Through this activity, I have been enlightened on how these calamities or disasters greatly affect the living of a person especially how it affects the whole society on their daily living conditions. This also highlighted the importance of having the knowledge of preparedness and alertness whenever it is needed to take action if ever a certain calamity comes through the area.
Barangay 465 is a low-lying area making torrential rains immediately cause floods within the area. Not only that, most barangays in Manila are flood-prone which makes waste disposal a huge factor in flooding. Regular collection of garbage are conducted by the government to avoid displacement of trash—proper waste management should be implemented in order to attain a flood-free community.
The barangay is practicing its resiliency to disasters by conducting seminars and drills to orient the residents in the community. Also, emergency kits are ready to be distributed whenever needed in times of accidents.
Although the barangay does not experience all calamities, that is why they only have the preparedness for the common ones that hit the area often. Despite being the case, the barangay chairman still resiliently prepares for it even though they are not that much shouldered on the budget.
Today, most people in the area know already what to do whenever a certain calamity hits them. This is also because of their participative attribute for the seminars and orientations conducted. As for the barangay chairman, he always pursues to instill these basic rules as for the people to act properly in times of disasters.
Disaster preparedness provides a platform to design effective, realistic and coordinated planning, reduces duplication of efforts and increase the overall effectiveness of National Societies, household and community members disaster preparedness and response efforts. Disaster preparedness activities embedded with risk reduction measures can prevent disaster situations and also result in saving maximum lives and livelihoods during any disaster situation, enabling the affected population to get back to normalcy within a short time period. This is not a single-time activity, it is a continuous and integrated process resulting from a wide range of risk reduction activities and resources. It requires the contributions of many different areas—ranging from training and logistics, to health care, recovery, livelihood to institutional development.
