Continuing Education
Hi there, my Name is Blakely Chisman. I am a part of a group studying Canadian LA educational institutes and programs offered across Canada.  Our research towards this topic is primarily for our professional communications class at NAIT. It was my job as a part of this group to research different options that us graduates will have once we have completed the Landscape Architectural Technology program. Some key point I will touch on in the entries below, being the possibility of obtaining a bachelor's, master's or doctoral in LA. As well as where it can happen. All this and so much more will be covered below, enjoy!
If you're hoping to obtain your BLA or MLA you have two primary options once you have complete your schooling at NAIT. One in Canada( University of Guelph Ontario) and one in the U.S.  (University Of Idaho) There are many factors that can contribute to your decision however. I hope that I am able to make that life altering decision easier.
When applying to either the bachelor or masters programs at Guelph or Idaho there are a few qualifications that should be taken into consideration.
Step 1
Previous academic performance, including things like awards gpa and past work that can be submitted in your portfolio. Past schooling is used as an indicator of academic accomplishment there for, transcripts will be carefully examined.
Step 2
Background information will be sought out with the use of a questionnaire. All applications must be accompanied with the completed background information form.
Step 3
Put together a portfolio with past work that you are proud of, to show some skills you have already obtained.

Choices For Furthering Education As A LAT.
If you ask me and  many other students  at NAIT what landscape architecture is I feel that the majority will say something similar to this… landscape architecture is a profession that primarily focuses on creating meaningful and vital outdoor places. Spaces where in the busy hustle and bustle of our lives people can stop and enjoy a beautiful environment and have a chance to be around nature. LA’s and LAT’s are forced to think outside the box on a daily basis in order to be successful at what they do. You'll need to have excellent problem solving skills and be a critical thinker at all times. Being in the landscape architecture field in such a dynamic climate can be hard but the outcome it provides for the general public can be extremely rewarding. This is why I feel it is very important for students coming out of NAIT to have options on what they choose to do whether it be begin their journey in the work field or continuing their education.
U of G may stand out to you due to the cost of being a international student at U of I. This is a topic that Matt Slogan covered in our interview with him. In order to be accepted to the U of I you must have a minimum amount of $16,000 in your bank account. University is expensive no matter where you attend but being an international student may not be an option for some people so having the choice of attending school in Ontario is another great option.
University of Guelph: Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
Costs:
Full time Tuition - $6570
Residence room - $6082
Textbooks - $1320
Incidental fees (medical, athletic, student assoc) - $1278
BLA
Taking the route of UOG means that you will be able to achieve your BLA in a 4 year professional program. However, because they take the education from NAIT into consideration you will have the opportunity to transfer some credits and possibly speed up your schooling at UOG.
MLA
After completing your 4 year Bachelors in Landscape Architecture Technology, you have the option to  further your education even more. The MLA  program involves six-semesters of challenging graduate education and brings in the best of landscape architects from many academic disciplines. The MLA degree prepares you with the education and skills needed to begin your professional career in Landscape Architecture regardless of where you choose to begin your work in the field.
MLA graduates also have the choice to continue on to doctoral studies and/or faculty appointments in Canada, USA, New Zealand, Australia, and Africa.
University of Idaho: Moscow, Idaho, United States.
Costs:
International students
Full time Tuition - $24,112
Residence room - $8670
Textbooks - $1292
Incidental fees (medical, athletic, student assoc) - $1902
BLA - Do to easy entry into the graduate level M.L.A. program makes it possible to complete both the BLA and MLA in just 5 ½ years with the possibility to speed the process up due to the credits transferred from NAIT. The degree prepares you with the skills needed to excel in your career and It's a great step toward becoming a landscape architect. The accredited professional degree program that provides the training and credentials required to practice as a licensed landscape architect.
MLA - Three year program for students who hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than landscape architecture. One and a half to two year Post Professional version of the MLA available to students who already have a degree in Landscape Architecture from another university.

Ready to Work.
Hello! my name is Cassidy Eckess and I am part of a group studying Canadian Landscape Architecture Educational institutes and programs. It is my job to inform you if you’re actually prepared with the education provided for industry practice. Here are some examples of how NAIT gets there students ready for work after graduation.
At NAIT the LAT program is a two year diploma focused on ‘hands on’ learning. This is done by using the “check mark” method to insure students truly understand the concepts that have been taught to them. The program is taught by instructors that have experience and or have worked in industry. The instructors also meet with members of industry to ensure students are being taught with the right skills to succeed in a real life situations.
Students start off the program by diving right into learning and the beginning of developing the skills needed in industry. Right in first semester students must take a specific class dedicated to learning and operating a design-aid and drafting software called AutoCAD. This drafting software is used to aid with details, sections, and plan (birds eye) views of future sites in the process of development. Later on in the program students will learn and develop skills on two other software's, which are Sketch Up and Photoshop. Alongside AutoCAD, these software skills are highly valuable in firm and office work.
During the two year program NAIT provides students with opportunities to get a glance into the industry world. Some of those opportunities include a work week in there forth semester. This week gives students a chance to shadow or work along side a Landscape Architect or a Landscape Architect Technologist at any firm of there choosing. This week allows students a chance to experience what work will be like after graduation. This also allows students to understand and use the skills they have learned so far in the program. This also may highlight the skills they need to work on to get it up to industry standards.
During our interview with Matt Sloan, a Landscape Architect that works for the City of Edmonton, I did have an opportunity to ask him if he felt that the education he received at NAIT did prepare him for his first job working as a Landscape Architect Technologist. He answered saying that it defiantly took some time to get into the flow of how the office operates. But after getting into the flow, he did indeed felt prepared and was actually able to contribute a lot sooner than he expected. (To read more please read on our interview with Matt please refer to Jesse’s article.)
The other courses include Design and Presentation, Plant Material, Professional Communications, and Construction Drawings. These courses on top of the ones I have talked about can defiantly teach the students the skills needed to be a successful Landscape Architectural Tech.
In conclusion I’m personal satisfied with NAIT in preparing there students for industry work.

Hello, my name is Jesse Kuzio and I am involved in a group project for our professional communications class here at NAIT. Our topic of exploration was to get a better understanding of the Canadian LA educational institutes and programs offered across Canada. We were very fortunate to have the chance to meet with in person, and interview Matt Sloan a fellow graduate of the LAT program here at NAIT. The following is a short Q & A that we did!
Q: Why did you choose NAIT as your secondary education location?
A: Radiology originally brought Matt to NAIT, however the employer he was working for at the time suggested that he looks into the LAT program at NAIT. so he applied and jumped right in.
Q: What urged you to continue your education from LAT to become an LA?
A: I really enjoyed the LAT program, so i applied to Idaho and Guelph and I got accepted into Guelph University in Ontario, so away i went.
Q: What is your current job title being an LA for city of Edmonton?
A: I work in the public sector, kind of like a consultant role, so I am focused on one municipality which is the city of Edmonton.
Q: Where did you find yourself in the field after graduation of the LA program at Guelph?
A: I found myself working out of Kamloops BC for six years, I was working for a private firm. For the first two years I was working as a tech and I migrated into being a junior LA for the rest of my time in Kamloops.
*Fun fact Matt Sloan worked with Jennifer Joans for a year at the same firm, Urban.
Q: What was one project that really sticks out for you, that you really enjoyed working on?
A: I worked on this amazing square in Golden BC, we had a few parcels of land and created a public square, my major contribution to the project was doing a bunch of the drawings. It had a beautiful scaled rock fountain and was really welcoming and being able to see it all complete was really rewarding.
Q: would you say it in better to continue with your education after completing an LAT diploma to become a LA with a degree?
A: It really depends on where you want your life to take you, what you personally want to do. I suggest taking some time to have self refection and see where you thrive before you move on.
Quote from Matt- Great design comes from a story, from history, its important to connect your design. to the location your working with.
