Moving Out, Moving Up
Moving Out, Moving Up
Hey, there’s exciting news today! It’s been a little quiet around here because I’ve been working diligently on a new home for my blog. It’s undergone about 25 name changes, looks, colors and layouts, but it’s finally getting close to where I want it. The switch will happen very soon, so I wanted to give you a heads up. I’ll be posting there soon and asking you to join me in our comfy new space.…

Demon Days Waffles with Bacon with Virginia Craft Brews Magazine
Demon Days Waffles with Bacon with Virginia Craft Brews Magazine
In this summer’s issue of Virginia Craft Brews, I created a recipe using a delicious local beer from Triple Crossing Brewing Company‘s Demon Days Red Ale. It’s a delicious beer, better than many red ales I’ve tried, and the guys running this brewery are top-notch. You can make these waffles with an amber, stout or lager as well. To get the full recipe and to read more, get your online issue of…

Saison Market
I love seeing thriving new restaurants with incredibly inventive cuisine tuck into the most unexpected places. Many old and new restaurants in Richmond have followed this model, such as The Black Sheep, The Magpie, Saison, The Rogue Gentlemen, Mamma Zu and Pasture. One second you’re walking down a street that seems almost forgotten – and one step through the doors and you’re transported into…

The Old School Charm of Roy's Big Burger
The Old School Charm of Roy’s Big Burger
Roy’s Big Burger is an old Richmond, VA classic. The drive-up stand offers a covered walk-up for ordering and a window to watch the cook prepare burgers as you look on trying to guess which one is yours. There is no dining room and no drive-through, just a couple picnic tables, which most patrons don’t use. Tradition at Roy’s is to eat in your car while you sit in the parking lot. And some things…

Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Quarters
Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Quarters
Nothing tastes quite like summer to me as grilled foods flavored with fresh herbs and lemon. It’s a simple combination of bright flavors that makes your taste buds suddenly alert, like the lights came on and everyone wants to know what’s going on. I remember having this feeling of “mouth alertness” during almost every meal I ate in my travels in Greece. I can still remember the sweet, salty,…

RVA Restaurant Preview: Chuy's Midlothian
RVA Restaurant Preview: Chuy’s Midlothian
I love Tex-Mex food. There. I said it.
Salsa Fresca – Comes with your chips and it is SO good.
Tex-Mex gets a bad rap, but I’m not sure why. Who doesn’t love chiles, cheese, tortillas, meat and more cheese? It’s not authentic Mexican food, but I think that’s okay. It’s not trying to be. Tex-Mex is kind of like jazz; multiple cultural influences can bring out some really wonderful things. (more…)

RVA Restaurant Preview: Fan Noodle Bar
RVA Restaurant Preview: Fan Noodle Bar
I was lucky enough to be invited to the VIP preview night for a new spot in town called Fan Noodle Bar. The owners Sonny and Zow Kiatsuranon officially open the doors tonight for dinner service, with lunch and late night service coming soon. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with a lot of white and silver grey furniture and a nice long, rounded bar. There are little neon-colored uplighting…

Pan-Seared Tautog with Brown Butter Ramps and Asparagus
Pan-Seared Tautog with Brown Butter Ramps and Asparagus
Growing up, I hated eating fish. Crazy, right? I mean, I really hated it – so much that I would stand outside in protest with arms crossed while my dad made salmon for the rest of the family. Often I would make my dad open every window in the house and turn on every ceiling fan before he seared off a piece of flounder. If that wasn’t enough to make the smell go away, I’d just get sick.…

Easy and Delicious Slow Cooker Pho
Easy and Delicious Slow Cooker Pho
If there’s one food I eat at least once a week (besides wine), it’s pho. That’s right, the butt of all “pho-king” jokes people make. I’m not going to make those jokes, even though now that we’ve talked about it, I want to. The reason people make those jokes is because pho is delicious. It’s so delicious that “delicious” doesn’t do it justice, so you want to call it “effin’ delicious.” The pun…
