buddie - teen - 3.4k - set in 8x18
“Where’s Chris?” Buck asks when they step into the house.
Eddie’s eyes flick up from where he’s toeing off his shoes — well, Buck’s shoes. He’d had to leave his boots at the station, along with his turnout gear. Given he arrived at the building collapse in uniform, he didn’t exactly have fresh clothes to change back into. He hadn’t even thought of it before he hit the showers, but Buck had. Left a neat pile for him, out the front of his stall: a spare LAFD long tee, worn soft, a pair of sneakers a half size too big, and some socks.
As they left the station together, Eddie noticed that Buck was wearing the same kind. Sun yellow. It’s dark in the house now, but Eddie can still see them peaking out from beneath Buck’s jeans, a few steps ahead of him.
Buck flicks on a few lights, looks back at Eddie in question.
Right.
“He’s staying at Pepa’s tonight,” Eddie answers, wondering why those words feel so dangerous right now.
“Oh,” Buck says, surprised. He blinks at Eddie — once, twice. “So you’re really not booking the red eye flights?”
He asks it with a false casualness that Eddie sees right through. And yet, somehow, it’s Eddie who feels exposed by it. Like there’s a spotlight fixed on him, bright and demanding.
He glances away, not for the first time since they arrived back at the station, since Chimney’s speech to the 118 — to Eddie, specifically.

had a thought about how weird it must be for anyone of the 118 + extended family to go to the doctor for a regular check up and give the doctor their history of illnesses and accidents
wdym shot at age 16, rebar through skull, propofol injection, electrocuted, leg crushed by firetruck, well collapsed on top of person, struck by lightning, two shootings, drowning, slashed throat, dispatch center collapse on top of person, encephalitis, exposed to super ebola, radiation poisoning?
the least insane thing is a pulmonary embolism at age 27 … which is definitely not not insane irl

room for two
Buddie | Explicit | 3.3k Roommates, sharing a bed, smut, canon compliant through 8x14
For @thewolvesof1998 – Happy belated birthday my dear friend.
Eddie’s been different since he got back from El Paso. Not in any way Buck can put his finger on; there’s nothing specifically different, but still, different. It’s like he has a new confidence that radiates out of him like he’s the fucking sun and all Buck can do is get sucked into his orbit. Or maybe Eddie isn’t different at all and it’s Buck that’s different. Because Buck feels different. It was easy to deny Tommy’s accusation about Eddie being his competition when Eddie was in Texas and Buck wasn’t faced with the full impact of him. FaceTime is great, but it doesn’t include the smell of Eddie’s cologne or the way his jeans hug his ass just right or the way his throat works when he’s drinking a beer. Shit, yeah, Buck is different. He can’t deny it to himself any more, he’s definitely in love with Eddie and anyone he tries to date will have Eddie as competition. It’s impossible to not compare people to Eddie when he’s got Eddie right there in front of him. He’s working on it, but it’s hard when they’re living in the same house. Buck’s honestly grateful that he worked at 48 the day after Eddie and Chris got home so he didn’t have to make up an excuse for sleeping on the couch after Eddie insisted they could share the bed. Buck’s spent the last two nights on the couch and that’s fine. It’s good, actually. Buck has no idea what he would do if he had to share a room with Eddie, let alone sharing a bed with him. “Dude, you’re not sleeping on the couch, you pay half the rent. The beds big enough for two anyway,” Eddie pushes Buck into the bedroom when he walks out of the bathroom on the third night of Buck’s 4 off. He’s almost dreading Eddie coming back to work next shift, then he’ll have no reprieve. “I promise I don’t bite — not unless you ask nicely.” Oh Buck is so fucked, but there’s really no way out of it. At least not while Eddie is awake. Buck decides he’s going to lay in bed and wait until Eddie falls asleep and then he’ll sneak out and onto the couch. “Yeah, fine,” he huffs and lets himself be bullied into the bedroom.

✨More HOPECORE for Eddie Diaz✨
Post-Finale - S8 Seismic Shifts Ep. 18 - A Rant
I think some of us forget that Eddie is still generally repressed. Like yes he was able to take control of the Chris situation and stand up to his parents to get him back but that’s not the totality of his emotional repression. (He in a ways had to get permission from his son and Buck to step up to the plate in that situation)
When Chimney made that speech and snatched that phone away in the finale: Eddie probably felt some (newfound) permission to choose his own happiness over the duties he’s made up in his head. I’m seeing some people act like Chimney commanded Eddie return and Eddie felt he had no choice. The moving back logistics not being included on screen in the episode made it seem easy but in reality Eddie made a huge step in choosing happiness/comfort. Fighting for his own life he had built not merely fitting himself in someone else’s (no shade to Chris).
This is a man who re-enlisted himself in the military for his family and almost always prioritizes something over his own comfort (thinking of others first- Ex. Letting Chris leave for El Paso). The speech scene wasn’t as extensive as necessary to properly convey but I think from it Eddie felt like his chosen family was finally telling him he was wanted/needed in their lives (he assumed ~resigned himself to the idea that~ they didn’t need him long term or in person, yes there’s the 8x17 storyline but that’s treated as short term assistance for Buck, not long term).
Him not snapping at Buck choosing to transfer in the early parts of the finale was proof that Eddie doesn’t even have the tools to stop destructive behavior of his loved ones, so why does it feel like some of the fandom assumes he has easy access to those tools for himself? Though he was surprised by what Buck said, he didn’t fight back at Buck in that scene because he understood what Buck was doing. Eddie staying strict to his plan to go back to Texas, even after choosing to be there with his 118 family during the emergency, is him running away from the pain of the changed circumstances of the 118 with Bobby gone (just like Buck, even though for Eddie it is way more convenient). He allowed himself a prolonged stay for his own grief but still thought about his “duty” to create stability for Chris in Texas.
I understand people wanting more Chris and Eddie development (resolution) in season 8 after the whole situation that caused Chris to leave. However I do feel like the addition of the finale montage scene with Chris wanting to go see his friends and asking Eddie was them reminding the audience that Chris had a life in L.A. before he left and similarly to Eddie I think he did not enjoy El Paso for a multitude of reasons (his grandparents probably sucked a lot of the life out of it). Thus Chris was more understanding than a lot of the fandom assumes he would be at a decision of this caliber (moving back) from his dad (think back to earlier s8 with how they show his love for his dad and how he didn’t replace that role in his life with his grandparents like Eddie sorta assumed).
Hence, yes there was some meh writing for the speech scene (concerning Eddie) but I think I can understand how it and the rest of the episode fits for his character. Let’s hope he continues on a trajectory of choosing joy and not feeling burdened.
Going forward, I do assume he still feels burdened by the expectation of replacing Shannon for Chris, but I think he will start to realize that Chris is fine without it (since he is growing up) and that will give him permission to actually realize what he wants over what he thinks he needs. Having that in S9 will help bring more resolution to that whole situation that caused Chris to leave.
In conclusion, Eddie Diaz is trying his best and I think he is on a good path moving forward! :) <3

Yeah so I've seen people go after the actors and that's not cool. You hated the finale? Cool! Me too! But the actors didn't write the finale. The actors didn't kill Bobby off. The actors are doing their jobs (by playing off of scripts they probably got 3 minutes before first take.)
If you need an outlet for your rants and you don't want to just yell into the Tumblr void, use ABC's feedback form. That's what it's there for. And, sure, maybe all those messages go straight to the trash, but at least you're not bullying someone who had no say in the matter and who might be just as unsatisfied as you are.

one of eddie’s most cherished and beloved family members who has known him his entire life and watched him grow and saw him through a teen pregnancy and a shotgun wedding and worried and prayed for him while he was at literal war and helped him transition to becoming a single father then a widower and who has just always wanted him to not be alone and to be loved, seeing that someone has seamlessly slotted into his life and loves him and makes him happy and not even having to say anything about it just watching it and welcoming this person and being so grateful. one day maybe very recently she saw them together as a family or maybe just heard eddie talk about buck with his fond buck smile and just thought “ohh I see I understand. well thank god. finally.” and it literally doesn’t matter that he’s a man or whatever all that matters is that Eddie isn’t alone. and that someone is finally cooking in that fucking kitchen. tia pepa forever.

i'm not sure how to phrase this so please bare with me
season 8 was way too packed to introduce a major character death pretty much halfway in, it just made it worse. we had so many storylines, so many good storylines too, but they never gave those stories room to develop and a chance to wrap up, so it was gonna feel like a let down inevitably
having the dad of the show die is gonna derail those personal storylines, i'm not arguing that, but they can't call that death a creative decision to have those characters develop and then just not do anything in that regard, and even worse undo some of the progress they had introduced that season
and that genuinely applies to every character. chimney and maddie sped run through an insane trauma and a whole pregnancy, with maddie barely getting a chance to process that trauma for one episode. hen and karen had their son almost die on then and just never had any follow up on that, they fostered a kid they had difficulty bonding with and it mainly happened off screen. buck was on a path of so much personal development and maturing especially in regards to his relationship. eddie had the whole joy and el paso storyline. none of these had the wrap up they deserved. and worse, the plots were simply dropped in the case of buck and eddie especially. because it was too much at the same time. and to have bobby die in the middle of that gave none of the characters the grief they deserved to go through, and the personal lessons learned from that. it all feels very incomplete.
the finale also had a massive pacing problem. i get the emergency was big, and important in the context of said personal developments. but realistically, it could've been shortened by at least 1-2 victims. it would've served the same purpose and given more room for that end sequence with having some of the talks that must've happened, especially eddie/chris and buck, on screen. there's only so much you can do with 45 minutes and the priorities felt really weird on this one. especially since it's a finale and there were so many plot lines to tie up from that insanely packed season.
and yeah, not ever committing to buddie for the sake of viewership is also a disservice to the characters. they always say if the story takes us there, and it was taking us there so blatantly obviously, that i'm more than a little annoyed about that. because it feels like bait, even if we can't know for sure if it is or isn't. i'm not saying they needed to have a wedding right in that collapsed building, but a little moment to acknowledge that the storyline was in fact not simply dropped, would've completely avoided any baiting accusations. buck and eddie had so much happening for them in s8 and it was all undone. they went through all that and yet, nothing.
i really hope they do better in season 9, this is supposed to be a comfort show and there was nothing comforting about 8b and it just gives me anxiety about season 9.

alright everyone. so. ur telling me. that in this episode. eddie is lingering in LA just cause. i suppose he’s living with buck this whole time but things are tense because of grieving. hen and karen clock that he doesn’t really want to go back to el paso and that he’s scared to tell buck about getting a job there. meanwhile. buck is assigning everyone grief scores and looking for signs from god. allegedly he’s spiraling?? wouldn’t have known that from last weeks episode! but i digress. then buck and eddie have a little domestic in the kitchen. they fight over who was gonna get groceries, eddie not telling buck about the job in el paso (married couple things to fight over) mind you the whole thing is shot and lit dramatic as fuck. then it devolves into eddie being upset that buck was underplaying his grief and making things about himself. ok. eddie (bitch. playing games) then leaves the vaguest note in the world about going to the airport. hello shannon parallel? i guess??? except sike!! this episode is about people returning. and in typical eddie fashion he feels a thing about buck so he gets chris involved as a conduit. buck immediately jumps to housewife behavior and making them family dinner. except also sike!! pepa is there and she calls buck ‘evancito’ and acts like buck is her nephew in law. eddie stares fondly. then buck and pepa have a whole conversation that’s supposed to be about accepting change, this conversation is supposed to be about bobby. but generally random for the overall theme of the episode. and instead it literally feels like it’s about his evolving relationship with eddie. also pepa refers to eddie as ‘our eddie’ and i guess eddie and chris are just??? back now?? im unclear on what’s happening there?? bobby is still dead though womp womp

I just… Eddie is gonna stay for Buck. He’s gonna run into that collapsed building and save him. And then he’s gonna stay.
No one ever stayed for Buck.
