again, first-class hideyoshi’s habit of TUNING out surfaces, SILENCING haise & anybody else who may protest. weapon in hand, he joins the battle a little late, ( having been DISTRACTED by the music blaring from his comrade’s headphones. really, how is he not deaf ?? ) & he jumps in without hesitation.

he’d never admit to it, but haise’s adoration of DESTRUCTION RESIDES deep, & something - something about hideyoshi’s GRACEFUL movement encourages this; it’s the attitude he emits: cockiness, or is it confidence ?? both of which haise has none, not in situations like this. his shoulder is BRUTE STRENGTH & that is why he must protect tactical & mindful fighters, like this music-loving fool, at all costs.

every other swing is BURDENED by his WORRY over the other, as grey eyes are CONSTANTLY SEARCHING, ( he’s FAST; no wonder he’s rated first class with his… unconventional methods. )

& it’s while he has his blade LODGED in the stomach of a lowly ENEMY that he notices them, a rather skilful OPPONENT, tailing his associate with a HUNGRY look in their eye, & even worse, they’re using his temporary deafness to their advantage. ❝hideyoshi !!❞ he can’t call above the song as a ghoul takes to POUNCING on haise & stopping his any attempt to rescue the bleached young man. ❝hideyoshi first-class !!❞

         handle down in the ground, flip as the time signature changes, and hide had spun around once more, little more than a fast blur of acrobatic expertise.  the music continues to blast along in his headphones, and hide’s blade keeps beat, even as the song makes the change over.

          but he’s human.  no matter how good hideyoshi is, no matter that his family has advanced senses--he’s tuned out the world, and hideyoshi is still a squishy pile of fleshy meat.  the other ghoul comes up from behind, and hide stops still as he feels the pain of a kagune push right through his other arm.  all training falls from his mind and he drops his quinque from a mix of shock, pain, and the fact some nerves are then cut off.

          everything stills and slows for him, and then, as if the ghoul is mocking him, to the beat of the music, hide is thrown to the side--a limp rag doll, his arm bleeding.  he tries to get it to move, his quinque’s out of reach, and there’s a ghoul coming at him.  is this it?  this the end of washuu hideyoshi?

          he lets out a few panicked sounds, trying to make a move back for the quinque, but the ghoul grabs him by his prosthetic arm and tugs at it, causing hide to scream as it’s popped out incorrectly and thrown to the side.  that was a kind of pain he wasn’t used to, and without a quinque, hide’s useless.

Things Hide actually does that do not fit the image of perfect happy selfless sunshine boy, and show that he’s a complex character:

1. He’s jealous of Anteiku. Not surprising, perfectly natural response to seeing your best friend seemingly drifting away from you.

2. The smiling persona is used as a disguise to hide his thoughts or feelings on multiple occasions (see: that time with Nishiki, for example).

3. He doesn’t tell Kaneki he knows Kaneki is a ghoul – even though he’s known since volume one and could have saved Kaneki a lot of worries and fear. Because yes, he accepted Kaneki completely, but Kaneki never knew that until Hide showed up suddenly while Kaneki was bleeding to death in a sewer.

4. Where did he get a dead ghoul’s clothes?

5. He is obviously capable of manipulating situations and people well, and we’ve seen him lie numerous times in the manga as well as the light novels, and he doesn’t seem too concerned with doing morally dubious things as long as he thinks it’s worth it – like, if it will help him find or help Kaneki.

Add more things. I wanna have an actual discussion about Hide as a character that isn’t based on him being all sunshine, because he’s not. And that’s what makes him a great character.

hide week day 07 - free day ↳ hide + tv tropes

every day, every moment spent away from hide while he healed was exhausting, torture. that’s why he has to make up for it, by spending as much time as possible by his side, clinging to patience & hope for dear life.

hide had chosen an awkward moment to wake up, ( surprise, surprise. hide was always like that, always with perfect timing, ) as kaneki had left the room to rid his mind of doubt & frustration. how many days has it been now ?? how many weeks ?? of kaneki’s accord, stupidity, recklessness… hide is - he’s hanging by a spider’s thread, & that thought wells tears in grey eyes. ( …it’s so painful. )

ccg hospital doors open swiftly as he dwindles back into the room, sniffling & close to breaking point. it isn’t until he sits down that he can make out brown eyes in his blurred vision, brown eyes belonging to somebody who is breathing & conscious & AWAKE. hide is awake. hide is…

❝hide !!❞ voice a register or two above an excited whisper, he has to test that his eyes aren’t deceiving him; he’s back on his feet, then his knees at the edge of the bed, creaking the springs as he leans over his clearly awake friend. ❝you’re - okay. thank goodness. thank goodness !!❞ he won’t cry again. no, he definitely… fuck, he can’t control it now, settling back & weeping into his palms. for so long, he has watched this vibrant figure reduce to this weak, bedridden, crippled & dull being. hide hasn’t been BRIGHT, he hasn’t been hide is so long that kaneki was beginning to give up, but… !! here he is, AWAKE, as vivid as ever.

❝hide - i’m sorry. i’m so sorry, hide.❞ he spouts his name as if it’ll keep him around for longer, as if it’ll encourage him to heal faster, ❝hide. hide, are you okay ?? how are you feeling, hide ??❞

         hide softly finds himself groaning from behind the tube in his throat.  he doesn’t process the words, not at first; it’s slow coming to him, no matter how much he tries to make sense of them, at first.  so he just watches kaneki, aware of the sudden pressure and weight on the bed as it creaks with kaneki on it.

         “he...man...ta?”  what?  the utari word comes first; it’s all hide can do to PROCESS a preferred language at first, and even then, the sounds are muffled with the obstruction in his way.  but his eyes grow as alert as they can be; hide slowly starts focusing on kaneki, following him around the room as his hand twitched.

          “ka....kane....ki?”  he gets out next, the sound still muffled as hide whimpers, trying to move and failing.  he can’t get anything to move, no matter how much effort he puts in, and it’s making hide far too upset.  he settles for a pathetic look instead, as it’s all the effort he can give, and instead, hide finds the energy from speaking two words to be more than he should have given, and his head weakly lays on the side, although his eyes remain locked onto kaneki, the man laying down clearly alert, albeit rather confused to what was going on.

          he doesn’t give anymore words after that, his breathing slowing back down as hide starts to do it automatically once more, no longer needing wheeze for words, and he slowly half-smiles around the tube in his mouth.  if kaneki was here, it couldn’t be that bad, right?

          he tries for nonchalant shrugging, and hide puts on a gigawatt smile--if he keeps smiling and fooling enough people, haise will ( hopefully? ) drop the subject.

HIDE NAGACHIKA IS CAPABLE OF LYING

          it’s supposed to be a bloody mess of a fight, he’s told--high risk of nobody coming back from this one.  granted, that’s what they’ve normally signed up for, but this time, looking at the places they’re going to be going--it’s next to certain that rose and the tsukiyama family won’t take kindly to the invasion of their home.  

          he can hear his brother barking out orders, but once hide gets his, and the order to move in begins, he takes his earpiece out and covers his ears with the same big, bulky headphones he used to use in college--he had hidden them away so nobody would question it--and turned his music on.  he’s aware that the sudden combination of metal-and-dubstep blaring at full volume must be startling, from the way sasaki looks over at him and starts saying something, but hide just takes that as his cue to go, quickly moving to engage in combat with the guards walking the perimetre.

          and hide flips over one easily enough, slamming the blade of his naginata into one of the guards and then the music he’s listening to drops the bass---and that’s when hide ducks down under a kagune, spinning around and moving to stand as he does, quinque meeting ghoul flesh as a knife to butter.
