Bolbbalgan4 - ‘Red Diary Page.2′ Album Review
Tumblr media
I’m so excited to listen to these chart-topping, GP-friendly artists’ latest release!
Wind
For some reason, I feel like I’ve heard this song before. I’m not necessarily saying that the melody line sounds similar to anything, but that there is no real catchy hook or stand out line that distinguished this track in my mind. It just seems a bit bland to me, as a casual listener. I feel like they’ve done more memorable slow tracks in previous albums. Thus, unfortunately, this first track is a skip for me.
Travel
I love these girls’ voices so much and the instrumentals in this track is absolutely gold. I just feel like the intro made the song seem like a more low-key track, so I was a bit disappointed when it got to the chorus and I realized it was more of an upbeat/pop track... Nevertheless, another super easy-to-listen to song!! Absolutely love Jiyoung‘s verse in the beginning before the chorus though!
Starlight
This feels so redundant, but their voices are literally so beautiful and unique. My favorite melodic line has to be “shining starlight beautiful night, I want to stand by your side for a long time,” because it sounds so hopeful... Then when they start singing “I feel you feel you” near the end with the orchestra... The vibes I get are quite sad, but also sweet? I don’t know how to put these feelings into words. I do feel like they could have varied up the lyrics a bit more, or at least added some harmonies, especially at the end as they sing “feel you” over and over again, but nevertheless, a nice listen!
안녕,곰인형 (Hey Teddy Bear)
Surprisingly, I think my favorite part of this song is the chorus (the beginning part at least)! I usually prefer the verses of BB4 songs, but the emotions when singing “Hey teddy bear, hello. Are you doing well? I still sometimes miss you, as I am without you” really catches my attention right away. The melodic line is also solid there as well.
Clip
Really like this song, but since the two singers have such distinct voices, I feel like when they sing together, it sounds a little disjointed. For example, at the end of the chorus when they sing “yeah yeah yeah yeah” x2, I think the sound could have been less jarring if it had been just one of the girls singing/ad-libbing. But I gotta say, the thing I like the most about BB4 is that their songs are so simple and clean sounding. There isn’t a lot of excessive layers, the melody line is comprehensive, and the lyrics are pretty simple. It makes for very public-friendly songs!
Lonely
I am a sucker for songs with just piano accompaniment, so I was automatically drawn to this track. It’s kind of interesting how the initial piano piece is so different from the actual song in both tempo and melody line. It’s not a turn off nor a turn on, but just a trend that I’ve been seeing pop up again lately in music. Overall, I appreciate how they didn’t add any over instruments to the instrumental, and the mood the song gave off set the perfect tone to wrap up the album.
I noticed that BB4 really likes to “ad-lib” in their songs with “oohs” and “yeahs” which makes for less actual lyrics. It’s totally not a complaint, just a mere observation! I feel like that may actually help contribute to how popular they are with the general public. Their songs are simple, but not generic. Different, but not too eclectic. They’re true musicians.

BTS - ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ Album Review
Tumblr media
I am seriously blown away by BTS’ latest full album. Every single track showcases amazing vocals/rap and thought-provoking lyrics. Here are some of my thoughts after having ‘LY: Tear’ on repeat literally all day.
Intro: Singularity
TAEHYUNG. The sexuality oozes from this song and sets the perfect tone for the rest of the album. The whole sound is so deep and rich, and I expected nothing less from the King. Also, have you SEEN the choreo for this one? That arm move is absolutely crazy.
FAKE LOVE
“LOVE YOU SO BAD, LOVE YOU SO BAD, MOLD A PRETTY LIE FOR YOU” Literally my favorite line both melodically and lyrically. Also, Jimin singing “woo, I dunno, I dunno, I dunno why” is so enchanting. I love. The syncopation in this song is really ear-catching, too. And loving the triplet action from rap line! I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THIS ONE. IT’S SO GOOD. UGH THEIR MINDS, THE MUSICAL GENIUSES.
The Truth Untold (ft. Steve Aoki)
Wow, was not expecting this ballad from a Steve Aoki collab, but what the hell??? It sounds so good?? When Taehyung sings “I am afraid, I am run-down, I’m so afraid” his tone is so impactful. Love the minimal acoustics in that part, and then having the heavy instrumentals come in as Jin sings his impactful lines... wow. That is really all I can say. I’m speechless.
134340
This song is totally different from Bangtan’s usually sound in that it has a very mellow ambience. The song was good, but not stand-out in my eyes, until we got near the end. Ugh that breakdown at Hoseok’s rap. GO OFF! The muted instrumentals set the perfect backdrop for the King spitting absolute FIRE. Saved me.
Paradise
THE IRREGULAR BEAT. IS EVERYTHING. Jimin’s verse in the beginning though... after Jungkook’s soft voice, Jimin’s sensuality came out of NOWHERE and literally ATTACKED me. Actually, his tone throughout this whole song hit me so hard. Also, Yoongi’s rap is literally gold? And how it transitions so smoothly to Hoseok’s verse is flawless? What a bop.
Love Maze
Jungkook’s part in the beginning is SO GOOD melodically. His voice completely caught my attention right away. Then, Namjoon’s legendary “Let them be them let us be us” came through! Wow. His diction sounds SO clear in this album and it makes me so excited.
Magic Shop
FIrstly, Jin sounds SO good. His voice is so airy and fragile(?) and beautiful and fits the vibes of this song so WELL. It especially contrasts well with Namjoon’s hard hitting rap right before his verse. Hoseok singing “Like a rose flower, like a cherry tree, like a morning glory, like a beautiful moment” WAS A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT. I love listening to him sing honestly and the beat breakdown at that point is especially memorable. Also, Yoongi’s inflection when he rapped “but then, looking back, in fact I do not think I wanted to be the best” is so amazing. I need more of that voice from him! By the way, the producing for this track is GOLD. In love with this sound. Especially the chorus.
Airplane pt.2
What are these vibes I’m getting from this track? Expected nothing less from international superstars! I could totally get down to this dirty beat. Really like when Jin sings “we still” before every line when Namjoon raps near the beginning of the song. It’s a little detail, but it adds so much texture to that verse. Also, loving that little Hope World cameo from Hoseok. FAV.
Anpanman
KILL ME TAEHYUNG WITH YOUR “WAITING FOR YOU ANPANMAN.” It sounds SO GOOD. HIS VOICE IS EVERYTHING. On another note, my aesthetic is when ot7 sings “spin and spin my Anpan, keep ballin’, ballin’ still Bangtan.” Oh yeah, they’re still the Bangtan we’ve always known and loved.
So What
What a summer party anthem. It’s a bop all around but my favorite part HAS to be Namjoon’s verse, when he raps “I don’t wanna die right now, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna fight right now.” His VOICE. It sounds so clear and amazing that it totally caught my attention right away.
Outro: Tear
Ummm... THIS GOES SO HARD I DID NOT EXPECT BUT I AM BLESSED. Namjoon’s solo “You’re my tear” part is SO GOOD. Then, Hoseok’s verse that comes right after is so HARD HITTING. His angst comes THRU. Also that doubling in Yoongi’s verse when he wraps “This is real you, and this is real me. I’ve now seen the end, and even my resentment doesn’t remain” and there’s this autotuned voice in the background... it’s frickin EVERYTHING. SO MANY LAYERS AND SO MANY DIFFERENT TEXTURES I’M IN LOVE.
So this album is the bop of the century. I would say try to change my mind, but I already know no one will be able to.

PENTAGON - “Shine” Review
Tumblr media
Shine
I absolutely love that part between E’Dawn and Hui when they sing “I am a loser who loves you” and “Yeah I am a fool fool,” etc. The two vocal textures are so different and I love the contrast. IT’S SO CATCHY. THIS WHOLE SONG IS SO CATCHY. It’s seriously so under-appreciated. "Shine” has every potential to go viral in Korea and I’m honestly surprised that it hasn’t yet. Come on Korean GP! Open your ears~
So excited to see where they go from here. I hear they’re already hard at work for their next comeback, so I’ll be on the lookout for that!

BTOB - ‘Piece of BTOB’ Album Review
I have been holding off on listening to the boys’ solo endeavors, so that I can listen to them all at once and get the full BTOB experience. I bet it’s going to be amazing blend of genres, so I can’t wait to get started! **warning: super long and in-depth**
Rating: ★★★★☆
At the End (Changsub)
What a lovely, amazing ballad track. I really like the “rock” feel that cropped up at 1:11. The added instrumentals were definitely unexpected, but it was super natural in that it broke up the sound nicely. And of course, Changsub sounds stunning. I do wish that when he composed the song, he made his vocals louder and the instrumentals more subdued. I feel like the electric guitar and drums swallowed his amazing voice (especially throughout the last half of the song) and it’s such a shame. Those high notes deserve to shine!
Fancy Shoes (Ilhoon)
I really like Ilhoon’s rapping style. When I just listen leisurely, it’s sounds rather calm and relaxing, but if I pay attention, he’s actually rapping so quickly. That’s pretty cool. Gotta say, I’m not the biggest fan of the chorus... It’s not bad, it just sounds like something I’ve heard before. However, as you can probably guess, I love his rap verses--especially that first verse. His diction and composed tone drew me right in.
THAT GIRL (PENIEL)
It’s my boy! The synth-y instrumentals sound so good, and that bass line though! It’s the perfect accompaniment to PENIEL’s amazing, distinct tone. I love the “That girl oo la la la” part, even if it is pretty repetitive. It’s just so catchy. I only wish the song was longer! It’s not even three minutes long... I feel like he could have done a bit more with the verses, especially in the build up to the choruses. I don’t know... can you blame a girl for wanting to listen to PENIEL’s voice a little longer?
SWIMMING (Hyunsik)
Goddamn. Hyunsik’s vocals get me every time. It’s so soothing, but raw and emotional... And those high notes at the climax with the electric guitar... Wow. However, I do feel like the ending was a little lack-luster in my opinion... I feel like something was missing? It’s like there’s no closure to this beautiful song. Nevertheless, I don’t think it really takes too much away from the overall track. It’s just so beautiful. I know I used the word “beautiful” like 10 times already, but there really is no other word to describe “SWIMMING.” It’s just art at its finest. Beautiful.
Purple Rain (Minhyuk ft. CHEEZE)
I absolutely love songs with a male and female vocal, so this track caught my interest right away! I really appreciate the simple string instrumentals because it accentuates the vocals so well. They both sound so creamy... like butter... and when Minhyuk’s smooth singing voice comes in, it knocks me away. Every time. Even though I’m expecting it. And I can’t not talk about the climax where he raps with such RAW EMOTION. However, afterwards, I do feel like the transition from Minhyuk to CHEEZE (from powerful to soft) is a bit jarring... I feel like if the producer had put a longer pause before going into the melody, it would have flowed a little more. Nevertheless, this is the PERFECT late-night song, or reading accompaniment song, or rainy-mood song, or studying song, or... it’s just the perfect song in general?
말해 (Tell Me by YOOK SUNG JAE)
How beautifully heartbreaking... I feel like I can hear every granule, every lilt, every emotion in SUNG JAE’s voice and I am so emotionally overwhelmed. Also, can we talk about the masterpiece that is the instrumentals? I love orchestral sounds and they definitely delivered it in this Disney soundtrack-esque song. I can’t believe it’s over four minutes long... I feel like the song ends way too quickly every time I listen to it!
이제 겨우 하루 (One Day by Seo Eunkwang)
INSTRUMENTALS. I LOVE THE STRINGS. Also, Eunkwang’s voice is so so so sweet. He portrays an avalanche of emotions through every note and every word. What a roller coaster. Yeah, I knew this project would end emotionally, but I wasn’t expecting THIS. A perfect night time listen or at the end of a nice romantic movie.
I really appreciate being able to listen to the boys shine on their own and learn the individual members’ styles. They’re so great. Nevertheless, I’m super excited for music from the whole group soon! Until then, I’ll have these tracks on repeat.

DAY6 - “I Loved You” Review
Tumblr media
Trusty, monthly DAY6 is back once again!
I Loved You
Oh wow. This is such a BEAUTIFUL song. When Wonpil’s part started and his voice started increasing in volume/emotion as the instrumentals built up... how can I explain how I felt the first time I heard that specific moment in words? I just really appreciate this stripped down ballad with a touch of their rock flair. A lot.
The boys are definitely going for the slower, sweet songs the second half of the year and I’m ALL FOR IT.

EXO - “Power” Review
Tumblr media
EXO is back with their repackage and I am so intrigued.
Power
This sounds like something straight out of a kid’s superhero movie/show and I have never felt more conflicted. I really like the happy, light hearted vibes of the song and the overall message it’s conveying, but “Power” is a song that’s pretty hard to listen to casually. I just don’t think this is a track that I’ll be listening to often because it’s so youthful(?)/different. I feel like I’ll have to be in the right mood to really enjoy it for what it is. But again, kudos to SM for trying something new.
SM is really pushing the group to experiment with different sounds, and I’m a little nervous for them to be honest. It’s gone pretty well so far, but EXO’s discography is starting to get very interesting...

B.A.P - “HONEYMOON” Review
Tumblr media
B.A.P is back with a dance track this second half of the year and I can’t wait to hear their sound.
HONEYMOON
The whistling is a really nice touch in the beginning! I feel like it’s definitely a trend in the music scene right now and I’m loving it. Also, Himchan sounds SO good in the beginning. I can hear the desperation(?) in his vocal tone. It’s so raw. Actually, all the guys sound pretty raw/powerful. That is something I’ve noticed about B.A.P. Although their instrumentals tend to be strong, their vocals can be distinctly heard.
I am not completely familiar with B.A.P’s discography admittedly, but I feel like they changed has evolved quite a bit throughout the years and they are a lot more “general public friendly” now. If you aren’t the biggest fan of B.A.P past discography, I encourage you to take another listen.

HyunA - “BABE” Review
Tumblr media
HyunA is back and I can’t wait to listen to her magic.
베베 (BABE)
The tune is just weird enough that it works. Super well. I just love the lax way she uses her voice. It’s ear-catching, but also easy to listen to. I really like when she sings, “You make me 19, 19, 19 // You make me 17, 17, 17 // I feel like 15, 15, 15.″ It’s just so catchy and cute. I also appreciate the rather simple instrumentals. It highlights HyunA’s unique voice well, while not making the song sound flat or lackluster. Not going to lie, I’m not completely sure on the random robotic/autotuned sound effect that they decided to add to the end, but I’m really digging this track overall!
HyunA is just a dichotomy within herself and I love that about her and her music.

Heize - “In the Time Spent With You” Review
Tumblr media
Heize is back with a remake of Seo Taiji’s “In the Time Spent With You” and I can’t wait to listen to it on this lazy morning.
너와 함께한 시간 속에서 (In the Time Spent With You)
I love the instrumentals on this one. It’s a little different from her other tracks in that it reverberates and sounds a bit “louder” and is more noticeable. It’s still super soothing though, which I love and appreciate. The song felt a little anti-climactic at 2:05 and I would have really appreciated an extended high note there or something different, but it’s really not a big deal in the scheme of the whole song. Another thing I wanted to talk about is the fact that it seems like she uses her head voice a lot and her vocals actually sound rather nasally(?) at times, but she still manages to give off the calming effect, which is so interesting to me. Her artistry in general is so interesting to me. I love it.
The classic “Heize sound” that I will never get sick of, incorporated into an iconic Seo Taiji track. My dreams come true.

HUR YOUNG JI - “Memory Clock” Review
Tumblr media
Young Ji has debuted as a solo artist and I can’t wait to check out her sound!
추억시계 (Memory Clock)
The transition from the intro to the actual singing seems rather stunted, which caught me off guard, but the song itself is really nice and relaxing. I do wish there were more extended high notes or changes in dynamic and tone to spice up the track a little, but I think “Memory Clock” is a solid debut ballad that perfectly caters to the Korean general public.
I’m excited to see where her future career path takes her! I think she has what it takes to make it big.

PRISTIN - “WE LIKE” Review
Tumblr media
PRISTIN is back with their second mini album! After not really digging their last title, “WEE WOO,” I’m a little nervous to take a listen to this one, but I’m mostly excited to see how their sound has developed.
WE LIKE
I’m excited to hear the girls use less of their “cutesy” sound and more of their true vocals! Sungyeon’s vocals especially caught my attention. When she sings “I know that” and does the extended note in the background of Xiyeon’s part at 2:42, it sounds really nice. I’m not the biggest fan of the “du-du-du-du-du-du” line and the track as a whole is rather repetitive, but it is undeniably catchy!
This is such a big step from “WEE WOO” in my opinion. I think the girls of PRISTIN have a long, open path ahead of them to develop as idols, singers, and artists in general, and I’m stroked to see where they go from here!

SUNMI - “Gashina” Review
Tumblr media
SUNMI is back and I can’t wait to listen to her first release after the Wonder Girls officially disbanded.
가시나 (Gashina)
What a bop! The instrumental is tropical and super catchy. Of course, her voice is clear and almost harsh(?) sounding, which sets the light/carefree tone of the track really well. The ending felt a little incomplete and the overall sound of “Gashina” is kind of overused in the music scene right now, but I would be nit-picking if I found that as any kind of a turn off.
All around, such a fun summer release from the goddess herself. A gem.

Loco - “Summer Go Loco” (ft. GRAY) Review
Tumblr media
Loco is back with a summer release and I am so excited!
Summer Go Loco (ft. GRAY)
Cha Cha Malone always produces the most amazing songs and this one is no different. It does kinda remind me of Jay Park’s discography a lot, but still A+ instrumentals. Also, I don’t think I’ve heard of GRAY before this track, but I like his tone! It has a nice deep, chilling sound that I can’t really describe. And of course, Loco sounds great in this track as well. I will never get over the “lazy rap” sound that many artists are going for these days!
"Summer Go Loco” is a nice track--perfect for those summer days when you’re just chilling. I don’t think this is my favorite song from him, but it’s by no means a bad song! I guess I was just looking for something uniquely Loco, and unfortunately this is a track that sounds a little too generic to fully accomplish that.

Red Velvet - “Rebirth” Review
Tumblr media
Red Velvet’s on SM Station! I’m intrigued to see what kind of sound they go for...
환생 (Rebirth)
It’s pretty cool to hear Red Velvet sing a “slower” song! Their voices are the perfect combo of soft and dainty, but with their distinct sound that makes them uniquely RV. I gotta say, I really like the motif that goes up and down the scale--it’s so simple and cute (it kind of reminds me of a Disney soundtrack). The “rap”/talking part isn’t really my cup of tea and I feel like the producers at SM could definitely have done more with the song, like layering and adding background vocals/ad-libs, but “Rebirth” is a solid easy-listen all around!
A uniquely cute song, made perfect for the uniquely cute group. Like I mentioned earlier, I feel like something more could have been done to add some texture/dimension to the song, but it’s still a nice track for sure!

Taeyang - ‘White Night’ Album Review
Tumblr media
Taeyang is finally back with his third full album and I can’t wait to hear all that he has to offer.
Rating: ★★★★☆
白夜 (White Night)
Taeyang sounds so good. The chorus is especially catchy. I love everything, I just wish this track was three times longer... I feel like it could have been developed into something jaw dropping. What a cool intro to this album; I’m officially hype.
WAKE ME UP
To be honest, I wasn’t completely sure about this song in the beginning... It’s definitely one that I’ve had to listen to a couple times in order to start jiving with it. The ambience created by the instrumentals is so mellow and amazing, but I keep thinking that the track’s lacking something... maybe consistency? The chorus feels just a teeny tiny bit too disco-y compared to the softer sounding verses. However, the more and more I listen to this track, the more and more I fall in love with it. I guess I was just expecting a more chill track overall. Nevertheless, a beautiful song.
DARLING
This song is so “2013 Taeyang” if you know what I mean. It really makes me reminisce the music of those days. I really appreciate the simple, but powerful instrumentals that both accent and complement Taeyang’s strong vocals so well. The song sounds so pure and organic(?). At first listen, I was totally taken off guard by the tempo of this song and its general lack of structure, but after a couple listens, I think that’s the best characteristic of this track.
RIDE
Oh, the instrumentals in the beginning... That combination of sound is amazing. I really like when Taeyang sings, “Big city bright lights.” His tone is so stripped down and it just caught my attention right away. The syncopation is also really cool. I feel like “RIDE” is one of those songs that belongs in a classy bar’s playlist. It just gives off that certain mood.
AMAZIN’
What a fun track! For some reason, I wasn’t expecting the song to sound like this, and I’m glad. I feel like the instrumentals could have been a little louder in the chorus to really bring out the upbeat, cheery, carefree ambiance, and the chorus is a little too repetitive for my taste, but it’s still a jam.
텅빈도로 (EMPTY ROAD)
Acoustic-accompanied Taeyang is my favorite. His voice suits the guitar so well. I think this just might be my favorite song off the whole album! I feel like his tone sounds especially clear in this track, and you can really hear each inflection and emotion behind his words. Taeyang does simple best. I do feel like the song ended a little abruptly though... I think this track could have been developed into something more, but it never really happened, which is a little disappointing because it sounds so good.
NAKED
The instrumentals. So unique. So fresh. So different. I don’t really care for the lyrics very much, but it’s powerful and Taeyang’s vocals works perfectly with this song.
오늘밤 (TONIGHT ft. ZICO)
I think this is a solid outro song. It has an air of finality that I can’t really explain. ZICO sounds great, as always. Taeyang sounds so good, as expected. However, the song overall didn’t really leave a lasting impression on me, unfortunately. It has such a cool vibe though that I can’t ignore!
One thing I really appreciate about Taeyang’s songs is that it’s his strong vocals that really hard carry the tracks. The instrumentals, although nice, are quite simple and easily slip into the background. It’s his voice that is heard loud and clear. This kind of technique is rather “old” and not very popular/mainstream these days (other than in ballad form), so it’s really refreshing to hear in my opinion. A non-conventional, solid album.
