summary:
Chat Noir has been fighting Chrysalide alone for years when one day, Ladybug appears. She seems to already know him, and is a little too eager to be friends. But the more she pushes for her and Chat Noir to reveal their identities, the harder she is to trust.
Written for @ladynoirjuly Prompt 31 - “In Every Universe”
excerpt:
She was red from head to boot, spots as black as her hair decorating the material of her suit and dotting her mask like ink drops. She looked like she was dressed up as a watermelon for a children’s theater show, and when she pulled back to beam at him, it was with a grin of manic joy. “It’s me!” the girl said, laughing. “Ladybug!” Chat Noir gaped at her, too stunned to notice the approaching pulse of light bearing down from overhead. But then the girl—Ladybug—tackled him to the ground once more, and they rolled to safety behind a row of cars. When he looked up, the remains of the cobbled street where they’d been standing moments before were scorched black. “Do I know you?” Chat Noir asked, turning to look at her. Ladybug’s smile rapidly deflated.

Rating: Teens and Up (literally for one minor curse word but they wouldn’t allow the show to say it so. I guess it makes it a higher rating?)
Relationship: Ladynoir
What to expect: Fluff, Ladynoir July prompts 17. Roses, 25. In the Rain, and 26. Oh…oh.
Summary: Marinette was absolutely screwed. She’d tried to forget about how he’d looked when he took her hand to help her up. She’d tried to forget the way her heart skipped a beat and the way she couldn’t stop staring at him. She’d tried to forget whatever little flip her heart did when he pulled her into a hug. (The first time she remembered him pulling her into a hug and not the other way around.) She couldn’t do it. No matter what she did, she just… couldn’t. (OR: What if Marinette couldn’t stop thinking about Chat Noir after the s4 finale? What if she decided to do something about it?)
A/N: This was written for @ladynoirjuly
(continue reading here or on AO3!)
Marinette was freaking out. Sitting on her bed after the battle that lost all of the miraculous to Monarch, her mind was spinning. So much had happened in such a short amount of time. Two weeks later, her mind was still buzzing. She felt…a lot of things. Guilt for losing the kwamis, hurt from the betrayal of Felix, and confused about her feelings for her partner.
Marinette plopped back down onto her back and stared up at the ceiling. She’d said no more boys and no more romance. She’d promised herself not to do that again. But then Chat Noir was there for her, he picked her back up, not at all upset with her, and he reassured her that everything would be alright and… she couldn’t help it, her heart had skipped a beat.
She groaned, her hands dragging down her face as she felt her cheeks heat up again. She was able to go for most of their partnership without thinking about Chat Noir in a romantic manner. Any time she felt herself smile a little softer than normal, any time she felt affection for him expand in her chest, any time she couldn’t get his dorky little jokes out of her head — she’d shut down whatever she was feeling before it could develop into anything more than friendship. Marinette cherished her friendship with Chat Noir a lot, but sometimes it was hard not to fall for him when he’d look at her like she hung the stars in the sky.
And now? Marinette was absolutely screwed.
It didn’t help that they’d patrol on most days, waiting for Monarch to strike. She’d find herself staring for a little too long at the way the sun filtered through his hair at golden hour, find herself getting lost in his grin after some pun he’d made to lift her spirits. It wasn’t fair how pretty he was. It really, really wasn’t.
They were spending a lot more time together not fighting. Usually the time they spent together was battling an akuma and some brief patrols. But now, they were playing cards together, cracking jokes, people watching, and turning patrols into hangouts. Monarch wasn’t attacking, and, as the days went by, she just got more anxious that he was planning something big. Despite it all, Marinette couldn’t help but fall a little harder for Chat Noir every time they met up.
“Tikki,” Marinette whined, “what am I gonna do?” She wanted to do something about her feelings. It was stupid, and she knew it, but maybe it would help her.
Maybe if Marinette just got her feelings off her chest, then she could move on. Besides, Chat Noir had stopped getting her red roses. Maybe he’d moved on. Maybe she could tell him how she felt, he’d let her down gently, and then she could move on and they could continue being just…partners. Which was fine! She was totally fine with that. Completely fine with it.
The only problem was, she didn’t know how she could confess her feelings. Simply going up to him and telling him scared her. She was never able to confess to Adrien that way, and her complicated plans never worked either. So, what could she change so that it would?
Marinette stared at the ceiling for some time, trying to think of something that could work. Abruptly, she sat up straight, “That’s it! I’ve got it!”
Tikki stopped nibbling on her macaron, “What is it?”
Marinette simply grinned, leaping down the ladder from her bed loft. She stumbled as she landed on the ground, then quickly scrambled to regain her balance. She then grabbed her bag and ran down stairs, birding a quick goodbye to her parents. She had things to do.
————
Chat Noir sighed, staring at the clouds above him. They were dark and gray, signaling possible rain. Did that mean patrol would be canceled? He hoped not. He really enjoyed getting to spend time with Ladybug when they weren’t fighting an akuma. Sure, the most they would be was friends, but he would take that over not knowing her at all.
His cat ear flicked as her heard her land on the rooftop behind him. Chat turned around, finding Ladybug standing a little awkwardly with her hands behind her back, almost as though she was… shy? No, that couldn’t be right. Why would Ladybug be shy around him?
“Well, hello there, my lady,” he said lightly, standing up to greet her. He would usually take her hand and kiss the back of it but. Well. Her hands were behind her back so he really couldn’t do that. Wait. Was that what she wanted to tell him? Did she find it annoying or uncomfortable when he kissed her hand? Was that why she was acting a bit weirdly?
“Hello, Chat Noir,” she replied with a small smile. Ok, that was way too formal. It almost seemed like she was trying to be polite. There was definitely something on her mind. He was about to ask her what was going on when she continued, “I, um. I have something for you?” It sounded more like a question than a statement.
“Oh, cool,” he hummed, trying to act nonchalant and not like he was trying to figure out why she was acting so weird. They’d been getting much closer and much more familiar with each other. They were rarely ever awkward around each other. Why was she acting so different all of the sudden?
(The way she was acting felt familiar, not to her, but to someone else. Something at the back of his mind seemed close to figuring something out, but it went away as soon as he tried to understand it. Maybe it was best not to think too much of it.)
Slowly, she brought her hands back around to her front, holding out one hand toward him to present a red rose. “This is for you,” she murmured.
Chat Noir blinked. Then blinked again. That was a red rose. The same kind that he’d get her whenever he’d confess his love for her. Did she know what it meant? Surely, she did, right? He’d told her before. “Ladybug… you know what this rose means, right?” He just wanted to double check. He didn’t want to get his hopes up.
Above him, the sky crackled as little drops of rain began to fall. Ladybug nodded, somehow even more shy than before, a pretty crimson blush peeking out from beneath her mask. “Yes, I know what it means.” Thunder struck behind her in the distance as the realization hit him that Ladybug was being completely serious.
Oh. Oh.
She loved him. Ladybug loved him. She loved him!
Gently, Chat Noir took the rose from Ladybug’s hand, then took her other hand to lead her to a part of the roof that was under a balcony. The rain was coming down pretty hard at that point, so it was nice to be in a dry spot.
“Ladybug,” Chat Noir murmured softly, tenderly, “I love you, too.”
Ladybug’s pretty blue eyes widened and Chat Noir found himself getting lost in them. “You do? I thought… you stopped giving me the roses so I…”
“Well, I thought you wanted me to lay off on all that, right? I didn’t want to make you any more uncomfortable than I might have,” he explained.
“Oh,” she smiled — and gosh. Did she know how pretty she was? He had to tell her — “That’s very sweet of you.”
Now it was his turn to blush as Ladybug leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. She giggled at his blush and wide eyes and all he wanted to do was make her giggle again. She had the most beautiful laugh.
Chat Noir wanted to kiss her. He wanted to kiss her so badly. But that would be moving too fast, wouldn’t it? He’s wanted to kiss her for so long, but he didn’t want to push her. Instead, he tenderly brushed her fringe to the side and placed a kiss on her forehead. He grinned when he heard her gasp, pulling back to look at her somehow even more flushed face.
“It’s not fair,” Ladybug grumbled, her bottom lip jutting out in a cute pout. Chat Noir pushed down the urge to kiss it away.
Instead, he asked, “What’s not fair?”
Her blue eyes pierced his own, holding him in place. “How pretty you are.”
His heart stuttered. Oh, she was totally trying to kill him. Deciding to be playfully dramatic, he clutched at his heart and leaned back into the wall behind him. “My lady,” he gasped, “you can’t say such things and expect my heart to handle it.” He glanced back at her and winked, chest swelling with pride as she giggled yet again.
“You’re such a dork.”
“I can be your dork.” If you’ll have me, he thought, leaving that unspoken.
Ladybug’s smile softened, “I’d like that.” Wait, what? Chat Noir was definitely not expecting that. He was expecting a sigh and for her to explain yet again how dangerous it would be. “But,” she continued slowly, and he thought that surely now she would tell him it was a bad idea, “it would have to be discreet. We can’t exactly go around flaunting our weakness to Shadow Moth or whatever he wants to call himself now.”
“I can totally do discreet,” he told her, earning himself an eyebrow raise.
“Yeah, right, Mr. Professing-his-love-every-week.” Now it was his turn to pout. However, the pout quickly went away when Ladybug gently thread her fingers through his, squeezing his hand lightly. “You can do that all you want… just, maybe not in front of all of Paris.”
Slowly, an idea formed in his mind. “I think I’ll tell the whole world, actually,” he said with a smile so wide his cheeks began to hurt a little. He probably looked like the cheshire cat.
“Chat—“
He leaned in, face merely centimeters away from hers, and whispered, “I love you.”
He delighted in the way she blushed again at the proximity and sputtered, “That’s—That’s not telling the whole word.”
“You’re wrong,” he drawled, “because you’re my whole world.” He’d been wanting to use that line for so long. Maybe that made him a giant dork, but that had somehow worked because Ladybug loved him.
“Chat,” Ladybug groaned, burying her face in his chest. (She would definitely hear the way his heart picked up speed.) “You can’t just say things like that.” He simply chuckled lightly, wrapping his arms around her in a hug.
They stood like that for a few moments, the rain dropping on the balcony above them providing a nice ambiance. It was nice, he decided, to just hold her and feel the warmth of her arms around him. (He didn’t get very many hugs at home. Not anymore.) After some time, Ladybug pulled back enough to look up at him, something determined in her features.
“I’m going to plan a nice date for us,” she said, “Something to make up for the time I had been busy and then Andre the ice cream man got akumatized.”
“You don’t have to—“
“I want to,” she insisted.
Affection for her expanded in his chest, “Then I’d love that.”
Her eyes softened as she smiled back at him, though they quickly widened. “Shit,” she muttered, “I forgot to—“ She cut herself off and he knew then that whatever it was, she couldn’t tell him for identity reasons. “I’m sorry,” she sighed, “I have to go.”
But instead of leaving right away, she hesitated. Once again, there was something determined in her eyes, like she was in the middle of a battle and figuring out her lucky charm. Slowly, she rose to her toes, keeping her balance by placing her hands on his shoulders.
Ladybug inched closer, stopping right before their lips brushed. For two slow, agonizing seconds, the two of them held their breath. Then, Chat Noir leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. Ladybug leaned in further, pressing her soft, warm lips more incessantly against his. The kiss was better than he’d ever imagined. When they broke away, he was quite literally breathless.
“I’ll see you later, chaton,” Ladybug breathed, cheeks delightfully flushed. Then she was swinging away, leaving him with his heart beat thundering in his ears.
Chat Noir leaned back against the wall behind him again, this time sliding along it until he was sitting down on the rooftop. He almost wanted to pinch himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. He opted for a light smack to his cheek, which he definitely felt.
He grinned, probably looking all lovestruck and dopey as he got up. The rain had finally stopped, he noted absentmindedly. In fact, the sun was shining bright as the sun began to set, reflecting his very bright and cheery mood. As he headed home, he felt that nothing could wipe the smile on his face. That day was most definitely one of the best of his life, one he’d been waiting for and one he’d most definitely remember.

Ladynoir July 2023 Day 31: In Every Universe

--
It had been over a week since he’d last seen Ladybug. Chat Noir took to the rooftops with an excited grin. He’d been gone all week, travelling with his father and Nathalie and some other Gabriel employees to Italy for a fashion show. Ladybug had given him the Horse miraculous just in case, but Chat hadn’t need to use it. Miraculously, there hadn’t been a single akuma the whole time Chat was gone.
Unfortunately that also meant there had been no excuse for Chat to travel back to see his lady.
His pulse quickened with anticipation when he caught a glimpse of the familiar red, black-spotted suit. Ladybug was sitting up on the beams of the Eiffel Tower. It was where she went when she didn’t want to be disturbed by civilians. She didn’t seem to have noticed his approach.
Chat landed on the edge of the beam and walked over to her quickly. “I’m home!” he yelled, flinging his arms around her from the back.
“What the – Chat! You almost gave me a heart attack!” Ladybug yelped.
Chat cackled and hugged her tighter, undeterred even when she managed to twist around and flick his forehead in retaliation. That only made Ladybug squirm and try to get free even more, and eventually the hug turned into an impromptu wrestling message.
“You dumb cat!” Ladybug said when they were both laying on the beam, panting. “Did you get into the catnip or what?”
“I don’t need catnip to be happy when I’m with you, My Lady,” Chat said, rolling over and grinning at her.
She rolled her eyes. “You sure saved up all your energy for the week,” she said in exasperation.
“Actually, that’s not far from the truth,” Chat admitted, thinking about his week. It had involved a lot of slow, careful walking when he was on the catwalk, and then a lot of standing still in awkward poses during photography sessions.
And he couldn’t exactly release energy at night as Chat Noir the way he usually did, either. He thought it would just look way too suspicious if Chat Noir was suddenly seen in Italy at the same time that Adrien Agreste was travelling to Italy for work. As it was, he’d made sure not to give Ladybug any specific details about where he was going just in case.
Ladybug’s exasperation gave way to sympathy. “Was it a long week?”
“It sucked,” Chat said flatly. “In pretty much every way that a week away from home can suck.”
“Aw, I’m sorry. Come here.” She patted her lap in invitation, and Chat didn’t hesitate to scoot closer to her and lay his head in her lap. Ladybug began gently stroking his hair.
“I’m so glad I’m home,” Chat said after a couple minutes. What he didn’t say was that he was so glad to be home with Ladybug. So far as Chat was concerned, she was his home. In any universe, in every universe, that was Chat Noir’s one constant.
“I’m glad that you’re home too. I hate to admit it, but I actually missed you while you were gone,” Ladybug said. “It turns out patrols are more boring when there isn’t someone driving me crazy.”
“You love it,” Chat teased, and Ladybug scoffed.
“I do not,” she said, but when Chat peeked up at her, she was smiling. His heart melted. He’d missed moments like this with Ladybug so much.
“Tell me about your week,” he said. “How was it?”
Ladybug thought for a moment before saying, “It was alright, I guess. Nothing of particular interest happened.”
“Tell me about it anyway,” Chat said. He just wanted to lay there and listen to her voice for a while.
“Well… I guess Monday wasn’t that great. I overslept and was late for school. But then one of my friends and I went shopping in the afternoon…”
Chat snuggled into her lap, closing his eyes and allowing Ladybug’s voice to wash over him. He couldn’t think of anywhere else that he’d rather be than right here.

“I think I was destined to love you,” Chat murmured, gazing up at his lady.
“Yeah?” she asked, running her fingers through his hair.
He nodded. “I bet of all the universes where we’re Chat Noir and Ladybug, I love you in every single one. Though,” he added sheepishly, “some of those are probably one-sided on my part-”
“No,” interrupted Ladybug, her grasp on his hair tightening. “I don’t believe that.”
“…My lady?”
“In every universe where you love me? I know I love you back.” She brushed his bangs aside, kissing him gently on the forehead. “Without a doubt.”

With Miss-taken Identity and her powers of possession on the loose, it was difficult to tell friend from foe. They’d had a close call with Nino — a seeming ally who had almost succeeded in taking their Miraculous.
“I’m sorry, my lady,” said Chat, collapsing to his knees. “I should’ve known it wasn’t him.” His voice was flat, hopeless. “Who can we trust? How can we possibly win?”
“We do it together,” Ladybug said firmly. “It’s you and me against the world,” she held out her hand, “right?”
He took it, a new spark of life flashing in his eyes. “Always.”

“Happy Birthday, Chat!”
Those words and an explosion of confetti greeted Chat as he landed on the rooftop. He laughed with delight, surveying the smiling expressions of his friends and teammates. Though he’d received text messages from everyone earlier that day, this was the first time he was seeing anyone today.
“I can’t believe your asshole dad made you work on your birthday,” Rena said, grabbing Chat in a hug. “What a jerk!”
“Yeah, it sucked,” Chat said, hugging her back. He let go only to be yanked into a hug by Queen Bee, and then by Carapace and Ladybug. Viperion clapped him on the shoulder affectionately.
“Did you have a long day?” Ladybug asked, reaching over to brush some confetti from Chat’s shoulders.
“It was okay,” Chat said mildly. That was an understatement. In truth, his day had sucked. The photograph session, which was only supposed to be for the morning, had stretched out forever. He’d even missed his afterschool lessons because of it. He was tired, frustrated, and achy from having to stand in one position for hours on end while the photographer, wardrobe artists, lighting people, and everyone else squabbled.
Ladybug’s face filled with sympathy. “I’m sorry. Here, come sit down. We’re not patrolling tonight.”
“We’re not?” Chat said with surprise.
“Nope. Ladybug brought cake, and I brought hot chocolate,” Queen Bee said, dragging Chat over to a blanket that had been spread out. There was a picnic basket and some thermoses waiting for them.
The others followed and they all sat down in a circle. Ladybug opened the basket and took out six cupcakes. Chat was torn between laughing and crying when he saw that she’d decorated them to be miraculous-themed. Laughter won out when she handed him the Ladybug cupcake, which had red frosting with delicate black spots.
“These are so cute,” Rena said, looking at her Carapace cupcake with delight.
“They’re great. Thank you, My Lady,” Chat said, and she smiled at him.
“Happy Birthday, Chaton,” she said softly.
“Let’s toast!” Viperion said, holding his cupcake up.
“To Chat Noir!” Carapace cried as they bumped their cupcakes together.
“To Chat Noir!” the others echoed, and then they all took huge bites of their cupcakes.
“Wow, this is delicious!” Chat said. The inside of his cupcake was chocolate with raspberry filling. It turned out that each cupcake was a different flavor.
Ladybug blushed and waved away their praise. “It was nothing, but I’m glad they taste good.”
Queen Bee broke out the hot chocolate then. Viperion passed the cups around. Chat took a sip of hot chocolate and a bite of his cupcake and felt good for the first time all day. That was what pushed him to make his announcement.
“I want to move out of my dad’s house now that I’m 18.”
Everyone looked at him in surprise.
“I have some money saved up,” Chat went on. “So I’m going to quit my job, too. I hate modeling. I’m sick of it. I can’t take it anymore.”
“… Whoa,” Rena said after a moment, blinking.
“Does your dad know about this?” Carapace asked.
“No. I’m going to tell him tomorrow,” Chat said.
“Where will you go?” Viperion and Ladybug asked almost simultaneously.
“I… don’t know yet,” Chat admitted.
“Yes, you do,” Queen Bee declared. “You’ll come live in the hotel with me. You can have your own room and it won’t cost you anything. It’ll still be you against the world, but for free.” She flashed him a smile, and Chat returned it with a grateful look.
Ladybug reached over and grabbed Chat’s hand. She didn’t say anything, but she squeezed his hand hard. It was exactly what Chat needed. He squeezed back and gave the group a shaky smile.
Tomorrow was going to be a nightmare. Tonight, he was celebrating with his friends and his lady.

“Alright everyone, height order!” Mme. Bustier said, clapping her hands to get her class’ attention. “Photos are today!” “Hey, DC!” Kim called, hands around his mouth to combat the discussions of hair anomalies and growth spurts around him. “You, Agreste, back to back. You know the drill.” Marinette groaned and folded her arms. For both years they had done class photos, when they were 14 and when they were 15, Adrien and Marinette were near identical in height. The trusty old back-to-back check hadn't cut it. But in the past year, Adrien had grown massively. Like, a whole head taller. If Marinette stood to his back this year, she'd be like a gnome next to a prince. “Not funny, Chaton,” she growled under her breath.

“But I’m taller than Viperion.”
Ladybug laughed, then stopped when she realized Chat wasn’t laughing with her. “Wait, are you serious?”
“Of course!” He looked so serious that she half wondered if it was a joke after all. “Come on, take a look at us back to back,” he said, pulling a bemused looking Viperion closer.
Ladybug studied the two boys. “Well, Kitty…”
He perked up, only to deflate when she continued.
“It’s definitely Viperion. But don’t worry, Chaton,” she pressed a kiss to Chat Noir’s cheek, “you’re still my favorite.”
He blushed.
“Even if you’re shorter than Viperion.”
“Hey!”

“I just want to crawl into bed and stay there for like a week. Is that really too much to ask?” Ladybug wondered, stumbling over to one of the reclining chairs on her balcony. She sank into it and stared up at the sky, feeling so tired that she couldn’t even bring herself to detransform.
Because if she did, she’d have to go downstairs to find cheese and cookies for Tikki and Plagg without her parents seeing, and probably some food for her partner too. That was beyond her at the moment.
“According to Hawkmoth, yes,” Chat said glumly. He sounded as exhausted as Ladybug felt. He sat down on the other reclining chair and sighed, running a hand through his messy hair.
“I just don’t get what’s up with him lately. Is he on vacation from his normal job or what?” Ladybug said. “He’s been sending akumas out back to back! I feel like every time I blink, there’s another akuma in Paris. It’s getting ridiculous.”
“Maybe he’s bored,” Chat said. “Or maybe he’s just trying to overwhelm us.”
That was, Ladybug thought, the more likely explanation. Hawkmoth was a dick like that. And unfortunately, if that was his plan, it was starting to work. Both she and Chat were getting so fatigued that they were starting to make dumb mistakes. But that was what happened when you fought six akumas in the span of three days. That was an average of two akumas per day for crying out loud.
She closed her eyes for a moment, sighing. The cool, early morning air felt nice on her face. She could easily fall asleep right here. What she wouldn’t give for her and Chat to have just a couple of hours to themselves. Chat needed the sleep even more than she did, what with how hard his father had been driving Adrien lately. Gabriel Agreste was also a dick, just for the record.
“What would you think…” Chat began, then trailed off.
Ladybug looked over at him. “What would I think of what?”
“Well… this is getting to be too much for us, My Lady. We need help.”
“We have help,” Ladybug said, confused. “We have Carapace and Rena Rouge and Queen Bee and Viperion when we need them, and Paon as an extra back-up.” In fact, during three out of the six battles, Ladybug had had to go fetch Rena Rouge for help. She’d gone to Carapace and Queen Bee twice.
“I know. But frankly, it’s getting really hard for me to keep an akuma occupied while you’re gone,” Chat said. “I think we should consider letting them keep their miraculous for good.”
Ladybug bit her lip and didn’t say anything. Truthfully, the thought had crossed her mind once or twice too. But even though she was the guardian know, she didn’t know if she wanted to cross that line. Master Fu had always been adamant that it was too dangerous to allow more miraculous out there fulltime so long as the Butterfly and Peacock were in the wrong hands.
“I’m not trying to pressure you. I’m just saying. I think it’s something we should talk about,” Chat said gently. “You trust our teammates, right? And LB… we cannot keep going at this pace. Something has to give. We need help that you don’t have to leave akuma fights to go get. Help that can just show up right away.”
An image flashed into Ladybug’s mind then, of her and Chat reporting to an akuma battle only to find that their teammates were already on scene. She wanted that, she realized.
And Chat was right. She did trust their teammates, even Queen Bee. Master Fu had never been able to trust anyone but Ladybug, and to a much lesser degree Chat Noir. But Ladybug didn’t want to be like that. There was a reason she’d chosen the people she had for the miraculous in the first place.
“Not Paon,” she said. “He’s too new and needs more practice.”
Chat looked delighted. “But the other four?”
Ladybug nodded slowly. “We can give it a try.”

~~~
As it turned out, losing her memories didn’t preclude Ladybug from wielding the Miraculous again.
“The amnesia prevents Guardian secrets from falling into the wrong hands,” Plagg had explained. “Now that the memories are gone, she’s like anyone else.”
So although Scarabella had taken over in the immediate aftermath… Paris needed Ladybug. As a “new” holder, she was exemplary. So similar, and yet…
Chat sighed. “I miss you sometimes, my lady.”
She fixed him with a puzzled frown. “What are you talking about, Chat Noir? You still have me.”
“Yes.” He smiled sadly. “But I miss you all the same.”
Under a Parisian Sky
In honor of the movie being released (and also LadyNoir July) have a piece I finished almost a month ago. I thought the prompt “You Still Have Me” was most fitting, so here you go :)
Ladynoir July 2023 Day 28: You Still Have Me
“Ladybug, to your left!” Rena Rouge shouted.
Ladybug moved instinctively, narrowly avoiding the pulse of bright purple light. They weren’t sure yet what the purple light did, but the people who got hit with it vanished. It made Ladybug feel cold to see people fade away like that; it reminded her uncomfortably of Timebreaker, who had made people disappear from the timeline like they had never existed.
“What’s the plan?” Carapace called out to Ladybug.
“I’m working on it!” she yelled back, trying to study the akuma while she ducked and ran. Today’s akuma hadn’t said a word, which was very unusual. Its sole objective seemed to be hitting as many people with that purple light as possible. That made it much harder to discern where the akumatized object was.
“Maybe you should use your Lucky Charm!” Rena gasped, landing beside Ladybug. She looked somewhat harried. The akuma was fast with that light.
“I don’t know where the object is. I don’t know what I’m aiming for.” Ladybug’s eyes roved over the akuma, taking in the bright purple outfit. Nothing stood out to her. She hesitated to use her Charm too early, because then she’d have to go recharge Tikki if it didn’t work.
She darted away from Rena as the akuma rained purple light down on them. Rena ran towards Carapace, but Ladybug knew that two people together made a bigger target. So she purposely steered away from them, heading towards the perceived safety of a nearby alley.
“Take that!” Chat’s voice rang out above them as he came from the left, slamming into the akuma with enough force to send the akuma flying. Chat did a backflip and landed neatly.
The akuma lurched upright, looking very angry. Ladybug tensed as that dreadful, colorful blaster came into view.
“Chat, look out!” she cried.
But even as she spoke, instead of aiming at Chat, the akuma turned and aimed at Ladybug. And because Ladybug was looking at Chat, she missed it.
“My Lady!” Chat leapt towards her.
All the breath got knocked out of Ladybug as he slammed into her. The two of them fell backwards. For a moment, Ladybug thought that both of them were safe – that Chat had got them both of out of the way –
And then he vanished right out of her arms.
“Chat!” Ladybug screamed.
The akuma laughed. It was the first sound that it had made.
“Ladybug!” Rena ran to her and grabbed her shoulders. Carapace was right behind her. He activated Shellter, giving them some protection.
“Chat is – he’s –” Ladybug gulped.
“He got hit on the ankle,” Rena said. “But hey, it’s okay.” She crouched down. “You still have me, okay? And Carapace is here too. You’re not alone.”
Ladybug didn’t really know how to tell them just how poor of a solace that was. She didn’t want her other teammates; she wanted her kitty back. She was so freaking tired of akumas targeting Chat Noir. She had lost count of how many times Chat had been hurt in some way during akuma battles – and it was even worse that so many of those times had come from Chat protecting her.
She swallowed the angry words down, because she knew Rena was just trying to help, and slowly got to her feet.
“Let’s regroup,” she said unsteadily. “We might have to call in reinforcements. Queen Bee and Viperion would be really helpful.”
They should’ve called Viperion in earlier. He could’ve undone what had happened to Chat if they had. If she had. Ladybug set her jaw, refusing to cry.
She would get Chat back no matter what.
