Amateur piano arranger and Chinese translator... I try to keep to a weekly schedule, but it's unlikely I'll be able to do that between December 2023 and February 2024. Usually lazy. Feel free to contact if looking for Hakuoki content to translate. Any video not on my youtube account is only available on my private blog. I do not point out what my rules are since they are something anyone can find if they actually look, and because I have a general annoyance to pointing out what my bare minimum rule is. According to his now deleted post, Taira's leaving Hakumyu.
Tumblr media
Okay the official Hakumyu account said that Toudou-hen was going to be the last time with this Shinkai cast, or something to that effect, but who cares about that in the grand scheme of things because this is Taira.
Taira's been there since almost forever.
Just.
WHYYYYYYY.

Hakuoki Travel Guide "Nijo Castle's Honmaru Yaguramon Gate"
second post today! more oni content.
enjoy~
Hakuoki Travel Guide "Nijo Castle's Honmaru Yaguramon Gate" (本丸櫓門)
‌‍‌Translation by KumoriYami‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌
Kazama: This castle was built by humans for the shogun to stay at.
Amagiri: To be more precise, this is the main gate to Nijo castle.
Shiranui: This gate may be able to stop humans, but it can't stop us.
Shiranui: Speaking of which, I came this time to confirm if the girl who was moving with the Shinsengumi is a female oni.
Amagiri: Thank you for your assistance then.
Shiranui: No need to be so formal, it just happens that I wasn't doing anything then.
Shiranui: Right, why do you think that woman is a female oni?
Kazama: The Shinsengumi dogs called her "Yukimura," additionally, she is carrying "Shotsuren."
Shiranui: The Yukimura were previously the most powerful oni clan in the east, but Shotsuren... what's that?
Amagiri: From the oldest of the eastern oni clans, the Yukimura family's kodachi Shotsuren has been passed down for generations.
Amagiri: Its counterpart, Daitsuren, was originally carried by the head of the Yukimura family.
Amagiri: Since the Yukimura family was exterminated, the whereabouts of the two swords are unknown.
Shiranui: Oh? I see, so she has the Yukimura family surname and that kodachi, huh. Amagiri: Yes, regardless, if she truly is a descendent of the Yukimura family, I would like to invite her to live in the western clans.
Kazama: A female oni is precious, and since she comes from the Yukimura clan, her lineage alone is quite good.
Kazama: It's only appropriate to bring her back to the village so she can give birth to a child.
Shiranui: Whether that sort of thinking is appropriate or not doesn't matter, it's difficult for oni and humans to get along.
Shiranui: Maybe it's just that oni are only able to get along with other oni.
Kazama: Hmph, it's rare to be in agreement with you.
Shiranui: What nonsense are you saying, the only thing we're in agreement is how 'it's difficult to get along with humans.'
Amagiri: In any case, it's a fact that there are not many female oni.
Shiranui: Well, well... Our oni clans normally don't have many offspring, and they're mostly male oni.
Shiranui: Oh, that's right, speaking of female oni, isn't there one in the capital? That female oni's clan...
Amagiri: Indeed, that matter has been brought up several times.
Amagiri: Kazama, how about paying a courtesy visit?
Kazama:...For what reason would I, Kazama, have to bow my head down towards those guys? This topic is over, I'm leaving.
---end---
if the names of the swords are wrong... that's because I couldn't rememeber them and wasn't sure if what I found to be correct.

Hakuoki Travel Guide "Mount Tennōzan"
This content comes from the games... I forget which one it was on the vita. To my recollection, there are locations on maps related to the Shinsengumi and clicking on certain areas gets you some character commentary about the location. There's also a section where you can look at the Shinsengumi captains' rooms too... I've taken to labelling these as "Travel Guide" content because it sorta fit, and I don't have the actual name.
Anyway, I only have two of these saved, and since I could actually translate them both in a day, I decided to post them... as I couldn't work on that last drama CD of the set I was last working on previously since my brother is visiting. Those particular dramas take a while to translate, and I typically spend more than a day working on those.
Enjoy!
Hakuoki Travel Guide "Mount Tennōzan" (天王山)
Translation by KumoriYami
Shiranui: Mount Tennōzan. Thanks for helping the Choshu who escaped during the Kinmon incident/Hamaguri Gate Rebellion.
Kazama: It was merely a coincidence, those guys knew that they were at the end of their ropes.
Kazama: But compared to them, the Shogunate is completely unfefined.
Amagiri: At that time, the Satsuma Domain, which we are affiliated with, was still in a position to attack the Choshu soldiers.
Amagiri: The Choshu must have resented the Satsuma.
Shiranui: Yeah, they hated them done to their very bones. Thanks to the Satsuma and Aizu, they became enemies of the Imperial Court.
Shiranui: Now they've formed the Satchō Alliance to overthrow the Shogunate together, humans are truly interesting.
Kazama: It's just that their interests happened to align when facing a common enemy.
Kazama: Betraying their comrades is a nothing out of the ordinary for humans.
Shiranui: That's not to say that it's always like that, but it really does that not happen.
Kaoru: Oh my, it seems that everyone is here, have I disturbed you?
Kazama: I didn't ask you to come here.
Kaoru: As the leader of the Western oni clans, such a response is truly hartless.
Kaoru: Seldom do the Tosa and Satsuma agree to an alliance, so please look after me in the future.
Kazama: Tosa? In my opinoin, they're just a hypocritical domain.
Amagiri: I heard that hte Lord of the Tosa Domain is highly trusted by the shogunate.
Kazama: Yet, the Tosa have secretly joined forces with Satsuma, which is aiming to use force to overthrow the shogunate. In the end, that's just how humans are.
Shiranui: A Satsuma-Tosa alliance? I thought the Tosa were just being smart about the situation and moving towards the side that held the advantage.
Kaoru: Oya, what's wrong with being smart about the situation?
Nagumo: The Tosa domain is doing its utmost to survive between the cracks.
Amagiri: The Nagumo family seems to be very active in assisting the Tosa Domain, may I ask what is the reason for this?
Kaoru: You, who are also cooperating with Satsuma and Choshu, are asking me such a question?
Kazama:...We are merely repaying an old debt, it would be ridiculous to call it assistance.
Nagumo: The Nagumo family is the same, we're just repaying the favour of shelter with a little help.
Kazama: I don't know what kind of trick you're playing, but if you get in my way, I'll show no mercy.
Kaoru: This... it appears that I am truly despised.
Kaoru: Today just to greet everyone who had gathered here.
Kaoru: Then, I'll be leaving first.
Shiranui:...Has the Tosa, which had been biding their time/holding back, finally taking action/making their move?
Amagiri: However, it remains to be seen if they've truly join the anti-Shogunate faction.
Kazama: It's true that they've joined it. Humans has joined. Human beings will ultimately choose profit/what benefits them, and the Tosa are not an exception.
Kazama: From this point on, whether it's the domains or people, they will all distance themselves from the Shogunate, until the Shogunate ends up being completely isolated and collapses.
Kazama: If there are still people who would willingly follow them until the end… I would really like to meet such a fool.

Anyone interested in joining a split for Hakumyu Toudou Heisuke-hen? If you are, let me know.
I confess, I don't have a real interest in the show (it's heisuke, okay? he's like bottom 3 of the routes for me), so I'm asking this more on behalf of other people instead of as a participant (also I'd need Shogo to be in that route for me to watch it... probably).
P.S. I should be able to translate this week since the CAD I'm working on is almost doneeeee!

(busy with work again) but i felt the need to reblog this since i do write and know that some of my followers do too.
Used the tool in this mentioned, and it appears that some of my works have been scraped unfortunately... I suppose it's better that I've privated all my ao3 content now.
Alright! Sorry for being so absent today! I was building a tool so you can all check your own names on demand.
I am asking that you not talk about it on Hugging Face. I'm sure word will get there eventually, but I'd like to avoid them accessing this as much as possible. Feel absolutely free to spread around Tumblr.
AO3 search tool is here! Use page 1 to search scraped fics by username. Use page 2 to search by work ID (which you'll need to do if you're looking for an anonymous work).
Or you can use this version, which is strongly recommended if you've published more than about 20 fics on the username you're searching.
If you're unsure which to use:
The first link is better if your entire username is a common word. For example, if you're username is just "bread" then you probably can't search yourself in the second link. The first version is way slower, so I recommend trying the second link first and using the first link as a backup option if the second fails.
The first link contains a page to search by work ID. This is good if you have an anonymous or orphaned fic, since that's not going to appear by searching your username.
The second link is better if you have a LOT of fics. It will give you a count of fics so you don't have to add them up. It will show the top 2,000 work results found.
If you have more than 2,000 published works, first off, I am jealous of your motivation. But second, that won't display right on the public version of the tools. You can send an ask or DM to have me do a custom search for you if you have more than 2,000 total works under 1 username.
You can also ask or DM if your entire username is a common word, because you're likely to get drowned out of the search results in that case. Try the tool first, but if it returns a lot of author results for your search, and YOUR name isn't in the results, ask me! There's a decent chance you're in there, but one of the tool's weak points is searching extremely common words.
In case this post breaches containment: this is a tool that only has access to the work IDs, titles, author names, chapter counts, and hit counts of the scraped fics for this most recent scrape discovered in April 2025. There is no other work data in this tool. This never had the content of your works loaded to it, only info to help you check if your works were scraped. If you need additional metadata, I can search my offline copy for you if you share a work ID number and tell me what data you're looking for. I will never search the full work text for anyone, but I can check things like word counts and tags.
Please come yell if the tool stops working, and I'll fix as fast as I can. Version 1 is slow as hell, but it does load eventually. Give it up to 10 minutes, and if it seems down after that, please alert me via ask! Anons are on if you're shy. Version 2 typically loads results within 1 minute and handles most users well.
On mobile, enable screen rotation and turn your phone sideways. It's a litttttle easier to use like that. It works better if you can use desktop.
Some FAQs below the cut:
"What do I need to do now?": At this time, the main place where this dataset was shared is disabled. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to do anything, but I'll update if I hear otherwise. If you're worried about getting scraped again, locking your fics to users only is NOT a guarantee, but it's a little extra protection. There are methods that can protect you more, but those will come at a cost of hiding your works from more potential readers as well.
"I don't want to know!": This tool is 100% optional. If you don't want to know, simply don't click the link. You are totally welcome to block me if it makes you feel more comfortable.
"Can I see the exact content they scraped?": Nope, not through me. I don't have the time to vet every single person to make sure they are who they say they are, and I don't want to risk giving a scraped copy of your fic to anyone else. If you really want to see this, you can find the info out there still and look it up yourself, but I can't be the one to do it for you.
"Are locked fics safe?": Not safe, but so far, it appears that locked fics were scraped less often than public fics. The only fics I haven't seen scraped as of right now are fics in unrevealed collections, which even logged-in users can't view without permission from the owner.
"My work wasn't a fic. It was an image/video/podfic.": You're safe! All the scrape got was stuff like the tags you used and your title and author name. The work content itself is a blank gap.
"It's slow.": Unfortunately, a 13 million row data dashboard is always going to be on the slow side. I think I've done everything I can to speed it up, but it may still take up to 10 minutes to load. It's faster if you can use desktop, but it should work on your phone too.
"My fic isn't there.": If it was published after March 15th, 2025, that was likely after all of the scraping took place. Otherwise, from what I can tell so far, the scraper's code just... wasn't very good, so most likely, your fic was missed by random chance. I am continuing to look for methods to reduce the chances of a work getting scraped anyway, and I will share on this blog if/when I find something that works.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the cost to host the tool! I appreciate you so so so much. As of this edit, I've received more donations than what I paid to make this tool so you do NOT need to keep sending money. (But I super appreciate everyone who did help fund this! I just wanna make sure we all know it's all paid for now.)
(Made some quick edits to the post on 04-May-2025 to update information a bit!)

Guess who's busy with work again because of that same deliverable? 😅
Things changed so I had to do a lot more work on it since the presenter changed... though it's due Friday so I hope I'll be able to stop focusing on work this weekend and translate something.
Anyway, here's my only political post of the year: Woooh Carney won!

You had an otomedream account, at some point? Is it acceptable if I (as a foreigner) apply to join?
I mainly just want a patch that’s hosted literally only there (the website originally hosting it died like 10 years ago) but I don’t want to disturb the peace as Americans often do.
Hi, I still have an otomedream account. In regards to their rules, it's fine if a foreigner signs up (i mean I am), though you'll probably have difficulties getting in just by applying.

Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Hijikata and Kazama」
Finally have time to work on translating 🤣! I hope work won't be too busy for a while now that things have settled down... at least until July. It'd be then since a lot of collateral being made now is supposed to be used for a company event then... so I'll hopefully be able to start translating more regularly.
My matters aside, I would like to ask people to please consider supporting Kotowari (@koto-wari), as she has a kofi-page here. Koto has been actively contributing to what Hakuoki content there is now available in English, and has previously translated Hakuoki game content, Hakumyu cast interviews, and some of the Hakumyu musicals among other things. She also helped me with the HAKU-MYU LIVE extras English subtitles!
Anyway, since Koto's favourite route is Hakuoki, I decided to translate this drama cd to go with what I'd be writing to promote her page since a lot of her content does have Hijikata in it.
Enjoy~!
Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Hijikata and Kazama」
Translation by KumoriYami
Hijikata: The Shinsengumi, the organization responsible for the security in Kyoto, heard about another dangerous rumour today. According to the person responsible from the Watch, Choshu ronin are planning another stupid activity.
The best place for secret conversations, of course, is within the alleys of the city.
To catch them, I, Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizou, have come to Sumiya in Shimabara.
For this mission, it would be too conspicuous to bring many people.
If we were to move as a group, I'd like to bring Saito and Yamazki, but it'd be a bit difficult to do that this time.
There are reports that Yukimura Kodo may be among the enemy, and he is necessary to the Shinsengumi.
So, to confirm if it's really him, I brought Kodo-san's daughter Chizuru with me.
That's how the two of us ended up alone in a room at Sumiya, when there suddenly was the sound of the door to the room opening.
-----
(door slides open)
Kazama: Hmph, in this time of turmoil, as you're still able to relax and come here and drink, it seems that you're really living a carefree life, dog of the Shogunate!
Hijikata: You... Kazama! Why have you come in without permission!
Kazama: Think nothing of it, I simply thought that voice I heard sounded familiar. That female oni will definitely become my wife in the future, and it must be fate that I met you here tonight.
Hijikata: No one asked you to come in! This room is meant for her and myself! Don't just go spouting nonsense, and get lost!
Kazama: You're just an insignificant human. How dare you use that tone to speak to me?
Hijikata: So what's this about? Are you going to tell us about the inner workings of the Satsuma? Anyway, the purpose of your visit to Sumiya should be to protect someone important. If not, it's to spy on an enemy.
Kazama: How stupid. Do you believe that I'll reveal my hand so easily?
Hijikata: If not, then as I said before, this isn't your business, so get out!
Kazama: Hmph, what a truly impatient man. I have nothing to say to you. But, how about it, female oni. If you pour me a drink, perhaps I'll tell you something.
HIjikata: What?
Kazama: I think you truly are pitiful, having been imprisoned in the lair of these crude and vulgar humans.
Hijikata: I'm sorry that we're such a vulgar group!
Kazama: And they've forced you to dress up as a man! If you dressed up, you'd obviously be an extremely beautiful woman.
Hijikata: Hey! When you're surrounded by men, wearing women's clothing would only be asking for trouble.
Kazama: It'd be a shame for you if this continues, so come with me.
Hijikata: Hey, don't listen to Kazama's words. His stupidity is contagious.
Kazama: What? What you saying is idiotic. You don't even have the ability to protect a woman, wheras I'm different in that respect. I will not allow the woman destined to be my wife suffered any inconvenience.
Hijikata: Wife? You're actually saying that. You're only thinking about how to use her.
Kazama: Say whatever you want, you humans won't understand the way the way we oni display our love to women.
Hijikata: Display love? Hah. You're not going to get rattled, are you? Don't be fooled, he's just talking nonsense.
Kazama: How about it, female oni? If you come with me, first of all, I will allow you to eat your favourite dishes. It would be delicious food that the poor Shinsengumi would never be able to eat, which you would be able to enjoy to your heart's content.
Hijikata: Wha! You bastard! That's so mean!
Kazama: Blame yourselves for not having the means.
HIjikata: Kh! I'm sorry, we've always been destitute.
Kazama: It's up to you if you want to suffer, but do not involve my wife.
Hijikata: That guy isn't your wife!
Kazama: It's only a matter of time.
Hijikata:....Hey, you're a member of the Shinsengumi, right? So you should be aware of your position. If you eat too extravagantly, you will get punished by the heavens!
Kazama: What punishment by the heavens is there to be scared of. Ah, why don't a prepare a kimono for you too.
Hijikata: A kimono? You're saying that so easily, how would you get the money for that?
Kazama: Have you forgotten? I am the leader of the western oni clans. In addition to the compensation from the Satsuma, there are also some hidden assets...
Hijikata: Aahh! I'm really sorry about that! We're just peasants from Tama!
Kazama: How about getting a colourful one that suits you? You won't need to continue pretending to be a man. Don't you want to quickly grasp the happiness of being a woman?
Hijikata: What happiness of being a woman? She doesn't need to wear women's clothes to be enough...
Kazama: Enough... for what?
HIjikata:....Never mind. Anyway, unless you candidly explain things, he'll keep pestering you. Just hurry up and say it clearly. Tell him that you have no obligation to go with him.
Kazama: Hah! Yet you're the one directing her. Alright, female oni, choose me.
Hijikata: What? Even if we say that, you feel troubled?
Kazama: Does that mean you can't make a choice?
HIjikata: I'm telling you, there's no need to be polite to this guy.
Kazama: That's what I wanted to say. Could it be that you still have feelings for the Shinsengumi? Then I have an idea.
(draws blade)
Hijikata: Heh. Drawing your katana at a banquet. There should be a limit to how tactless you are.
Kazama: It's because you aren't listening. Is this truly fine, female oni. If you don't listen to me now, I'll chop off this man's head right here and now.
Hijikata: How would you be able to kill me.
Kazama: Allow me to to demonstrate the difference between humans and oni to you.
(draws sword)
Hijikata: Hmph!
Kazama: There is no way a mere human could possibly defeat me, the leader of the oni clans.
HIjikata: How would you know that if you don't try? I don't know how good your arms are, but my swordsmanship is much better than yours!
Kazama: Stop pretending.
Hijikata: Speaking of which, is it okay for you to cause a commotion here? Didn't you come here for work?
Kazama: Your human politics has nothing to do with me. Although I'm helping out a little bit, that means nothing compared to this. Obtaining the female oni is far more important than that.
HIjikata: What a troublesome bastard you are. If you were a member of the Shinsengumi, you would have been ordered to commit seppuku for disobeying orders!
Kazama: Do not apply the common sense of the Mibu wolves to me. But, it's not like I can let you go now. Just run away with your tail between your legs. Of course, leave this girl to me.
Hijikata: I refuse, you won't be getting away from me. Whether it's me letting you go, or turning my back to the enemy or leaving her alone, I can't do any of that!
Kazama: As expected, you aren't the slightest bit sensible.
Hijikata: You're wrong! This is called fulfilling the mission! (tightens grasp on hilt) Listen carefully, just hide behind me. Don't think about anything unecessary. Tch.... what's with the expression on your face?
Kazama: What's wrong, why do you look like you're about to cry?
Hijikata: Do you really think I'll lose if we fight? Heh, you don't need to worry. Believe in me!
Kazama: Believe in you? Hmph, you have never recognized that girl as one of your comrades, and it's only at a critical time you'd say such nice things.
HIjikata: Ah, it's true that we haven't acknowledged her as one of our comrades.
Kazama: My wife, did you hear that? Indeed, oni can only live together with other oni.
Hijikata: I've already said that she's not your wife! This guy isn't one of our comrades, and is an oni, but so what?
Kazama: What?
HIjikata: Listen, we decided to protect her. Regardless of what kind of blood runs through her body, her background isn't a reason why her fate should be manipulated, so we'll protect her from those kinds of people [I guess?].
Kazama: That girl will be happier if she's with me. Why can't you understand that.
Hijikata: We have a responsibility! We pulled her into this, and she's had her freedom restricted in the name of justice, but even so, this woman has worked hard for us without complaning. As warrors, how could we just abandon her?!
Kazama: Girl, can you believe a man like this? That is what a country samurai would say.
Hijikata: Listen, don't worry. I will definitely defeat Kazama, and bring you safely back to headquarters without fail. Just calmly wait and watch from there. Right, the Shinsengumi is where you belong, so you have nothing to worry about.
Kazama: Hey, why are your eyes tearing up? Were you moved by what he just said? If the situation changes, this man Hijikata will kill you at any time.
HIjikata: Shut up! Isn't it the same for you! If she didn't have the bloodline of the oni, you'd lose interest in her.
Kazama: Hmph... but it's impossible to lose your bloodline. That assumption is meaningless. [not really... hahaha]
HIjikata: No matter what you say, even if we can't resist the tides of change, we're still going to protect her! Regardless of who the opponent is, I will never back down!
Kazama: Hmph...
(sheathes blade)
Kazama: How boring. Since you've ruined my mood, I'm leaving.
Hijikata: Then hurry up... hey! Why are you calling him?
Kazama: Oh? You still want to come with me? What? You'll pour me sake if I tell you about the Satsuma?
HIjikata: Haha, that's right, you said that at the beginning.
Kazama: Why do I need to drink while facing a Mibu wolf.
Hijikata: It's not like I want to do this either. But if you provide information on the Satsuma like you said, it's not like I can't bear it.
Kazama: Refusing will only make the sake taste bad. What? You're saying a man shouldn't be like that?
Hijikata: Hey, we've already given up! If you don't accept this, wouldn't that damage the dignity of the oni clans?
Kazama: Hm.... I won't betray the Satsuma, but I can reveal a bit of insider information on the Choshu. Furthermore, the money for the sake must be billed to the Shinsengumi. Those are my conditions.
Hijikata: Tch... Fine, let's do it that way.
...
Hijikata: In the end, Kodo-san and the Choshu didn't show up. But beause we brought her along, we got some valuable information from Kazama.
With this, it's only a matter of time before we catch those unscrupulous ronin. It was quite strange to be in the face of Kazama as she poured sake for us.
Well the results weren't bad though.
Hmph.
Maybe.

*ahem* i would like to follow-up to the note at I put at the start of this post by saying that I still think Saito is the best. hehehe.😜
p.s. if you're a translator looking for a boost for a monetization platform, feel free to reach out to me, though I'll need to be under the impression that you haven't only done a on-off translation contribution to Hakuoki (unless it was something for a Hakumyu musical).
(also im going to get to my messages later today)

heya, sorry I haven't posted at all this month but I've been swamped with work. Need to have materials for a presentation ready this week (thankfully it's almost done), and I have a tech note on NVIDIA's GTC keynote that's due tomorrow.
Hopefully on Wednesday I'll be able to catch up with messages and finally finish the translation I'm working on then, but if not, I'll definitely be available on Friday to do stuff.
Sorry!

Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Toudou and Harada」
Here's a translation of another of those DS CD dramas...2/4 for January. I should really go looking for short content after... since I go for quantity instead of length for posts. 😂
Also I got lucky and managed to buy a ticket for Tennocon! That's in July so I'm sure as hell not going to be translating that week. Sorta debating about spending an extra day in London (ON, not UK🤣) though when I go since do have co-workers there that I've only seen online, even if that might result in a higher hotel cost...
Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Toudou and Harada」
Translation by KumoriYami:
Toudou: Ah… if things were normal, I'd be drinking and having fun at Shimbara with Shinpat-san now… Damn it, Hijikata-san really is too much. It was just a small mistake, breaking the shoji door, then he just says that I'm not allowed out. It's rare for me to be off duty at night, but isn't it to much that I have to stay at headquarters the entire time? Speaking of which, what's Chizuru doing? Let's go see… For example, when Shinpachi was training last time and broke the shoji door in the dojo last time, he didn't say anything and pushed the blame onto me before running away!
(goes over to Chizuru's room)
Harada: No, no, that was Shinpachi's fault...
Toudou: That's odd? Why is Sano-san's voice here? Did he come to speak to Chizuru too?
(opens door)
Toudou: Sano-san, what are you doing in Chizuru's room?
Harada: Oh, if it isn't Heisuke. Fu, I just got back from patrol and didn't feel like going to sleep like this so I thought I'd come here to chat to pass the time.
Toudou: Seriously...?
Harada: Come to think of it/Speaking of which, you were banned from going outside today, right? What stupid think did you do this time?
Toudou: It wasn't a big deal...
Harada: What wasn't a big deal... I'm concerned about it so tell me.
Toudou: Shut up... leave me alone!
Harada: Why are you getting upset? You're making things difficult for Chizuru.
Toudou: Eh... uh... I wasn't yelling at you just now. It's just... well how do I put this... Litsn to me Chizuru! Hijikata-san seriously is too much! Just because I accidently broke a shoji door, he kept on lecturing me, saying that I was forbidden from going outside!
Harada: That really is unfortunate. Then I'll do something for you. I'll go bring some sake. Are you going to want to drink?
(Harada goes to get drinks)
Harada: Here, I've brought it.
(pours drinks)
Harada: Drink it.
Toudou: Oh, thank you.... Ah, delicious! Chizuru, you don't want to drink? Oh, is that so. You're not good at holding your drink. Huh? Why am I so upset? It's because Hijikata-san's behavious is so unreasonable. It's so frustrating, why am I the only one getting scolded by Hijikata-san! However even if it's useless to say anything to Shinpachi, this is something that Hijikata-san should know about. Sano-san is smart so he rarely gets scolded.
Harada: That's because you and Shinpachi make mistakes but since you always try to avoid taking responsibility, you get lectured more. If you had told the truth earlier when you broke the shoji, Hijikata-san wouldn't have been so upset.
Toudou: That's not the case! I'm the easiest one to scold so he always picks on me! I can't think of another reason! Besides, HIjikata-san is always nagging us about minor details, it's so annoying. Saying that we have set an example to the new members…
Harada: Hey, hey, you shouldn't be saying that in front of Chizuru...
Toudou: What is it, Chizuru… is it that you don't want to listen to me...? That's right, there's no way you wouldn't want to listen. Heisuke has started to complain… Chizuru, although it might be a hassle, please be patient and listen to him complain. I'll make it up to you later. Sorry bout this. Hm? It's no trouble at all? You… I don't know if I should say that you're seriously too nice or something… No, I'm not saying anything bad about you, and am complimenting you. Regardless of whomever faces you, no matter how evil/vicious they are, they'll probably lose their momentum..
Toudou: Hey~ Chizuru... why are you only listening to Sano-san... Listen to what I say too!
Harada: Hey, can't you tell when she's feeling annoyed? She's too kind and won't complain about anything.
Toudou: Is that true, Chizuru? If it's really like what Sano-sani said, and you don't want to listen to me, I'll head back to my room by myself.... Oh, you're happy to listen to me, and don't mind? R-Really? Thank you, Chizuru. You really are so kind.
Harada: Oi, Chizuru, you're being too lenient with Heisuke. If you keep smiling and nodding to him like this, he'll keep on taking advantage of your generosity. Isn't it necessary to be strict with him and leave him alone sometimes?
Toudou: What, if you don't want to listen to me, Sano-san, why don't you go back to your room? I want to continue talking with Chizuru.
Harada: What nonsense are you saying? How can I just leave Chizuru alone with you? It's too dangerous.
Toudou: What do you mean by dangerous! I'm harlmless/safe, right Chizuru? Look, she also says that I'm harmless.
Harada: That's why I said that you're always nodding along… your so nice that it's annoying. I'm going to have a drink too.
(sometime after Sano drinks...)
Toudou: Sano-san, do you still want to/is he still going to keep drinking? If Sano-san gets drunk, he might end up talking about how he committed seppuku again. It might be better for you to leave now. I'll look after Sano-san. You'd feel bad about leaving me alone? No, if you're worried about me, of course I'll be happy, but this is Sano-san…
Harada: Hey! What are you two mumbling about?
Toudou: Uh, Sano-san... that gaze...
Harada: Chizuru, come over here! I have a lot of things to say to you. How should I put this. Being kind to everyone isn't a bad thing, but there has to be a limit for everything! You haven't experienced how cruel society can be, so you might not know] how there are bad men in this world who will take advantage of women's kindness, and deceive and exploit them!
Toudou: What's wrong, you're starting a lecture now? This is why I don't like oji-sans. Chizuru, why don't you go now? It's pointless to continue listening to Sano-san.
Harada: Oi, where are you trying to take Chizuru? I wasn't done talking yet. Okay, sit over here. Today, I'll tell you a story that will benefit you greatly. Speaking of which, when I started to think about a way for men to survive back when I was still in Iyo…
Toudou: Hah... it's started again... Let's go, Chizuru. You've must be tired from hearing the story about how ano-san commit seppuku countless times. Hah? That's not the case? You're not forcing yourself? Even at Shiekan, none of us seriously listened to Sano-san's story. Um... you're really not forcing yourself? You're actually happy listening to Sano-san talk… Chizuru, regardless of what you say...
Harada: Look, isn't Chizuru saying that she wants to listen to me? A story that you can learn something from is a good story, regardless of how many times you hear it. First, I need to start with my hometown in the Iyo Domain...
Toudou: Uah... Chizuru is actualy listening to that guy with a smile on her face… She truly is a nice perosn. It seems that Chizuru really is able to make anyone lose their momentum. In a sense, she's probably the strongest.

Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Saito and Nagakura」
There are four of these related DS bonus CDs... here's the one of four things to make up for January's content. I'll probably translate the rest of them to make up for the month's posts.
A day later than I intended... and then some since I was dealing with some last minute transactions cuz of that the tempermental toddler's tarrifs on everything Canadian. 😅 I would much rather those tariffs went through so that people can experience firsthand how they affect prices south of the border, and so that Canada seriously examines what it can do about the existing trade barriers within the country.
(Also I had a hard time with the translation itself because of the foods and phrases mentioned that I didn't know about.)
Hakuoki DS Store Bonus CD 「Carrot and Stick: In the Case of Saito and Nagakura」
Translation by KumoriYami
Nagakura: Hey, Chizuru-chan, there you are. What are you doing? Ah... I see, thee corridor's been cleaned up so you're heading back to your room? Then do you don't have any other plans? Do you want to head out with me? C'mon, hurry up and get ready.
Ready to go? Let's go then.
Saito: Shinpachi, where are you taking Yukimura?
Nagakura: Where to? I'm not on duty today, so I want to treat Chizuru-chan to some dessert~
Saito: Dessert? If you have time to waste money, you're better off doing kenjutsu training with your troops.
Nagakura: What a serious pain. I don't have time to listen to your nitpicking when I'm not on duty. Come on, let's go, Chizuru-chan.
Saito: Wait, I wasn't finished speaking yet.
Nagakura: What, why are you following me. If you like kenjutsu training so much, why don't you practise however much you want~
Saito: I said that I wasn't finished speaking. You've never been aware of your position as a Shinsengumi executive…
Nagakura: Seriously... you followed me all the way to the shop..
Saito: Is there something wrong with me sitting at the same table?
Nagakura: No… though I generally feel that I need to watch myself. With you, only the heavens know when you'll start preaching again, so I feel that my mind is always tense… Hey, forget it. I have to think about what to order first. Just order whatever you want. Chizuru-chan is my precious little sister. Sine this is a rare trip, why don't you order a big bow of chestnuts?
Saito: Wait, Shinpachi. Wait, Shinpachi. I've heard that this is one of the most expensive restaurants in Kyoto. Since things will be more costly, it would be better to not be too excessive with ordering...
Nagakura: What are you saying now! How much do you think I'm able to earn now? I don't care if this is the most famous place in Kyoto or not, I'm not going to go broke by buying a bowl or two bowls of zenai.
Saito:...Shinpachi, have you forgotten the time at Shikeikan, when you/we [no pronoun here] couldn’t afford three meals a day?
Nagakura: I haven't forgotten. Isn't it heartening that we, who used live hard lives, can now sit in an expensive restaurant like this and eat delicious zenzai like this?
Saito: That’s not what I’m talking about. What I mean to say is that even if you have plenty of money, you you should try to avoid squandering it.
Nagakura: Even if you say that... I've already ordered. Ah, the zenai seems to have arrived, I'll hurry up and try it... Delicious..!! Chizuru-chan, try it! I've never eaten anything so delicious!
Saito: Yukimura, you should understand what I'm saying. Spending money tlike this will only incite the people of Kyoto ostracize you. Put down your chopsticks.
Nagakura: What, stop talking nonsense. It'd be a waste to leave out the food ordered. The mottainai ghost* will come out!
Saito: How much do you think this bowl of zenzai could have bought? When they were still in Edo, who knows how much Kondou-san and Hijikata-san suffered while trying to make a living for tomorrow. Nowadays, it's natural to be happy about not needing to worry about food, but the things that have happened must not be forgotten.
Nagakura: So people born into poor families will be poor for their entire lives?! I'm not using stolen money to enjoy myself. What's wrong with using the money you earn to eat what you want?! Chizuru-chan, don't pay attention to what Saito says, h's just trying to be good with money and lecture me.
Since this a rare opportunity, how about ordering some kuzukiri with lots of black honey? Okay, okay, you're welcome. Nee-chan, another serving of kuzukiri, mitachi dango, and zenzai with lots of shiratama dango!
Saito: I told you not to be so excessive! Regardless of what is said to Shinpachi, it won't work will it…? Yukimura, no matter what is served, don't pick up your chopsticks.
Nagakura: Aah, here it comes! Chizur-chan, look this stretchy [check word later] kuzukiri is covered with lots of black honey. There's a lot of sweet soy sauce on the mitarashi dango. Delicious… the dango from the sweets shops outside can't compare! What on earth is this sauce? Come on, try it, Chizuru-chan. It's so delicious!
Saito: Yukimura, I told you not to pick up your chopsticks. Have you ever heard the saying "A samurai will use a toothpick even though he has not eaten."**?
(Chizuru puts down her chopsticks)
Yes, that's right. It seems you that you are very understanding.
Nagakura: What, You're not going to eat even though I ordered this? I just wanted to make Chizuru-chan happy…
Is that so... if you don't want to eat, just forget it. I can eat it myself.
Why... forget Saito... even Chizuru-chan...
Saito: Don't worry about what Shinpachi said. This will serve as a good medicine to him. If you are too kind to him now, Shinpachi will never understand his mistakes. not realize his fault. Your judgment is correct.
Nagakura: I asked Chizuru-chan to come here to cheer her up since she was depressed because she hasn't been able to find her father. I didn't even think of asking her to thank me. My good intentions were misinterpreted like this. To be honest, this is seriously annoying. Although I know that Chizuru-chan is very gentle, you don't need to respond to everything that Saito complains about.
Saito: Speaking of which, Yukimura. You know a bit about kenjutsu, right? So after we return to headquarters, why don't you watch the troops practising kenjutsu with me?
Hm? You're asking if it's okay for us to watch together?
It won't be an problem, I'll explain it to the other members.
It's not useless for you to know how to use kenjutsu to protect yourself.
Nagakura: Aahh~ do whatever you want! If you think that Saito was right, then just be good to him for the rest of your life! I won't invite you out again!
Ah... bastard... I'm so pissed...! I'll just order another bowl of zenzai! Since Chizuru-chan won't eat, I'll eat by myself!
Saito: Then we'll return to headquarters.
Hm? You're asking what Shinpachi will do?
Just leave him be. It's best to give him time to reflect on himself.
What? You're saying that leaving Shinpachi behind will make you feel worried since it was rare for him to invite you out?
Yukimura, Shinpachi invited you without permission. You don't need to feel guilty. Understand?
Then let's go...
You're saying that even so, you'd feel bad about leaving Nagakura-san here, so you'll accept his kindness today?
You're too lenient with him. It's because of your attitude that Shinpachi has never been able to realize his own mistakes. Nagakura: That's great! I knew Chizuru-chan would say that! Nee-chan, another serving of zenzai! Put in more chestnuts and shiratama dango!
Saito, you can go back now, don't you have to return to headquarters to practise kenjutsu?
Saito: What are you talking about? I don't know what you will say to Yukimura, so how can I leave by myself. I will allow you to treat me to a bowl of zenzai.
Nagakura: What! I said I wanted to treat Chizuru-chan, but I didn't say that I wanted to treat you!
Saito: Miss, please get me a bowl of zenai.
Nagakura: I said that I'm not treating you!
Saito: Give me a serving of kuzukiri with black honey, agar, abe kawamochi… [im never sure about food items 😅]
Nagakura: Listen to what other people are saying!!!
----------------
*the tl notes here said that there was a waste monster that would show up if food was left so I'm assuming that this was referring to the "Mottainai Ghost"? I'll fix it if I listen to the audio... pulled the inforrmation from: https://www.japanlivingguide.com/expatinfo/japaneseculture/mottainai/#:~:text=Back%20then%2C%20children%20were%20told,reflects%20the%20Japanese%20Mottainai%20Spirit.
**took the first half of the quote from https://www.azquotes.com/quote/544377 since this was the only saying that fit the context of what I was reading.

I'm alive! (sorry for no updates)
heya all.
first, happy Chinese new year. I'm Chinese so i'll start with that.
second, sorry I haven't posted anything for a while 😅. Have actually been busy this month trying to do research on generative AI's impact on another topic since I was asked about potentially writing an actual book so a lot of my time's been focused on that this month.
Even though that is the case... I do plan on on trying to translate next month. Not sure if I'll be able to rush through something in 2 days, but I'm going to try... though it should be fine to push myself since I'm seeing family for the new year this Saturday and it's unlikely I'll be doing anything else on Sunday so I will at a minimum get something done by then. 🤣
So... Sorry~!! I'd be more sincere with an actual apology if I felt worse about totally skipping out on updates if they didn't concern my translations if not for the fact I FUCKING HATE TRANSLATING 😂, or how I do genuinely want to write a book, even if it's not on a topic I already knew that I wanted to write about.
Going to go through my messages now, and I'll see what I can do about making up for January's postings (total of four!).
YAISA!

forgot to post here but happy new year everyone! hope that everyone has a good new year and are enjoying themselves over the holidays... also i never got around to working on the HIjikata-hen extras (again) cuz of Warframe 1999 this time 😂 (I'm a gamer at heart, and I also hate translating okay?).
Still, I do plan to work on that during 2025, hopefully before I go deciding what to translate though I'll be putting out less in January since CNY also falls on January 29, 2025.
Anyway, happy new year and I hope that people will continue supporting Hakuoki in 2025 as well.
😊
