अपनी ननिहाल मनगढ़ में जन्मे राम कृपालु त्रिपाठी ने गाँव के ही मिडिल स्कूल से 7वीं कक्षा तक की शिक्षा प्राप्त की और उसके बाद आगे की पढ़ाई के लिये महू, मध्य प्रदेश चले गये। अपने ननिहाल में ही पत्नी पद्मा के साथ गृहस्थ जीवन की शुरुआत की और राधा-कृष्ण की भक्ति में तल्लीन हो गये।

कृपालु महाराज का जन्म ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था जगदगुरू श्री कृपालुजी महाराज का कोई गुरु नहीं है और वे स्वयं जगतगुरु है यह पहले जगतगुरु है जिन्होंने एक भी शिष्य नहीं बनाया ,किंतु इनके लाखों अनुयाई है जगदगुरू श्री कृपालुजी महाराज वर्तमान काल में मूल जगतगुरु है भारत के इतिहास में इनके पूर्व लगभग 3000 वर्ष में चार और मौलिक जगतगुरु हो चुके हैं किंतु श्री कृपालु जी महाराज के जगद्गुरु होने में एक अनूठी विशेषता यह है कि उन्हें “जगतगुरुत्तम” की उपाधि से विभूषित किया गया है
