He stated in the statement titled, ‘Nigerian Bar Association condemns the killing of peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Lagos by the Nigerian military’, the protesters’ act of misdemeanor of a breach of the curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government “did not warrant the use of live ammunition by the Nigerian military to confront otherwise peaceful, unarmed and defenseless protesters”. The statement read in part, “The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA”) has been drawn to the dastardly shooting and killing of #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos State by some unidentified men of the Nigerian Military on Tuesday, 20th October 2020. El-rufai: Most People Think Governors Are Thieves

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, says many people believe governors are corrupt and ineffective. Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, he said being a governor is one of the most difficult things in the world. He also highlighted some of the challenges he faced when he assumed office. “We came into office at a very bad time in terms of economic viability. We came in when oil prices were crashing into the twenties and we had inherited bureaucracies that were designed and structured around $100 per barrel oil. We had inherited wages at that level as well. And all of a sudden, there was this collapse and Nigeria went into a recession,” he said. “Governors are the most suspected elected officials. Everyone thinks governors are just thieves and we are wasting state resources, we are not doing anything. Governors are assumed to be taking security votes. When people hear security votes, they think it is a slush fund for governors. So we have a very negative image out there. “Meanwhile, we have one of the most difficult jobs in the world. And we are subnational; our capacity to borrow is limited. The federal government can print money. We cannot. “Other than Lagos, very few state governments have room to do what they can do because apart from Lagos virtually every state in Nigeria relies on Federation Account transfers. And when they go down, you are in trouble.” He Read the full article

More Hardships For Nigerian Traders In Ghana Despite Truce

Nigeria Union of Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG) on Monday decried Ghanaian authorities’ refusal to open shops owned by Nigerians, even after several meetings between top officials of both governments. President of NUTAG, Mr Chukwuemeka Nnaji disclosed this in a telephone interview in Abuja. According to him, it is unfortunate that Nigerian traders’ shops have remained locked even after visits by Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of House of Representatives and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to Ghana. “The locking of shops belonging to Nigerians by Ghanaian authorities hinders our doing business lawfully. The Ghanaian government should have as a matter of bilateral relations paid attention to us by being open in its decision to tackle our trade difficulties in the host country. “I think every plea from the Nigerian government has fallen on deaf ears of the Ghanaian authorities, which is ready to destabilise and destroy our businesses to favour their citizens. “Our shops are still shut down; most shops shut down since Dec. 2, 2019 were only opened to give tax assessment for the current year by Ghana revenue authorities. I am aware most of our members complied; all the documents on Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) presented are original not fake,” he said. Nnaji said it was not true that Nigerian traders did not have genuine documents for the shops. Read the full article
