When First Responders initially arrive on an emergency scene, they assess the site and summon various tactical teams/ specialized equipment as needed for any multifaceted assistance. California's nearly 38 million residents are located within our state's approximately 156 million square miles of extremely diverse terrain; Los Angeles County occupies over 2300 square miles with a population of over 4 million inhabitants.  Emergency response covers a phenomenal variety of specialization in unique California locales - from mountains to desert to ocean, from agriculture to skyscrapers, from air ambulances to water rescue, our public servants comprise an astonishing highly-trained group of special forces, dedicated to providing the best, fastest, most successful outcomes that are humanly possible.  Often these team members put themselves in harm's way as they perform their rescue duties.  Their selfless dedication to their craft saves lives and public/ private property faithfully, maintaining and restoring public safety and peace every single day - and night.  We count on them to protect us.  Rescue us.  Save our endangered lives when we cannot.  Cal OES (California Office of Emergency Preparedness) facilitates assignments of special response units, police officers, sheriff deputies, CHP state police, K-9 teams, Mounted Enforcement,  DWR, SHSP, CA National Guard, SWAT, Homeland Security, ATF, FBI, CIA, NSA, et cetera, addressing all-hazards activation, 24/7/365.

The burgeoning quantity of California drivers and speeding vehicles creates a shocking number of deadly crashes each year; these wrecks cause driving hazards that need to be removed promptly in order to prevent additional accidents on the blocked roadways.  A large diverse network of emergency responders from a variety of rescue agencies provides an impressive array of rescue services designed to keep drivers and roadways safe and secure.  However, the increasing number of crash incidents involving extraneous factors (using social media while driving, drug/ alcohol-related reaction impairments, and other contributing "distracted driver" incidents - in addition to excessive speed and reckless driving), continues to comprise tragically significant - preventable - safety hazards.  California reported over 3600 motor-vehicle deaths in 2018; the monetary cost of each fatality, according to the USDOT, exceeds $1.4 million in average discounted lifetime costs.  Medical costs alone for treating minor to catastrophic injuries caused by vehicular accidents on public streets and highways are astronomical.  Yet the horrific toll on injured and grieving families' broken hearts far surpasses dollars-and- cents impact.  Worse yet, motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death in Los Angeles County for children aged 5 to 14.

Firefighter graduation ceremonies run head-on into diverse fire suppression/emergency response scenes; our courageous firefighters' lifesaving skills are always at the ready, wielded from air, land & water-related sites.  HazMat teams respond to contain hazardous materials at emergency scenes, while U-SAR (Urban Search & Rescue) rigs are called to sites for use in rescuing trapped victims (e.g. earthquakes, aircraft/train/trench accidents, et cetera). The enormous Heavy Rescue specialized tow truck pulls apart crushed vehicles, tackles heavy lifting - including downed big rigs - frequently using the Jaws of Life to free trapped victims from hopelessly mangled wreckage.  The Air Operations Unit uses up to ten helicopters for air ambulance access and fire attack; several planes can also be dispatched to drop water or a vivid red chemical retardant used to suppress wildfires in primarily rural areas.  LAFD: "More than 85% of the Department's daily emergency responses are related to Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) which transport, on average, more than 500 people to local hospitals [via ambulance] every day."

From the coordinating personnel in Mobile Command Post rigs, to air and water-related support, to fire trucks (aerial ladder engines - called truck companies; "triples"- with fire hoses, water pumps & water tank carrier combinations; brush boxes - containing wildfire equipment), no emergency dilemma is insurmountable for our dedicated firefighters.  Each challenge is battled beyond visible flames - eliminating hidden volatile hotspots lurking under smoky ash and danger-laden debris until "knockdown" is achieved: all in/all done, smoky sweaty hours later.  These hundreds of daily incidents are often unreported beyond the extent of neighborhoods, yet the reality is significant: one more deadly dragon (fire) slain - one more hard-won victory captured.  Meanwhile, the exhausted yellow and reflective-tape-clad men & women retrieve their heavy hard-used equipment and return wearily to the station, awaiting the next alarm.

5.7.20 | 2:26 a.m. PDT| Santa Ana, CA 4-Alarm Fire Engulfs Santa Ana Church

A 4-Alarm fire eclipsed the Full Flower Moon night sky in Santa Ana early Thursday morning, leaving a vacant historic church fully destroyed. Over 100 firefighters and 25 Orange County Fire Authority units responded to the blaze in the 100 block of East Santa Ana Blvd, near Main, around 2:40 a.m.  Exterior defensive positions were employed for over 2 hours before it was determined a knockdown at 4:38 a.m.   

The building - listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historical Resources - was built in 1911 as a United Presbyterian Church.  Years later it housed Templo Calvario (1977-1985), followed by Orange County Pacific Symphony affiliation for a time. 

Another Santa Ana church fire two months ago - at an abandoned Methodist Church one block away - happened on March 31st; that church had suffered a previous fire in September 2019. * Link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkr2NGR8QJc     

Both structures had prior reports of homeless and other unauthorized occupants frequenting the vacated buildings.  

This third fire within the past seven months, in a one-block radius, raises the specter of potential serial arson. OCFA officials confirmed both structures were vacant at the time of all three fires, with no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters. The causes of the 5.7.2020 fire remain under investigation as to origin and cause.

3-Alarm Tustin Estate Fire A fire raged for hours in a large single-family Tustin residence estate early Wednesday morning, ultimately requiring 65 firefighters and 15 firetrucks to overcome the blaze.  The 3-alarm fire in the 3-story structure was vacant at the time; no injuries were reported.  OCFA-PIO Cpt. Greg Barta said the third alarm was requested after several hours of firefighters' overhaul due to the very large scale of the residence.  Fire investigators on the scene are conducting a cause and origin investigation.
