A character analysis of Childe from Genshin Impact, the games most illustrious character.
Let’s march on.
Childe (or Ajax) is a pretty well known character on his own, some may know him without even having played the game which leads to some comparisons such as Roxas from Kingdom Hearts and Sylvain from Fire Emblem Three Houses.
We tend to associate characters with other characters that we already know but I feel as if these comparisons aren’t fair to Childe and his character story.
The little we actually know or see from him in the beginning is quite misleading and if you take everything at face value you wont be able to understand the truth of his character.
Though upfront Childe can seem very charming, he truly is someone who lives for praise and it can be seen in his character stories and story quest.
Childe has never outgrown his childhood phase due to the fact that he never had one past age 14. Falling into the abyss was one of the worst things to happen to him but in his and to The Fatui it was the greatest.
No one, not even Childe himself, understand the true effects that the abyss had on him.
Childe loves to push himself past his limits, as seen in his story quest, and he doesn’t know when to quit nor does he want to. Foul Legacy is something that he feels like he earned and he did. The only reason he pushes himself so hard is for the safety of those he cares for or to prove a point.
He cares only for his family or for the Tsaritsa and her plans. Childe does not care for himself because in the abyss he had to keep moving and not worry about how he felt, more on making it out alive. He doesn’t having anything that truly makes him happy but fighting and his family, he does everything for them but more on his family later.
Though he’s escaped he will never truly feel safe and at home because of everything that he went through in the abyss.

He doesn’t care because if he dies then it just means he wasn’t good enough and that’s not possible because he’s the best at what he does. He needs to be the best at everything because it brings on the praise of others and he revels in it.
Though he was arrogant and unkind, his father sending him away did nothing but make it worse. Childe was excited by battle and it can be assumed that it is because everything he had fought in the abyss was 10x worse than what he had been seeing and fighting in once he got back.

Even if Childe had become a different man the love he had for his family never changed. He sends the money and letters, makes promises and intends to keep them even if he dies trying. Family truly is everything to Childe and he just wants them to be safe and sound. Though his ways of showing it are weird, such as his wish for his siblings to become warriors to protect themselves, he does care for his family in every way.
I feel as if when we get to Snezhnaya we’ll be able to get a better look into Childe and his silly little brain, as well as seeing the abyss and even fighting in it once we get there. The probabilities of another Childe rerun may be high for now.
Though, survival of the abyss is never guaranteed.
