I love a literal translation, the stranging of English, so here's a literal one of another hymn to Venus:

O anheb [Venus] dawning star, darkness great its light, night star sun its-ancestor rising

dawn point its-home triangle your beam you shine

Nightly swamp its-stomach you wade, bats and crows its-companion you nest

Knotted methods rivers its-companion night its-stomach one wove

Mighty, slow movement its-companion your joy you do

Moon its light its-companion watery your work this great ram it sees

All the hyphenated possessive phrases, its-companion, its-stomach, etc, are relation nouns/adpositions derived from possessive forms and body parts:

Its-ancestor: prior to, before

Its-home: to (destination)

Its-stomach: in, inside

Its-companion: with, by, beside

Re: how in accusative langs its a more privileged position to be the subject than the object, and was reading about how in ergative languages, you can use the antipassive to 'promote' the ergative agent to the absolutive experiencer position the same way that accusative languages use the passive to promote the object to the subject position...

- so, wondering if that is an underlying metaphor in ergative languages the same way that being the subject is a metaphor for prestige in accusative languages English, at least.

Or is it only privileged to be an absolutive experiencer of an intransitive verb, vs. an absolutive patient of a transitive verb.

The first two lines of the plantain verse (see #nine herbs charm): ek ama, sabak, sojuneth abccegradu, kabarag agebeg, kuluk abma'du abodun

Ek, the conjunction "and" looks like a salmon head

Most of my VC and CV syllables stem from playing with the shapes of the alphabet, and I usually try to make them into little creatures (although most of them are more abstract than this)

The 2SG.ABS pronoun and prefix aga/ag- is is this little swan/ship/snail:

At the top of the far right column you can see the word abma'du, "your face", formed from the five-crest ab 2SG.ERG prefix, the logogram MAT, "face", with the skull suffix that elides the final consonant, and the three upward curls of the possessive suffix -du.

so "incubus" means someone who lies on top of something, and "succubus" means someone who lies underneath something, and the former also turns up in the word "incubate", which means to lie on top of an egg. To ensure closure we could therefore posit an analogous term "succubate", which would be something like this:

Still getting used to doing ABS-ERG, and some phrases, like "plantain, herbs their-mother" are wierd cause the main player is plantain but it's being put in the absolutive bc it's "owned" by the herbs, even though she is superior to them...

Starting to get why some erg langs have animacy splits .

There is an alternate construction I could have done, sabak, mem eb sojun which is just "mother of herbs" and obviates the ERG-ABS issue, maybe I should go with that.

Or I could say "herbs, your children" sojuneth abccegradu, that is actually a better solution that keeps plantain in the ergative.

Thinking of the phrase "You withstood them" in the Nine Herbs charm.

It's interesting in terms of agency since the initiator is the attacking "them" while the subject is somewhat passive/reactive. However the next line - "You dashed against them" reverses this somewhat and gives a much more active role to the 2nd person.

In Lamegtu where the verb morphology is ergative/absolutive, trying to think if there's a cool way to play with that. Maybe with an antipassive or something.

From the beginning I've been designing the syllabary of Lamegtu Larsa as CVC syllables and suddenly today I was like...it would probably make more sense as CV syllables...😛 Although then it really starts to feel like Classic Maya...

I've finally working though Reading the Maya Glyphs in conjunction with taking a glyph class through Mesoamerican Studies Online and it's led to a lot of fruitful development of lamegtu larsa. Initially I was keeping it somewhat close to English in syntax, just cause I wanted to be learnable [by me] and was content to go with familiarity over innovation. But. There are lots of cool features in Maya languages and I'm grabbing a few of them.

I've tried syntactic ergativity in the past and confused the heck out of myself, but I've always been interested in verb valency and now I'm doing morphological ergativity with Lamegtu and enjoying it. (Tho I haven't tried any subclauses or anything yet so maybe I'm living in a fool's paradise til the other shoe drops 😆)
