One sad side effect of big box stores is that you just don’t get lifelong hyper fixation guy access like you used to.

Like yeah I can go to Menards and buy a door.

But it used to be I could go to the door store, and speak to a man whose sole passion in life was doors and who would talk about the history of door insulation patterns over the last 50 years without stopping to breathe.

That man is gonna find me the BEST door option for me.

Seriously my neighborhood had one of these. They were across the street from the lighting shop owned by the guy who could tell you the exact date, off the top of his head, that your property got electrical wiring based on your address.

Now these guys rarely get to own a shop, make a good living, and sell the very finest doors for decades. They’re relegated to Reddit posts which are informative but ultimately do not replace door guy having a door shop.

I don’t want to talk to some miserable, underpaid 20 year old who was in plumbing last week and in doors this week and doesn’t know a hammer from a hanger.

I want my door guy back.

If nothing else, as a historian every time I get scared at the state of the world I have to remind myself that "uninteresting times" is a myth.

The world has always been in the throes of chaos and violence and fear, just in different ways and to different degrees. The anxieties of the past are no less real than our own, and we can learn from them. Normality and peace are fleeting, but we can always strive to increase those moments. We have to keep hoping and working for a better future. It's all we have. We may not succeed, but if we don't try, what are we living for?

Accounting is one of those systems that has existed in some form since the invention of writing so you can draw a line from a guy recording bushels of grain on clay tablets in Mesopotamia to me sitting in my room doing my excel homework.

If you’re despairing about this or that, a good way to overcome that feeling of political powerlessness is by doing something good in the real world. Volunteering or getting involved in some local org, even if it doesn’t seem “important” enough still matters. People have to have things like shelter, food, and medicine before they can do anything else like fight against fascism.

This is such a great idea. As someone who struggles with phone calls and the mental bandwidth of writing emails etc (i do it anyway but jfc), this is SO appealing to me. Its easy, its fun, and it gets a message across.

Might fuck around and make some of my own postcards too but in the meantime I just ordered like 10 of these!
