(A Twitter post by @/ratlimit):
"Is there a law saying laws must be followed?"
(Sridhar Ramesh (@/RadishHarmers) responds by sharing another post made by him, dated 8 Jun 22):
"The trouble with making crime illegal is that people are willing to break the law. To fix this, we have made breaking the law illegal."
(@/ratlimit responds):
"Glad you can instantly recollect having said something 3 years ago. Your words must be precious to you"
(To which @/RadishHarmers responds with a different post, also made by him, dated 21 Aug 21):
"I remember word for word, comma for comma, every joke I've ever made, from grade school to present. But often with laughs that weren't there."

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

I’m not a linguist, so there’s every possibility in the world that I’m not defining things correctly, but in the same way that cold is the absence of heat, I do think that shame is the absence of pride.
It’d be easy to say that it’s silly to be ashamed of aspects of yourself, but that’s neither true nor fair. If you’re ashamed of the circumstances of your birth, that doesn’t come from you, that comes from a world that has socially conditioned you to believe you are less than.
I grew up in a politically conservative family. I’d be in the car or on the couch or in the kitchen and my parents would have on conservative talk radio or fox news or similar, and I was conditioned to think that my gender issues were something that I should be ashamed of, something I needed to keep hidden.
My shame was a learned behavior taught to me by my family.
It took decades, but I did learn to love myself.
I did come out.
I did develop a sense of pride over who I am.
If you’re someone who’s in the closet, or someone who is struggling with their identity, or feeling shame over who you are, you’re not alone.
You’re also not to blame for feeling that shame. There are always going to be people who try to “other” folks. Those people are the issue, not you.
It takes time to overcome the feeling; it doesn’t happen overnight.
Someday, I hope you can feel the same pride I do now.
Happy pride.

Fair weather friends. This could be purely anecdotal ( maybe just my area) but companies felt quieter this year.
It means that society has shifted to a place where it can be risky to launch pride campaigns. They don't want a Bud Light or Target situation like we had last year. By no means do I like rainbow capitalism but these companies pulling out because of "risk management" is scary. I don't want to buy a tacky T-shirt or have their meaningless approval, but I liked the feeling that they felt bold enough to "support" us.
Good riddance, we didn't need those performative companies.

NEW: A Letter To The Trans Teen Thinking About Giving Up
The #SCOTUS decision on U.S. v. Skrmetti was devastating. This decision does massive harm just by existing, and will absolutely do harm to many young #trans people in the United States. But please don't interpret this decision as a death sentence, or believe anyone who tells you that without the government's support, you or all young trans people in the United States will die. As Andy Izerson explains in this deeply caring and thoughtful letter for trans teens, trans people have always existed and survived without the government's help, and you can exist and survive yourself now without it if you must (you shouldn't have to, but you can), because we always have each other. "I really wish that the circumstances were different and I was writing you this letter to say, “Great news friend! The supreme court gave us a break today!” or to say, “Guess what, here’s how to run your endocrine system on manual without having to ask anybody’s permission!” or to say, “The state has given up on trying to destroy us!” From the bottom of my heart, I’m so sorry that this sucks so bad. I wouldn’t blame you if you feel scared, because I’m scared, too. But listen: there’s a story of the future that has you in it. That story has some scary parts and some parts that hurt, but it also has some beautiful parts. There’s a future you who is surrounded by meaning and connection and beauty, and who has people around them that will catch them when they stumble and hug them when they get up. There’s a future you who doesn’t depend on the state for anything because they are seen and held and loved by community, who can reach out their own hand to the next generations of queer and trans people and pass along some of this stuff to them, just like I’m passing it to you now. There’s a future you who is living a life that’s cooler than you can even imagine in the present, and who doesn’t feel the way you feel in the wake of this decision. And I am determined to meet that person and high five them." You'll find the letter here:

And don't forget: we're some of that community you can always reach out to for help and support. <3

Fun fact: the guys at our college’s geology department prop out the doors with their samples. I totally understand why but as someone whose work with samples is necessarily super delicate and sterile it fucks me up so bad

Why am I posting this?
Because I know I have a lot of young people following me, and because over the past few years, I've seen a shocking amount of anti-gay rhetoric in MY comment section. Of my Steven Universe fancomic. An extremely lgbtq-friendly show.
So what gives? My best guess is, I have a very wide following, and a lot of these readers are pretty socially insulated in conservative spaces that don't allow them to explore the concepts of the other side of the argument.
I'm not about to judge children on the environment they were raised in... but I'm also here. I'm a part of the environment. And I'd like to offer some perspectives.
If you don't agree with how I present things - great! Make your own post.
