I dunno, Rayla is some lameo cop/Fed/Met agent.

Why?

Some Runaan reason.

Anyway, she's tasked with looking into suspected forged artworks. They're all so good it seems highly unlikely, but some rich guy has the ear of her boss, so she has to get on it.

The guy who's disrupting the art seems waaaay too dumb to actually be doing the paintings (Smort Longpocket? Really?), but she follows him to a dingy apartment where a scruffy-haired guy is living and working and painting, and he looks much more likely to fit the bill.

It all seems way too far fetched though, (there’s some ridiculously sweet kid with a pet toad(?) living with them. How’s he supposed to fit into all this?), so she decides to do a bit of undercover work... get to know the artist guy and see if he really could be some kind of diabolical international art forger.

He seems way too dorky and sincere, though. And sweet and kind. Kinda funny in a dumb way. Cute not that that matters.

And he is an amazing artist in his own right. He wouldn't need to forge art, would he?

And, yeah, okay, maaaaaybe, she doesn't want him to be the art forger because it's not like she can let him go and maybe she’s sort of started to like like him… shit starts to hit the fan.

A deal with Finnegrin (a dude who has clearly not got his wealth though legal means) goes wrong. “Smort” gets taken captive and Callum (art guy) is freaking out and feeling responsible.

Callum’s clearly going to get himself killed trying to do the right thing and then the kid is going to be left alone and she’s going to have nothing to show for her months of work on this case.

That all explains everything from here on out, right?

It’s not like she can let the big lug “Smort” get hurt, so it only makes sense to suggest they pull a bigger con… Go all out to convince Finnegrin of the legitimacy of the art.

And she’s just doing that to save Smort’s life obviously. Once he’s free, she’s taking them all in and they’re going to have to pay for their crimes.
