Violet
Summer sticky sweet
Iced lavender tea
Sunshine, bare skin
Body half covered
In wrinkled cotton sheets
Vase of purple flowers
Picked by a lover
Heady nights, no sleep
Then soft lilac mornings like these

On the topic of humans being everyone’s favorite Intergalactic versions  of Gonzo the Great: Come on you guys, I’ve seen all the hilarious additions to my “humans are the friendly ones” post. We’re basically Steve Irwin meets Gonzo from the Muppets at this point. I love it.
But what if certain species of aliens have Rules for dealing with humans?
Don’t eat their food. If human food passes your lips/beak/membrane/other way of ingesting nutrients, you will never be satisfied with your ration bars again.
Don’t tell them your name. Humans can find you again once they know your name and this can be either life-saving or the absolute worst thing that could happen to you, depending on whether or not they favor you. Better to be on the safe side.
Winning a human’s favor will ensure that a great deal of luck is on your side, but if you anger them, they are wholly capable of wiping out everything you ever cared about. Do not anger them.
If you must anger them, carry a cage of X’arvizian bloodflies with you, for they resemble Earth mo-skee-toes and the human will avoid them.
This does not always work. Have a last will and testament ready.
Do not let them take you anywhere on your planet that you cannot fly a ship from. Beings who are spirited away to the human kingdom of Aria Fiv-Ti Won rarely return, and those that do are never quite the same.
Basically, humans are like the Fair Folk to some aliens and half of them are scared to death and the others are like alien teenagers who are like “I dare you to ask a human to take you to Earth”.

that’s enough “grieving” when a person transitions. you didn’t lose a kid, you lost a concept. you gained a kid who is happier & healthier & has so much more joy in their life. learn to celebrate instead.

Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and untreated various other mental health issues, I learned to mask my "weird" and "abnormal" behaviors exceptionally well, starting from a very young age. It applies to innocuous things like learning to fidget in unobtrusive ways (pretending to take notes during class but really just drawing infiniti symbols all across my notebook page because it feels and looks nice to make little swoopies with my pen over and over), but also happens with bigger things too.
For example, even my friends can't tell when I'm drunk, because somewhere in my brain some little overworked foreman in gray coveralls is screaming "ACT NORMAL!!!" as pipes burst and alarm bells scream around him. And so I actually come off as extra eloquent, laid back, and put together.
However, when I'm really really struggling, like can barely get out of bed to go pee, can't make myself cook anything let alone eat, lay in my bed with the curtains drawn and more or less just stare at the wall for days on end type struggling; when I'm running on three hours of sleep because my mom had to be rushed to the hospital and almost died last night type struggling; when I can't find any hope left in the world and can't possibly imagine living another 70+ more years with this horrible aching empty loneliness at not understanding what is going through everyone else's heads and why I can't communicate with them properly type of struggling; my masking behaviors become life threatening.
Because while all that is going on, I can still go to school and get straight A's. I can still show up to work and interact with customers with a smiling face. I can still go out with my best friends in the whole world, and even they won't notice anything amiss.
The isolation that comes from realizing that the things in your head that occupy every one of your waking moments are slowly killing you, and nobody seems to notice, is a true hell.

In most places, killing native wildlife including snakes (venomous or not) is also very illegal. In my state, there are some pretty hefty fines and even possible jail time for killing reptiles in particular. So, even if you hate the animals, maybe consider the possible legal consequences before you grab the rake and murder that rat snake under your porch that wasn't even bothering you in the first place.
I went out to my spot in the wetlands the other day to enjoy the fine weather and soak up some of the lovely spring sunshine. Turns out I wasn’t the only one with this idea! I chanced upon this dear little banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) out sunning herself, and I sat down with my camera on the other side of the path to enjoy the sun with her. Though she certainly noticed my presence, this calm little snake was more than happy to share the space with me while she sunbathed.
Tumblr media
After I’d been shooting this snake for a little while, an older couple spotted us on the path and frantically warned me that the snake was in fact a highly venomous and aggressive cottonmouth snake… which is definitely not the case here. This is an incredibly common misconception around here, and although I am always in favor of erring on the side of caution when it comes to dangerous wildlife, it does concern me that the harmless banded water snake is so often labeled as a deadly threat and killed as a result. I happily let the couple know that this animal was a non-venomous species and explained the different features that let me know this was a banded water snake. Once they knew she was harmless, they stuck around to watch her with me for a bit and took a few pictures.
While cottonmouths (also known as water moccasins) are from the viper family of snakes, the banded water snake is actually from an entire different family called Colubridae. Colubrid snakes have slender heads and necks and that sweet little puppy dog face that you can see on this gal! If you live in a place where snakes are common, it is very helpful to have at least a passing familiarity with the predominant species in your area. Being able to educate people when a species is a harmless and helpful fixture of the ecosystem is deeply empowering and allows you to advocate for these animals that are so often killed due to mistaken identity. You should never ever kill a snake simply for existing, but to do so to a non-venomous animal that could never hurt you or your pets is especially heinous. Snakes are so unfairly maligned even by people who consider themselves animal lovers, and it breaks my heart to see them thoughtlessly killed so often. Arming yourself with knowledge and standing up for snakes online is a great way to be a steward of wild spaces from your computer or phone!

alright but here’s the real personality quiz: do you wear a fabric mask with some kind of pattern or a plain colored mask, or one of those disposable masks that they use in hospitals?

I highly recommend inviting your friends to do randomly romantic & weird fun stuff. Invite them to a picnic at the park and show up with a kite. Throw tea parties with tiny finger sandwiches. Have a Crafts Day where everyone gets to decorate their own hats/accessories/teacups for future tea parties. Encourage shenanigans & surprises! Host a Costume Movie Night but put a different theme on each invitation (formal wear, pajamas, last year's halloween costume)! Drink sparkling juice out of champagne glasses during a Board Game Night where the winners have to speak in a character accent for the rest of the evening. Infinite possibilities, but it's your job to manifest them!
If you want a fun weird friend group, first you must encourage fun weirdness!!! Cultivate the garden you want to live in.
