After half a summer spent growing closer and closer with Callum, Rayla knows she has to keep him safe in the aftermath of their misadventure at the Moon Nexus—and that means she has to go. Little does she realize, though, that more than just a piece of his heart is coming with her.

She crosses the border the next night, carefully picking her way across the Moonstone Path, its stones only barely lit by the silver crescent in the sky. The canyon is different at night: cold and blue and…lonely, without Callum there, smiling at her side. This is it, Callum! Xadia! Though…lonely is better than a gigantic, murderous blind dragon to keep her company, at least.  By now, Callum’s scent has certainly faded, of course, from the cloak he’d bought her and the things she’d taken with her and the skin that he’d…touched. Maybe Sol Regem would’ve let her pass anyway, then…but probably not, she decides.  Probably, it’d be on sight if Sol Regem got even a whiff that she was passing through again, whether or not Callum had left any trace on her…so Rayla picks up the pace, trying to steer her thoughts away from Callum’s skin, Callum’s smell, Callum’s smile, but— He’s smart, and kind, and brave, and he’s…my friend. My best friend. She can’t.
