Man if I was Andrew I'd be PISSED every time someone used Neil to ask me something stupid. You're telling me you cowards needed to use the human embodiment of my mortal weaknesses to ask if I wanna go to the club? To watch some movies together? Grow up.

Thinking about how often Jean quotes Neil to himself to feel safe. Thinking about Jean saying to Jeremy you don’t have to trust him because I do. Thinking of how Nora said if Neil had been a raven when he was supposed to be he could have never left Jean alone even after Kevin did. Thinking about Neil and his ‘one of us has to survive this, and it’s going to be him’ mentality taking root and growing into everyone he cares about. Including Jean. Thinking about misplaced forever partners. Thinking about two kids who had no one but each other in every version of the story except for the one we got, so we see this fractured longing version instead and they’re so much better off, but there’s something missing too.
#idk just thinking#aftg#jean moreau#neil josten#the way their lives are so intertwined while only overlapping a few times is amazing to me

Imagine Aaron finding out he has a twin and thinking to himself ‘wow I can’t believe I’m someone’s “evil” twin with my drug dependencies and traumatic home life’ and then he meets fucking Andrew. Like- he probably had a whole crisis over being all fucked up and feeling shame that this other version of himself would have to see him all fucked up and then the other version of himself is ANDREW. iconic. So funny. Writing peaked there.
#aftg#andrew minyard#twinyards#not that the one’s trauma cancels out the other obviously#but it’s objectively so funny to me that at one point Aaron was like damn my poor normal twin will have to deal with me#and then got himself but with more knives and a complete disregard for human life#but they love each other

One of the funniest parts of TKM is that after Baltimore when everyone knows about Andrew and Neil, they keep trying to leave them alone together in the dorms so they can make out. Like Nicky keeps dragging Kevin away and Neil knows why he’s doing this and basically says that it’s a 50/50 if Andrew will put up with it or go find them and drag them back out of spite and like—that is just so funny. Not only because Neil KNOWS, like he somehow manages to miss every other social cue ever but he can tell that they’re scheming to get them alone, but also because it implies that Andrew is in an intense battle between his lust and his spite and absolutely can not decide which will win on a given day.

happy birthday neil josten and his little fox paw doodles and his fraying-at-the-hems shirts and his scary ahh smile and his electric blue bambi eyes and his unsettling demeanour and his inability to half-ass anything except for school and his fearlessness and ruthlessness and his love for maths of ALL fucking things and his zombie cowboy halloween costume and his bad temper and his smart mouth that only knows how to talk mad shit, lie, and kiss andrew and his pretty face and his four minute mile and his favourite colour being grey and his five-something languages that he speaks and his fierce devotion to exy and the foxes and jean and his insane aura and his general nonchalance and his breakfast burrito that he hid behind and his napkin that he ordered a hit on and his stalker binder and his keys and cigarettes. i will never love another the character the way i love neil josten.

Sunshine court book 3 hc: so, the Trojans have never had a red card in their history and I’ve seen a lot of people talk about how/why/who will be the first Trojan to get one. Some say Jean, for obvious reasons, some say Jeremy for other different obvious reasons. But I raise you this: the Trojans do not get red cards. Period. It’s too important to who they are as a team, who they are as individuals, but most importantly to the ethos of the narrative. Jean grew up drowned in violence -he does not need or want to see any of that from the Trojans. He’s learning to trust and respect a version of life where violence is not, is NEVER, the answer. If I’m wrong and a Trojan gets a red in book 3, i don’t think it will be anything that we’ll enjoy seeing but I also don’t think it will happen. HOWEVER, I think it will come close and I think it’s going to go like this: Trojans vs. foxes. It’s a fun game because these are two teams who respect each other (and who have lots of fucked up best friend pairs between) but the freshman foxes have been unionizing against Neil for too long and everyone is waiting for it to reach a boiling point. It is just as important to Neil not to use violence from his position of power in a similar way to how Jean and the Trojans won’t get red carded. It’s too important to him to not be like his father and Riko to use violence to get what he wants. That being said, everyone has their breaking point. I think knowing that going into the game with USC Neil has history with Jean, jack uses it against Jean all night but Jean is better than him. He fights him off at every step and doesn’t care about his taunts not matter how close they hit to home. When Jack can’t take it anymore he goes after Jean, and this is the moment Jeremy ALMOST gets a red card, cause he’s willing to break his good behavior for jean even if he doesn’t want to. But it’s not Jean who steps in this time. It’s Neil. Neil is the one who fights Jack off and doesn’t let him get anywhere near his old partner. they both get taken off the court and Neil finally proves that their is a line Jack can’t cross. (If they keep fighting later on/elsewhere, I think the only reason Neil would fight back is because he knows if he doesn’t and lets Jack get violent with him that Andrew will step in and take it to an unforgivable level. Neil wouldn’t want to use violence, but he will as a lesser of two evils because he knows he’ll pull back when Andrew won’t.)

Aftg re-read goes crazy. When I read it the first time I knew vaguely the concept for the books as ‘sports romance with a side of thriller’ but nothing else. I finished the first book and really thought the main love interest was Kevin. I had to look at art before the second and see that it was Andrew and I was like ?????? That guy? Then of course, it all starts to make sense. But now re reading I can see the Andrew of it all from the beginning that you just could not pick up on until you *know* bc Neil’s narration is so blind. Just read the scene in TRK where they get neil a phone and they’re in the locker room and Andrew hits him with “your parents are dead. You’re not fine and nothing is going to be okay.” Etc. etc. and Neil just stares at him even though he knows his face is Doing Something because he just can’t help but feel safe and protected in that moment. That’s what you take away on the first read. But on the SECOND. It literally reads: “Andrew considered him a moment longer, then sighed and straightened out of Neil’s space.” SIR. it actually makes me crazy, because now you know that Neil is looking at him a certain type of way and having already read, you have the context of knowing that Andrew is attracted to him but at this point Neil is still fully Not Attracted to other humans really, so Andrew just has to sit there and be like…fucking hell he’s so hot and tortured and I can do nothing about this. Like sorry that is so funny, especially given Neil’s narration has a way of just making you forget that attraction is a thing most people feel cause it never crossed his mind normally, so when you zoom out and see how Andrew reads the situation it makes me actually want to start biting things.

I’m doing my first re-read in a few years, and it’s actually so funny how little Neil knows wtf is going on with the interpersonal relationships around him. Just in the first book and like he sees Dan and Matt be all in love constantly and has yet to be like ‘oh they’re dating’. Literally in the first 20 pages Nicky implies that Andrew has a monopoly on the hot guys (Kevin) and Neil hears this and still thinks his straight. Also just the general vibe of the whole beginning of the series is so disorienting being in his head, because objectively everything going on and happening to him is so crazy but he’s like this? This is light work? Like I just read the part where Dan reveals to him that Andrew comes off his meds for games and everyone is being like really serious and acting like they’re revealing something crazy and yet Neil knew he comes off his meds literally the minute they met!!!! Like that’s crazy!!!
He really looks at the world and goes, would this kill me? No? Not my fucking business then. It’s so funny.
Neil is an unreliable narrator TO YOU. I believe him.
