it doesn’t matter how good you’re doing, those sad nights will creep up on you from time to time and that’s ok. doesn’t mean all your progress is gone

Japanese grammar: informal commands
Tumblr media
So here’s a verb form that my Japanese classes didn’t teach until like third or fourth year, which was kind of rough for me since so many of the one-word sentences in anime and manga use it. SO MANY.
It’s a simple, forceful, informal command, used more often by male speakers than female speakers. It sounds very blunt and can come across as pretty rude, so don’t use it in real conversations unless you really know what you’re doing!
How you make this form depends on what kind of verb you have.
If it’s a “ru” verb (which all end in -eru or -iru), you change the “ru” to “ro”:
たべる (taberu) “eat” –> たべろ (tabero) “Eat!”
やめる (yameru) “stop doing” –> やめろ (yamero) “Stop!” “Don’t!”
みる (miru) “look” or “see” –> みろ (miro) Look!
If it’s an “u” verb (which can end in any -u syllable), change the -u to -e:
いく (iku) “go” –> いけ (ike) “Go!”
まつ (matsu) “wait” –> まて (mate) “Wait!” [not “matse” because there isn’t a “tse” in Japanese, just a “te”]
いう (iu) “say” –> いえ (ie) “Say it!”
If it’s an irregular verb (する or くる):
する (suru) “do” –> しろ (shiro) “Do it!”
くる (kuru) “come” –> こい (koi) “Come here!”
Extra examples under the cut.

I think I need to remind myself that I literally have my entire life to study languages and I don’t need to be fluent in everything right now or worry about my growing list of languages that I want to study cause I do have time.

My eating disorder has been so bad lately,
I don’t want it to interfere with my life, but the thoughts have been terrible. I’ve been engaging in behaviours and I know I have to stop.
I think it’s something about the winter festivities and the whole “New Year, new me/this is the year I will accomplish everything” that gets to me. Not just the diet culture myth that “you will lose the weight this year”. But also the resolutions where people asked what you will improve this year = thinking about my flaws = feeling self-hatred = engaging.
I’m sorry for the ramble. Putting things into words helps.
I hope you’ve all been gentle with yourself so far this year.

You say ‘amateur’ as if it was a dirty word. ‘Amateur’ comes from the Latin word ‘amare’, which means to love. To do things for the love of it.
