saw someone point out that in next to normal every time weather is mentioned it's bad weather and it got me thinking about just another day.

dan is surprised that diana thinks it's such a beautiful day because it's "cloudy and raining and really cold for September" but later on in the song gabe sings "the morning sun is stunning."

just another detail that gabe is an extension of diana's perception

Might make my first official artwork of the summer be a painting of the Next to Normal proshot, specifically the scene in Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling Reprise where Diana and Gabe are on the counter. Yk. That amazing moment. The absolutely gorgeous scene. The most "this really makes me want to paint" moment ever. The most artable thing in history. My absolutely beloved Gabe and Diana on counter scene.

to make it better, Henry talks to Natalie about how Jazz is a "better" version of music because its less restricted and "freer", which is later something Natalie reflects on in her breakdown at her recital during "Make up your mind/catch me I'm falling". Natalie spends her whole life feeling trapped and restricted because of Gabe and her mother's grief. And her mother imagines that Gabe would be unrestricted and free, the opposite of Natalie. He isn't bound by any rules, because he is everything Diana wants him to be. He is bound by nothing because he isn't there and he is freer than Natalie can ever be. It's reflected in everything down to the type of music they play

Natalie's arc in n2n is so wild. she's afraid of becoming like her mother. her mother doesn't remember her. she's smart and accomplished but it's going down the drain. she doesn't want to be crazy. she's on the same drugs her mother is and she's 16 years old. everything is about her mother and nobody is there for her. makes me cry every time.

you don't even get it!!! aaron tveit's gabe is the villain in next to normal bc he's the manifestation of diana's mental illness and delusions. but jack wolfe's gabe isn't evil! he's not a terror! he is a ghost! he is the photographs and the music and the little shoes and the blanket! everything he does is out of fear, not malice! he is a little boy up in heaven who doesn't want his mom and dad to forget him! he wants his mama to love him!

So does anyone have the Next to Normal PBS proshot video file? I know it's been posted to youtube but it keeps getting taken down and I want to have a copy downloaded so I can watch it after it expires on PBS/with my friend when we go on vacation and don't have service

in light of the Next to Normal proshot releasing in the US, have this drawing i did ages ago inspired by the Donmar Warehouse music box (it’s kind of hard to tell but there was a mini gabe inside)

i’m listening and watching to Next to Normal for the first time and NATALIE DESERVED SO MUCH MORE. i know Diana and Dan had so much going on but she was 16 years old and was parenting her parents instead of being a child. Diana literally says they had her to replace Gabe 😭

Just checked and the Broadway version has Gabe come down from the upper level for the very last line of the final song, while the West End one keeps him up there the entire time. Genuinely in love with the narrative implications of each choice
