Next to Normal is so important to me because of how we not only see how Diana’s mental health affect herself but her whole family. (This is soundtrack only)
The father is introduced to us as a figure who is trying to keep everything together because he is the last sense of normalcy for not only his wife but daughter too. He cannot afford to grieve his child or wife because he has responsibilities and a role to fulfill.
I’ve Been is such a strong song because of this. Same with I Am The One- Reprise where he is given the chance to let go of his caretaking burden and break. Gabe has been haunting him this whole time- same as Diana- only he never allowed himself to notice.
Throughout the musical he is far from the perfect husband or father at times but this is because he is also mentally unwell which is touched upon in Who’s Crazy/My Psychopharmacologist. Once again, he puts this on the back burner until he can’t anymore.
And then there’s Natalie, the glass child to her deceased brother.
She is angry because that is what’s easiest for her to be. For her whole life, she’s never really had a mother and even though her father is present and trying his best, Natalie is rarely the main focus. So, she focuses on school so she can get out of where she is. To her, distance is the best option.
What’s most important is that her anger is a front for her fear and pain. It’s the safest way Natalie has deemed it to manifest which shows in songs like Song of Forgetting or Superboy and The Invisible Girl. She’s truly traumatized in a way the audience doesn’t get to hear the full extent of until Hey #3, a song which pulls my heart every time. Same deal with Maybe (Next to Normal) when she admits to her mother that sometimes she wished she would die but always feared it would happen.
I could ramble forever but at the end of the day, I love how this musical explores how Diana’s mental health struggles intertwine with and change her family members relationship with their own.
