front of her as her arms rest at her sides, following the taller man in front of her.

Pietra shakes his head, looking in front of him as he turns the corner, nearing the meeting place where the figures are located “No, talking will do, but keep your weapons ready… this man’s dangerous. Don’t get swayed, va bene?” He says, his voice modulated tone making the built man sounding deeper and colder than he is.

The soldier nods in agreement, gesturing for the rest of the soldiers to check their weapons “You know this person, Pietra?” She asks with curiosity and light surprise “Yes, I recognize him from a classified mission…” Pietra answers with a light nod, glancing behind him and looking down at the soldier “You worked with him?” Another soldier questions, raising his eyebrows with pure surprise “What part of ‘Classified Mission’ do you not understand?” Pietra bites back with a sharp tone in his modulated, cold voice, causing said soldier to stiffen, looking away from Pietra.

“I don’t wanna cause a stir, sir, just want to talk to Pietra, that’s all.” Cassidy says, taking his hat off, his smooth southern accented tone sounding as polite as he could “Non importa. This is a military base, not a bar. If you want to talk to Pietra, you have to follow your chain of command.” The soldier supervising the gates of the Base says, his thick italian accented tone sounding as annoyed as it possibly could “I assume you know how to do that?” He sasses, looking at Cassidy up and down with furrowed brows.

“Soldier!” Pietra shouts as he nears the meeting place, his blue eyes set on looking at the said soldier in the eyes “I’ll handle the situation from here. Go back to your post.” He says, nodding at the soldier’s previous post, his eyes fixed on the man’s own gaze; it made a shiver run down of the soldier’s spine… after all, such a cold gaze coming from Pietra would cause anyone to fall silent and obey.

Doing what he is told, Pietra stares at the soldier as he walks back to his post, then turns his gaze to Cassidy, looking up at the cowboy, his hands in his pockets, nodding at Cassidy, waiting for him to speak; Pietra knew what Cassidy wanted to say, and he was already ready to reject him.

“Though you worked alone, sir?” Cassidy chuckles as he places his hat back on his head, his usual smirk on his face. Pietra blinks in surprise, not expecting such friendliness “I do, I just reside here for professional purposes…” He simply replies “Ascolta, I know why you’re here, signore, and I’m not sorry when I tell you that I’m not even in the least bit of interested…” Pietra continues, shaking his head “But you came from far away, so in order for this trip of yours to not be wasted, I suggest taking a stroll around here…” He says, sighing at the end as he raises his right arm, the holographic screen on his sleeve showing a multitude of tourist places around Rome “You’re welcomed to stay in Rome as long you want…” He says, sending the files to Cassidy, then flicking his wrist to turn off the holographic screen. Giving a nod to Cassidy, Pietra turns to leave “I just came to talk business, we can do that civilly, I hope?” Cassidy speaks up, which causes Pietra to stop in his tracks and look at the cowboy from over his shoulder “Ho detto il mio… leave, please.” Pietra says, his blue eyes staring into Cassidy’s brown eyes.

Cassidy takes a step forward, causing the soldiers to place their hands on their guns strapped to their hips “You’re not even the slightly bit curious in what I have to say?” Cassidy says, raising his hands and looking at Pietra. Pietra grunts, looking forward again “No, because I’ve heard the speech over and over again” The italian responds, beginning to get even more pissed, but his thoughts are interrupted by the Base’s main alarm ringing loudly “Intruso, Intruso! La sicurezza della base è violata!” the speaker’s robotic voice announces.

Pietra’s blue eyes widen in alert, looking at the small holographic screens that began to appear around the area “D’you my help, Pietra?” Cassidy offers, grabbing his gun and cocking it as his brow eyes shift between the Italian man and the gun “No, for all I could know you’re part of this…” Pietra answers harshly as his eyes scan the three figures entering the Base’s arsenal through the broken wall ‘Omnics? Why are they in the arsenal?’ Pietra thinks with curiosity, his mechanical hand’s palm now shining with a black light “Think that, maybe, they plan on stealing weapons?” Cassidy hypothesizes as he takes a step closer to Pietra, his loaded and cocked gun in his hand as he looks up at the screen “Or maybe activate them.” The masked Italian concludes, turning to look at the soldiers behind him “Lock the Base down! Nobody walks in or out! Chiaro?!” He shouts the command at the female soldier in front before he runs off toward the arsenal, his mechanical hand in front of him as the black sections of the arm begin to light up, an ever-so-soft whirring sound coming from Pietra’s palm.

Pietra’s blue eyes scanned the entrance of the arsenal, a quiet ‘tsk’ coming from his lips ‘My mech isn’t going to fit…’ He thinks with annoyance; he knows that this predicament means that he’s forced to fight these omnics without his mech, but rather head-on, and while it isn’t a big problem for him, it still slows him down and makes the process much more difficult ‘You’ve done this before, Max! You’ve fought omnics twice your size without your mech and you won…’ He encourages himself, quietly opening the door and stalking in the shadows of the arsenal as his blue eyes stare out the omnics who tamper with the various dangerous and lethal weapons ‘They’re not as big as the ones back then, but they’re still bigger than I am…’ He ponders, his eyebrows furrowing at the disadvantage he holds.

One of the omnic stops working on the weapons in front of it and snaps its head to look behind, its camera zooming in and out at the shade behind it; Pietra freezes, closing his mechanical hand into a fist which causes the whirring and lights to cease, his heart beating hard against his chest…

Cocking its weapon, the omnic points it toward the shade, its camera turned red as a loud sound played from the omnic, ready to shoot its weapon toward the shade its looking at; Pietra gasps softly and rolls away with a quiet grunt, his blue eyes closing as the omnic shoots at the spot ‘How did it see me?!’ The Italian ponders with panic, opening his mechanical hand and pointing it toward the, now, aggressive omnic, hitting the omnic’s camera which cause it to stumble backward with a loud whirring.

The other two omnics turn their heads toward Pietra, their cameras turning red as they raise their weapons toward the Italian, shooting the same red beam of the other omnic. Pietra shoots at the barrels of the other two omnics, throwing a punch at the camera of the omnic that spotted him, then gripping its head and ripping it off with a loud and powerful grunt, using it to smash the dismantled omnic’s gun, effectively rendering the omnic decommissioned.

Tossing the dismantled and smashed omnic’s head aside, Pietra turns to look at the other two omnics, his blue eyes shifting to look at one of the omnics, who seems to be connecting themselves to the arsenal’s control system ‘I have to stop it! If it transfers its system into the arsenal’s control system, who knows what this might do!’

Running toward said omnic with his mechanical arm lightly extended in front of him, the light whirring sound from Pietra’s hand is heard again as his palm opens, but he gasps lightly as the second omnic lunges to him and throws him againts the wall, sending the italian tumbling in the bricks with a soft sound of pain escaping his lips.

Growling in annoyance, Pietra shoots at the omnic, but the omnic dodges the projectiles swiftly, charging at Pietra again and slamming him further in the wall. Pietra grunts once more and roughly places his mechanical hand on the omnic hip, shooting and pushing the omnic down with all the force his injured body could muster, his blue eyes staring down the omnic with rage.

With a couple of seconds of struggling, the omnic finally shuts down as Pietra rips its bust off, kicking the dismantled legs to the third omnic, which causes said omnic to stumble lightly, turning his head to face Pietra.

The Italian stands up with a growl, his blue eyes staring daggers into the third omnic as he tosses the dismantled second omnic to the side “You want to end up like your friends?” Pietra growls at the omnic as he re-loads his projectiles. The omnic wips it head back to the arsenal’s control system; 60% reached, but the omnic knew it has little time to complete the transfer, which causes it to place its other hand on the control system, doubling the speed of completion.

Pietra begins to run toward the omnic, but he halts his footsteps as he feels a metal hand grasping his ankle; raising a brow and looking down, his blue eyes widen lightly as he sees the second omnic’s hand grasping him, pulling him down on the ground with a distorted sound of seemingly anger coming out of it. Pietra stumbles backward, pointing his mechanical hand to the omnic’s head, but the omnic places its other hand on Pietra’s hand, slowly crushing his hand in an attempt to disarm the Italian; the omnic’s head is so close to Pietra’s, its camera red and buzzing.

Pietra gasps and closes his eyes as a bullet flies into the side of the omnic’s head, turning his head to the side as the omnic crashes down, effectively decommissioned and sparking. Opening his eyes and kicking the omnic off of him, Pietra looks up as he hears a chuckle “You’re welcome, Pietra…” Cassidy’s southern accent is heard as he places his gun in the holster, walking toward the Italian man as his brown eyes observe him, extending his hand to him “I had it…” Pietra grumbles, standing up on his own, refusing Cassidy’s helping hand.

Cassidy chuckles again, crossing his arms as he shakes his head “Of course you did…” He says as he keeps looking at Pietra “Leave, you’ll get in my way…” Pietra retorts, pushing Cassidy back, then turning to face the third omnic; 85%… Pietra needed to hurry…

“I ain’t going nowhere, Pietra…” Cassidy bites back, grabbing his gun again and facing the omnic as well “If you want to prove to me that you’re a good guy, stai perdendo tempo!” Pietra raises his voice at the southerner, which only causes Cassidy to chuckle again. Pietra growls in annoyance, side-eyeing Cassidy with a frown under his mask “You get in my way, I won’t hesitate to decommission you, got it?” Pietra warns the southerner with venom in his tone “Don’t you worry ‘bout that, I’m a team player…” Cassidy laughs lightly, shooting a bullet at the omnic’s shoulder, causing the bullet to bounce off, making a small dent. Pietra shoots at the other shoulder, which causes the omnic’s arm to fall “The hell are those bullets made of?” Cassidy questions with confusion “The better question is what are your bullets made of that you can’t tear through them, Cowboy!” Pietra raises his voice mid-sentence as he rushes to the omnic, shooting at the other arm, jumping and locking the omnic’s head between his thighs and covering the omnic’s camera, which causes the omnic to disconnect its hands from the control system, but Cassidy’s eyes widen with alarm as his brown eyes look at the arsenal “Pietra!” He shouts, shooting bullets to the omnic’s legs, but groans with annoyance as the bullets don’t even dent the metal “I’m in the middle of something!” The italian shouts back, shooting into the omnic’s camera and tossing it to the wall, hopping off of it with a grunt, his mechanical palm whirring.

Pietra raises a brow as the omnic zooms away, taking off into the sky “Ma che-“ Pietra’s sentence of confusion is cut short when Cassidy rushes to him and grabs him by the wrist “We gotta get a move on, this place’s gonna blow!” He shouts with alarm. Pietra looks at the control system: 100%…

Pietra’s eyes widen with alarm and fear; quickly brushing off Cassidy’s hand from his wrist as the two step outside, raising his mechanical arm to the sky and activating his mech. Cassidy backs away, holding onto his hat as he looks up at Pietra, who now stands inside the mech at a much taller height than him “Hold on tight!” Pietra shouts, grabbing Cassidy and holding the southerner close to him and wrapping the huge mechanical arms around the man, protecting and shielding him.

After what seems like hours of waiting, the arsenal blows up, sending the two men flying to the other side of two traffic-ridden streets, at least 30 meters, into the blue sky and crashing into hard ground.

With a groan, Cassidy opens his eyes, pushing the mech’s hands off of him and slowly standing up, rolling off of Pietra, placing his hat back on “I ain’t paying for that ride again…” The cowboy jokes with a chuckle as he dusts himself off “Gotta admit, the safety was top-notch, I ain’t got even a scratch!” He continues, this time taking his hat off and fixing his hair, but he raises a brow when he hears nothing from the Italian “Pietra?” He calls out with confusion, looking over his shoulder at him.

Cassidy’s brown eyes show fear and alarm; Pietra… he��s not moving… “Pietra!” He raises his voice with alarm, rushing toward the meched-up Italian, tapping on the mech’s thick glass in hopes of waking him up “Hey! You hear me?!” Cassidy shouts with worry as for all he could know, Pietra could be injured, or worse. Delivering a bang to the thick glass, Cassidy’s brown eyes scan the huge mech; what could he to help? He has no clue on how to operate this suit! He can’t just leave him here…

With a low and pained groan, Pietra’s blue eyes slowly open, looking around the unfamiliar room ‘Wh… Where am I?’ The Italian man wonders as the exhaustion and mild pain begins to sit in ‘Was I…?’ He thinks once more, the pain and exhaustion quickly replaced with alarm, shooting up from his lying position and propping himself up with his hands, scanning the room with, now, wide blue eyes “Hey, easy there!” A rather friendly and chill unfamiliar voice interjects, the man turns to Pietra and looks down at the Italian with a warm smile “You took quite a hit, you know! You shouldn’t move so much.” The man speaks again, walking to the Italian as he holds a glass of water and a tablet of pills.

Pietra looks up at the man, who’s seemingly a medic, his blue eyes showing nothing but coldness and hostility toward the unfamiliar man “I didn’t expect my kidnapper to be so friendly with me…” Pietra says, his tone softer and gentler because of the missing mask around his face, yet still clearly cold and hostile. With a chuckle, the medic shakes his head and places the items on the nearby table “Kidnapper? Me? Now that’s funny!” The medic answers, pulling up a stool with wheels and placing it near Pietra’s bed, sitting down and looking at the Italian, his friendly smile not fading “I guess you’d prefer ‘torturer’, doc?” Pietra retorts, sarcasm laced in his tone as he says the last word, shifting to sit up and staring at the medic with sharp eyes. The medic sighs, shaking his head again and grabbing a clipboard from the same desk “I’m not a bad guy, I swear…” He says as he looks down at the clipboard, scanning the pages “You’re in Watchpoint: Gibraltar’s medical wing and I’m your medic, Baptiste” Baptiste says, not taking his eyes off of the clipboard as he flips through the pages.

With a sigh, Pietra crosses his legs under the bedsheets, looking around the room as his eyes set on his black armor patches which sit in a metal box “Thanks for the help, dottore, but I’ll be taking my leave.” Pietra says, taking the covers off and swinging his legs to the edge of the medical bed, his long black hair draping his figure as the ends of his hair rest of his lap and bed “I’ll send you the pay when I get back to Italy, grazie…” He continues, reaching over for the glass of water and the tablet of pills, taking two and gulping them down alongside the water “I’m sorry, but you’re not cleared yet, Caputo…” Baptiste retorts with a firm tone, setting down the clipboard and placing his right ankle over his left knee, looking at Pietra with a more stern expression.

With sharp eyes and a cold tone, Pietra scoffs, leaning over and looking at the medic in the eyes “You tell anyone you saw my face, I will hunt you down and do worse than kill you, capito?” Pietra threatens Baptiste; yet, the medic seems unfazed, merely giving Pietra the same cold expression, leaning over lightly “That doesn’t work with me…” The Haitian retorts, his tone deep and serious.

Pietra merely chuckles lightly, eyeing the medic up and down with intrigue, but before he can say anything, Baptiste speaks up again “You and I are going to be partners from now on, and I have no doubt we’ll have fun…” He says, leaning away from the Italian, his friendly smile lightly returning, his tone softening. Pietra leans away as well, looking to the side with the same serious expression and sharp eyes ‘Partners?’ The Italian ponders ‘Me and a guy I’ve never met until today, working side-by-side?’ He ponders once more, his gaze shifting to his mechanical arm…

Massimo pants and groans, struggling to stand up as his left arm pounds with excruciating pain, his blue eyes filled with tears as the heavy rain falls on his injured body. Groaning once more, Massimo gives up on trying to stand up, crashing down on the ground on his back as he clutches his bleeding left arm ‘I-I can’t… I can’t leave it bleed…’ He ponders with a frown as tears fall to his face ‘It’s already dead… I just need… I just need to…’ His eyes shift to a sharp piece of metal not too far from him, shakily extending his right arm to it, grabbing it with much struggle, looking up at it as he holds it. Giving a big shaky sigh, Massimo places the sharp metal on his left shoulder, closing his eyes. Screams rip through his throat; Massimo is only thankful that he’s alone. Nobody can see him like this… so weak, so pathetic…

Closing his eyes with a sharp inhale, Pietra’s body tenses as the memory of that horrible night fill his mind, his face turned toward the bed with a light frown; Baptiste merely gives Pietra a pat on his knee, looking at him with understanding “Come on, your stuff’s already in our room…” The Haitian says, standing up “‘Our room’? What, we’ll be sharing a room?” Pietra questions with light annoyance, crossing his arms and looking up at the medic “It’s either that, or the couch in the common room, Pietra…” Baptiste chuckles lightly, nodding at the exit to the room with a light smile. Pietra scoffs with furrowed brows, then chuckles with a light smile after a few seconds “I get my own bedroom, I hope.” The Italian questions, looking at the medic up and down with another chuckle “Yes, well… a shame, isn’t it?” Baptiste jokes with a wink, which causes the Italian raise his eyebrows with a questioning gaze.

Cassidy chuckles lightly as he looks at the two men conversing, his cigar between his lips as he crosses his arms “Those two are gonna help each other a whole lot, you know…” He chuckles, side-eyeing Pharah with a light smile “If you say so, Cole… I’m just glad he’s on our side.” She says, crossing her arms as well as she looks at Pietra, whose back is turned toward the door as he stands up from the medical table, grabbing his mask and placing it on.

Baptiste chuckles lightly, wrapping his arm around Pietra’s shoulder and nudging him lightly, looking down at the shorter Italian “Need help settling in, roomie?” The Haitian questions as the two begins to walk out of the room “I’ll cut your tongue off if you call me that again…” Pietra growls lightly, looking away from the medic and crossing his arms “You are not a people-person, are you?” Baptiste chuckles again, which only causes Pietra to mumble “Shut up…” but his gaze softens significantly as he looks at Cassidy as the pair passes him, who shoots him a wave with a smile ‘Maybe… Overwatch won’t be the worst idea for now…’

‘I wasn’t as smart as my father, but that didn’t mean that I was nothing…

With posters of my image around the world, radios and apps filled with my voice… any father would be proud of their son for becoming so famous, so adored, at such a young age…

But my father? Of course not…’

“Papà, I don’t approve of this…” The Italian teen says with worry in his tone, crossing his arms as his blue eyes gaze at his overworked father

“Since when have I ever asked for your opinion, Massimo?” The father says, slamming his hand against the lab counter, causing Massimo to flinch lightly.

Swallowing, the young Italian takes a hesitant step toward his father “That arm, that mech… it’s a weapon that needs somebody with determination as it’s owner… not somebody-“

“Like you.” The father cuts Massimo off, his own black eyes showing nothing but coldness.

Massimo freezes, his black eyes widening with sadness and shock, his tone faltering “L-like me? I-I built my music career from nothing but-“

“But your own laziness to do nothing but sit in a chair and screech that annoying voice of yours!”

The cold eyes of his own father, the harsh and untrue words coming from that cold and vile man sent Massimo to tears.

The teen scoffs shakily, trying to search for words to defend himself, but his father’s cold and uncaring eyes give him more reason to run off in tears.

‘My father’s new invention made a hit in the engineering world, so much so that Vishkar Corporations contacted him, telling him that they saved a spot in the higher-ups for my father.

Being a teen at the time I was forced to follow him, even if I cared nothing for Vishkar and their views… I just kept making my music, kept my image the same, kept my identity… even if I became an outcast…

Just like him… only he made everything better…’

“If word got out, our families would leave us, Max…” The young Thai inventor says, his tone worried yet loving, his white hair draping over his shoulders as he wraps his arms around the singer, burying his face in his stomach.

Massimo chuckles softly, moving one hand to his partner’s hair and gently brushing it in his fingers, his tone calm and loving, despite the painful words “When has anyone truly been here for us, Bua?”

Niran peaks up at Massimo, a light frown on his lips from the truth of those words.

Sighing, the Thai inventor shifts to sit on the Italian singer’s lap, wrapping his arms around Massimo’s neck and leaning his forehead against his, his hazel eyes looking into Massimo’s blue eyes with the same sad glint “I’m here for you… don’t forget that, Max…” Niran says, his sincere tone above a whisper.

Massimo chuckles lightly, placing his hand on Niran’s cheek with a light smile, his thumb caressing his soft skin “I couldn’t be more grateful for that, amore mio…”

‘I knew that the owner of my father’s invention was going to be no less of a brainless puppet and much to my disappointment, I was right.

The guy had no care for the responsibility that came with the mech, all he cared about was how many people fawned over him, all the fame he got just because “He was so brave to step up”.

I knew that, when the time came, he would run off like the coward he is.

I knew Italy wouldn't be safe with him.

I knew the people would all die with him as our ‘protector’.

I knew I had to make a change to this, but I also knew my cold father wouldn't listen to me.

So, I did something… frankly, something stupid, but it was the only solution…

I could feel the blood stopping. I could feel the coldness settling in.

I could feel my arm dying.’

Massimo’s painful scream cuts Niran out of his casual stroll in the hallways, dropping his device to the floor and whipping his head toward the lab doors with wide worried eyes “Max?!” He shouts, his heart beating in his throat as he runs towards the lab’s opened doors.

His stomach dropped at the sight; Massimo crouched down, holding his left forearm now turned blue, tears in his eyes with a pained frown.

“What happened?!” Niran raises his worried voice unintentionally, rushing toward his lover and crouching down beside him, looking down at his blue forearm with the same wide eyes “I’m sorry! It’s the only way!” Massimo’s pained and shaky words make Niran’s breath get caught in his throat, yet his movements didn’t falter, albeit a bit shaky.

Reaching his right hand to the nearby cabinet, Niran opens it, grabbing a syringe and taking its cap off, ready to inject it into Massimo’s arm; he hoped it wasn’t too late to save his beloved’s forearm.

Massimo’s right hand wraps around Niran’s wrist, shakily pushing the antidote away

“I can save the arm! Just-“ Niran says with a shaky tone, his glazed eyes confused amongst the sadness, looking at Massimo.

“No! Let it die! Please!” Massimo screams, tears pouring down his blue eyes.

Niran froze; what was he to do now? He knows his lover too well to know there’s no debating, too well to know he can’t force him.

Too well to know he won’t listen.

‘I knew my plan would work.

My father is too much of a proud man to let me live without my left forearm. I knew that he wouldn't hesitate to give me his invention, despite me being “lazy and stupid”.

That’s exactly what he did; with no hesitation he gave the mech to me and kicked the guy to the curb.

I knew my father would treat me the same way he always did, and I was sick of him and his ways.

He was no dad… he was barely a father.

So, I left…

I left my father, I left Vishkar and its fake, holographic life; I never felt better.

But, I had to leave behind what I loved as well; no more live shows, no more meet-ups with fans, no more performances, no more music…

And my love… who parted ways with me…

How I miss him…’

“I-I can’t lose you…” Niran’s breaking voice is above a whisper, a frown on his tear stained face; a frown that looks so misplaced, a frown that Massimo hates to see.

Placing a gentle and loving kiss on Niran’s lips, Massimo sighs shakily as he pulls away, his blue eyes glazed as they peer at him “I can’t lose you either…”

“Then let me come with you. I’ll help you defend Italy… just please, I can’t say goodbye…” Niran responds, leaning his forehead against Massimo’s, his teary hazel eyes glued to Massimo’s glazed blue eyes “No, you know you can't…” The Italian man says with sorrow, his tone shaky as he speaks “With your biolight… Arcology needs you. The world needs it… and you with it…” He continues, his glazed eyes now pouring down the tears he so hard tried to hold back.

Niran swallows the lump in his throat, sniffling “Just like Italy needs Pietra…” He says in the same hushed, broken manner.

The two lovers keep their gazes into eachother’s teary eyes; they both knew this was their goodbye.

“In another life, amore mio…” Massimo says, breaking away from Niran with a forced smile.

Reaching his mechanical hand to his white horned mask with blacked out eyes, Massimo places the mask on his face, stealing one final glance to his adored one before activating his mech by raising his mechanical arm to the sky.

Niran stood there, looking at his beloved with a broken heart as he zoomed away in his mech; this wasn’t how things were supposed to go…

‘With my newfound weapon, mask and name I traveled back to Italy with the determination to fight for her.

The war was difficult, but I knew I made the right choice, because in the end, the smiles of my people are what warms my heart, bringing an unseeable smile on my face.

But I also know that despite Italy being safe now, the world still needs help…

With a weapon like mine, it would be a waste to go back to being Massimo forever…

But sometimes I can’t help but wonder what could have been… of us.

What if we would have never parted ways, 13 years ago?

But dwelling on what could have been only brings tears to my eyes; tears that I know that he would hate to see…
