it's happening again, how did it end? it wasn't a fair fight or a clean kill. these people only try and save you 'cause they hate you. they say they didn't do it to hurt me, but what if they did? you caged me and then you called me crazy. your home's really only the town you'll get arrested. they filled my cell with snakes. i wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me. is it a wonder i broke?

my spine split from carrying us up the hill. what doesn't kill you makes you aware. bet they never spared a prayer for my soul. i don't even want you back. in plain sight you hid but you are what you did. does it feel alright to not know me? try and come for my job.

when it's all roses, portrait poses... that's when she sees the littlest leaks. i patched up the crack along the wall. that's where i was when i lost it all. you can mark my words, i said it first in a mourning warning no one heard. they knew the whole time i was onto something, they all said nothing. promises ocean's deep but never to keep. when the truth comes out it's quiet.

The thing about writing advice is that most people who are in a position to give it don't really know how they do what they do.

It's like playing Hamlet: an actor can talk about the personal processes that help them to interrogate the text and get into the character's head, and they can talk about the experiences they've had that prepared them for the role, and they can talk about what they want their performance to convey and maybe even reflect on why they make certain choices. But they can't give you a ten step guide to playing Hamlet. It fundamentally doesn't work like that.

It can be frustrating. Sometimes the advice you get from authors you admire, authors whose work you relate to in an unspeakable way, is just not a good fit. It can be discouraging (why can't I see the world like they do? why can't I be up and awake and produce 2000 words before breakfast?) or it can even set you back (I mustn't use adjectives. I have to plan every page. I can't get started until I know the protagonist's grandmother's maiden name). You have to learn to see it as the individual talking to themselves, rationalising a largely automatic process in terms that can only ever correlate, never fully explain.

Only one piece of ageless advice has consistently held true for generations of good, bad and happily mediocre writers, probably since the dawn of society: steal time from your day job.

do any of you ever reach a point in your hyperfixation where you like it so much that you start feeling like you actually can't interact with it because of how much you like it. does that make any sense at all. like the idea of watching the show becomes unappealing not because your love for it is flagging but because you feel like you don't have the strength that day to contain your own excitement about it so you have to wait for a day where you don't feel so wholly consumed it makes you sick
