Voici la couverture de notre premier livre cartonnier-numérique interactif, un roman où le lecteur choisit son parcours à l'aide de couleurs, de boutons et d'hyperliens, certains plus cachés que d'autres. Eastern Eggs et Red Herrings pullulent dans Raya : instrucciones de (v)(d)uelo, de Rojo Córdova, un roman de notre collection Emergencias qui donnera à ceux qui le liront l'envie d'en savoir plus sur la vie et l'œuvre de Javier Raya.

Ce livre sera présenté le 21 octobre, dans le cadre d'une performance scénique unique sous la forme d'un monologue dramatique de son auteur au El 77 Centro Cultural Autogestivo (Abraham González 77, Col. Juárez, Mexico).

Here is the cover of our first interactive digital cardboard book, a novel where the reader chooses his course through colors, buttons and hyperlinks, some more hidden than others. Eastern eggs and red herrings swarm in Raya: instrucciones de (v)(d)uelo, by Rojo Córdova, a novel from our Emergencias collection that will leave readers wanting to know more about the life and works of Javier Raya.

The presentation of this book will take place on October 21, as part of a unique stage presentation in the form of a dramatic monologue by its author at El 77 Centro Cultural Autogestivo (Abraham González 77, Col. Juárez, Mexico City).

What do cardborad books sound like? / Quel est le son des livres cartionniers ?

Paper Piece, a performance by Benjamin Patterson Arrangements by Stuart Jackson Performed at The Ausgang Plaza, Montreal QC March 22nd, 2023 After having first performed a version of Benjamin Patterson’s “Paper Piece” by invitation of Stuart Jackson and Amanda Gutiérrez at SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art in Montreal, on April 17th, 2021, Kodama Cartonera members participated in another rendition of this Fluxus performance with special arrangements by Jackson, as a part of the repertoire for his solo show "Aural Readymades," including pieces by Patterson, Carola Bauckholt, Brian Ferneyhough, Iannis Xenakis, and Rebecca Saunders. Some of the questions we wanted to answer this time through making and performing was regarding the cardboard device’s sonority. How many sounds can a cardboard book produce? What kind of sounds? Kodama editors Alejandra Jiménez and Aurelio Meza recently participated in a rendition of Fluxus performance “Paper Piece” by Benjamin Patterson (1960), playing (with) the sounds of cardboard and paper as part of their explorations into the performatic aspect of cartonera workshops.

Benjamin Patterson’s “Paper Piece” (1960) is a text-based score that offers instructions for a group of five performers to explore the acoustic possibilities intrinsic in a multitude of paper textures. “Paper Piece” marks the first radical deviation that Patterson made from his classical and contemporary music sensibilities which spurred a period of intense creative activity. Though the score provides precise instructions, the piece began to take on a life of its own at Fluxus concerts, with spontaneous audience participation turning the piece into a chaotic happening. Our realization of the piece will take a step in the opposite direction, exploring more sparse and subtle possibilities with a version for three performers. As part of the “Paper Noise” exhibition, the live performance aims to explore the materiality of the paper, as a vehicle of collaboration and open interpretation. The piece will reuse the paper materials in the preparation of street collages and paper cut-out animations produced in previous weeks at Gallerie SBC (Montreal, Canada). For artist-in-residence Amanda Gutiérrez, it was important to include the work of the only Black composer in the Fluxus movement, Ben Patterson, who composed collaborative cutting-edge and political happenings in avant-garde music throughout his career as an artist and composer for more than four decades.

Les éditeurs de Kodama Alejandra Jiménez et Aurelio Meza ont récemment participé à une interprétation de la performance Fluxus "Paper Piece" de Benjamin Patterson (1960), en jouant (avec) les sons du carton et du papier dans le cadre de leurs explorations de l'aspect performatif des ateliers de cartonera.

"Paper Piece" (1960) de Benjamin Patterson est une partition textuelle qui donne des instructions à un groupe de cinq interprètes pour explorer les possibilités acoustiques intrinsèques à une multitude de textures de papier. "Paper Piece" marque le premier écart radical de Patterson par rapport à ses sensibilités musicales classiques et contemporaines, ce qui a donné lieu à une période d'intense activité créatrice. Bien que la partition fournisse des instructions précises, la pièce a commencé à prendre une vie propre lors des concerts Fluxus, la participation spontanée du public transformant la pièce en un événement chaotique. Notre réalisation de la pièce ira dans la direction opposée, explorant des possibilités plus éparses et subtiles avec une version pour trois interprètes. Dans le cadre de l'exposition "Paper Noise", la performance en direct vise à explorer la matérialité du papier, en tant que véhicule de collaboration et d'interprétation ouverte. La pièce réutilisera les matériaux en papier dans la préparation des collages de rue et des animations en papier découpé produits au cours des semaines précédentes à la Gallerie SBC (Montréal, Canada). Pour l'artiste en résidence Amanda Gutiérrez, il était important d'inclure le travail du seul compositeur noir du mouvement Fluxus, Ben Patterson, qui a composé des happenings collaboratifs avant-gardistes et politiques dans la musique d'avant-garde tout au long de sa carrière d'artiste et de compositeur pendant plus de quatre décennies.
