My dad, Charles Kurman. I want to express my extreme gratitude and love for my dad who was the most amazing and compassionate man. His life wasn't easy but you wouldn't know it. He never knew his birth mother, was born in Oshkosh and moved to Pittsburgh by his dad when he was two. His father remarried and left the family when my dad was six. He had a terrific stepmother and enjoyed a good live as a young man. He was even a marble shooting champion in Pittsburgh in the 30s. He and my mother were crazy in love. She was a dynamo who dad said lit up every room she entered. Before I was born, dad was in a headon collision with a semi while communting to his mens clothing store in Jeannette PA. He were on the way to the morgue when they detected a heartbeat. He was on a coma for months and when he awoke, he had no memory of my mother. He relearned everything and life resumed without any physical evidence of the accident. Life was good for the young family in the small western Pennsylvania town. At least until a rainy day in July 1968. My mother suffered a fatal heart attack at age 44. Her tragic, sudden death was a huge heartbreak for all of us but dad tried to fill her shoes and raised me and my brother. He was depressed and cried himself to sleep. My brother was traumatized and became schizophrenic. I did all I could to hold the family together and stay sane. When dad found love again eight years later, it was a welcomed relief, a blessing. I was thrilled seeing him begin to live again. Celia was different than my mother but perfect for him and they enjoyed a loving long life together. I learned so much from my father. Love, compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, passion, and survival to name a few. While not an easy life, it was a full life with love well lived. I will always be thankful that he was my dad.
