Let me Introduce you to my Nanowrimo Project!

So, it looks like I’m doing nanowrimo this year. I’ve never taken nano seriously before, but I have always done it so it feels wrong for me to skip out on it this year. I haven’t written in what feels like forever so I’m hoping that nano will be the perfect push to get me back into it. I’m not going to be very strict on myself, but I need to become more disciplined as I have found myself bored in my time after school and need to use my time more wisely rather than just watching tik tok until it’s time for me to fall asleep. 

Let me introduce you to my project! 

I’m starting with an all new story this time around. I’m calling it, “From the Music Hall,” right now and we’ll see if the name sticks all the way through. This novel, in the best way I can explain it now, is, “an honest look at fame through the eyes of a young girl whose life is changed in just one night spent with one of the biggest up in coming bands of the 1980s.” It stars our main character, Pheme Dara-Hawks, a young girl who has grown up with parents in the music industry who has a particular excitement to go off on her own to pursue her own dreams as she becomes an adult. On the night of her birthday, Pheme meets the members of an growing band, but particularly she meets the running man, Laurent and though he’s an older man, they fall for each other completely. But, the road to achieving the dreams of someone you love is never perfect and a life spent in a growing spotlight leaves enough room to wonder what life could have been or what life could be with someone different. 

I am so incredibly excited to get started on this project. I came up with this idea earlier in the month in a cumulative inspiration of the book, “Daisy Jones and the Six,” and my love of celebrities such as Harry Styles whose life I’ve lived alongside for years which totally fascinates me. With this project, I hope to explore the ideas of fame and how it destroys people, but how people allow for fame to change them. My main character serves as the storyteller as her story arc proves her to become a strong woman capable of having a voice of her own. Throughout the story, I hope that I can make interesting commentary on the music industry and most importantly the effect it has on women and toxic masculinity and how these problems interact with each other. 

I’m planning on doing weekly updates because I worry that if I do chapter by chapter updates, I will end up wasting time being finicky with my posts rather than spending time writing. I am planning on following the nano word count so that I can get at least half of a draft started, but we’ll see how it goes. I can’t wait to catch up with other people who plan on participating in nano and to follow along with your beautiful stories! Best of luck to all of us!

Everything Disappears Underwater: Chapter One Editing Update

Hi everyone! I’m in desperate need for some writing inspiration as I haven’t sat down to write anything in about two months. This break, unplanned, was very important I believe, but I’m now beginning to want to get back into some projects so I figured this might help me. Today, I’m going to be talking about my novel, Everything Disappears Underwater, which I’m currently working on the second draft of. This novel is one I’m hoping to make my debut, but who knows how things will turn out so I’m just trying to go with the flow, trying to just make my second draft as perfect as it can be. This is a story that I wrote last summer after many failed half drafts using my two main characters. I have always been in love with my two boys, Kash and Elian, who I created in middle school for an entirely different story and when that idea failed, I tried to fit them into the many other novel ideas I had, but nothing ever stuck. Eventually, I got to the point where I just wanted to write out their story and I let the characters take over for me and that how I got to this-

Everything Disappears Underwater is a story about two best friends, Kash and Elian, who have been close since Elian moved to America in the second grade. The boys were sat together because Kash dealt with selective mutism that left them creating a secret language between the two of them until Elian’s English was polished enough that he could coax Kash to have a conversation with him. Kash is Elian’s much quieter half. He is an empathetic person, but he doesn’t care to get involved with the problems of people that he doesn’t know. Elian keeps him up to date with the affairs of others and his own problems. They make a grand duo, but they’re both too stubborn to take their relationship to the next level. Elian believes that one choice can affect the rest of someone’s life while Kash believes the exact opposite; one’s fate is decided the day that they are conceived and they can do nothing to change it. They’re both crazy in their own right which creates the mess that is the last summer before they go off to college.

(this is just a brief description of my boys, I’ll probably make a post that goes deeper into who they are because I just love them so much) 

With that, let’s get into chapter one!

We start on the night just after the boys last day of high school. Instead of celebrating, the two of them hang out at their local, small town diner. Kash reflects on the idea of death and how he loves sleeping because it is the only time when he’s given peace. Just before he falls asleep completely, Elian forces him awake so that the two of them are able to reflect on their high school years. This is a fairly short chapter that simply gives an introduction to Kash and Elian, their relationship, and their views on existence which is a major theme of the book.

“Dreams usually went the same for Kash. His dreams weren’t anything exaggerated, he was never chased down by zombies nor was he ever thrown into space like he heard others say. He was always jealous of people who dreamt such ways though. Because the real world was no dream and though things like being Elian’s lover were, it only made all parts of his days unbearable, even the hours of his days he was fast asleep. 

His dreams were easy for him to forget. Until he was sat in the exact seat he was just hours before and his hand moved to the top of the table before realizing that the memory of it in Elian’s was not real. He’d describe Elian’s hand as smooth, his fingers perfectly polished and coated with a thin layer of clear nail polish that was just as shiny as his perfect skin. The grooves in Elian’s hands were deep, the lattice indents something interesting to follow whenever Elian was distracted in conversation with someone else. And Elian’s hands always smelled like his favorite hand sanitizer; Japanese cherry blossom. 

But that was just the memory who Elian was in Kash’s dream; scarily the same, but when Kash put his hand on top of the vinyl table, Elian didn’t reach out to take it. Elian moved a single hand to switch his drink from something steaming to something still ice cold. What Kash remembered felt real, as if the feeling was something he knew as well as he knew Elian himself.”

“Do you want it to be over?”

“What’s it?”

“High school I guess is what I mean.”

“It doesn’t matter what I want, it’s just what it is.”

“Fuck you, just answer a fucking question.”

“I did!”

“Well let me rephrase then. If you had ultimate control, would you keep this going or are you happy that it’s ending.”

“It’s a waste of my time wishing for something that’s already been decided.”

“Kash liked to sleep because it took him away. It forced him to forget about everything so terrible that he saw life as and it just let him be. And dreams, he hated them for that. But as he sat with Elian and his real life became closer to what his dreams were, the need for sleep moved slightly behind the need for him to be with the boy in front of him. 

Happiness was immeasurable for Elian just as it was the many great people to say before him. But he knew what happiness felt like and when he felt it. It was the easiest to feel happiness when consumed in something meant only to bring you great joy, but it was also the easiest to look back on that thing and remember it worse than what it was. To remember all the things he should’ve said or all the choices he should’ve made rather than the one that he did. 

Laying on Kash’s floor later in the night as Kash slept in his bed, Elian will not remember the happiness he felt in his heart after hearing the subtle words that fell so naturally from Kash’s lips. Instead, he’ll remember Kash’s words surely, holding them close to his heart, but he’ll think more about his reply, regret really what he didn’t say. “

“If this were a dream, Elian would have not apologized, instead he would have added something more that would have signaled for the table to be removed between them so they then could finally touch. But, that was the problem. So much did they measure their happiness on what the situation looked as being compared to a dream that they neglected to realize that even dreams have their own problems too.”

That’s the first chapter! Thanks for giving it a read if you’ve made it this far. The first chapter of this story is pretty simple and is a chill introduction to a story that is pretty quiet but becomes a whirlwind with the inner monologue of the characters. This chapter we spend a lot of time in Kash’s head, but the end of the chapter teases Elian’s thoughts which we will get more in the next chapter. I’m currently working on editing the next chapter right now so I hope to getting that post up sooner than later. Thank you all and good luck on your own writing adventures!

Get to Know Me!

Hi everyone! Since I have been wanting to get into posting on this Tumblr more, I decided that I should do a quick QnA so you can get to know me! I complied some questions from different places so I can give you a quick intro to who I am and how I write. If you don’t know already, my name is Addi and I have been writing seriously for almost three years now. I’m currently in high school and hope to seek publishing as soon as I graduate. I can’t wait to get posting more on Tumblr and I’m very excited to hopefully get involved in the wonderful writing community here!

What genre do you like to write the most?

Definitely realistic fiction. I love to tell stories about people that revolves around a certain realistic life event or situation and I can’t imagine writing outside of that genre but you never know!

What got you into writing?

I always loved writing in elementary school and I was always praised by my teachers for my writing and that was what really pushed me. I wrote my first “novel” (that I never finished) when I was in fourth grade and that was so fun to me that I never stopped. Everyone around me encouraged my writing and I just never stopped writing for fun, it wasn’t until 7th grade though that about taking writing seriously as a future career. 

Do you like to read a lot?

I love to read. Recently I found myself in a bit of a reading slump after I read the book, “A Little Life,” which took a lot out of me emotionally. I don’t read a crazy amount, but reading is one of my most favorite things and I’m always looking for new books to read. 

What motivates you to write?

Watching author tube really inspires me to work on my own stories, but movies are what inspires my ideas the most. Pinterest is also great and turning on one of my Spotify playlists always helps me get in the head space to write. 

Where do you like write?

Either my desk in my bedroom which is surrounded by plants and inspiring pictures or outside on my front porch swing in the summer. 

Do you plan on publishing one day?

Yes! For almost all my stories I plan on seeking publication for them and I’d love to be traditionally published someday.

Do you like writing descriptive scenes?

I love writing description. Depending on what book I’m writing, I always go back and fourth between whether I like description better than dialogue, but all my recent books have definitely turned out to be much more description heavy than dialogue. 

What is your favorite part about writing?

Honestly, my favorite part about writing is just the whole idea of making up characters and shaping a life around them that I’m in total control of. I always get attached to my characters and writing can just be the best escape sometimes. 

What is your least favorite part about writing?

My least favorite part of writing always depends on the day, but overall it is probably most often the planning stage because I always get extremely overwhelmed and never know where to start.

How many times per week do you write?

If I’m writing in a project consistently, it’s usually my goal to write a scene per day or a chapter a day depending on what mood I’m in. This means that I usually try to keep this up everyday in the week, but, obviously, this doesn’t always work out. My writing all depends on my schedule, if I’m in school or not for example, or it depends on what section of the book I’m in and how that may affect my mood towards writing. 

How many projects do you usually have going at once?

I have only ever written one book at a time, my brain cannot handle writing two different stories, but I can be writing a story and planning another at the same time because I do like to go from one story to the next as clean as possible. 

Are you a plotter, pantser, or planster?

I am definitely a planner while I write. I certainly wish sometimes that I could be a pantser because plotting can sometimes be too much for me, but planning overall helps me keep the story structure in tact and keep track of character development and story beats. 

How many books have you completed?

From the point that I’ve started to take writing seriously, I’ve been able to complete 7 novels. I plan on publishing my novel, “Everything Disappears Underwater,” first as I’m currently on my third round edits on it. My favorite novel I’ve ever written though is my novel, “Linc and Emilio,” so perhaps that will end up to be my first published story. I hope to make an “all about my novel” post for each of my novels so you all can get to know the characters and their stories that I love. 

What audience to wish to appeal to with your writing?

I hope I can appeal to a wide audience of different ages with my writing. I would say each of my finished novels all appeal to different audiences of interests, but I would hope anyone who loves to read might like to read my stories.

Sound Tracking My Novel: Linc and Emilio

Hi! I’ve left this account for awhile now but I’ve recently fallen into a writing slump and I’m trying everything to get myself back in and inspired. The one night that I was sitting in my bedroom trying to brainstorm new story ideas, I decided to revisit one of my favorite YouTube videos which is @coffeeandcalligraphy​ ‘s “Sound tracking my Novel” video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcLoxxTFilo ). I have watched that video probably 100 times now, I’m totally obsessed with not only that but all her other videos. I was inspired by this concept to soundtrack my own, completed novel under the terrible working title “Linc and Emilio.” I had so much fun doing this and it definitely helped me dive back into this story that I’m hoping to publish someday in the future!

The synopsis: Once each other’s best friend, Lincoln and Emilio’s relationship has been barely existent since Emilio left for college almost two years ago. Now, Emilio’s back in the town he grew up in as a result of getting his basketball scholarship terminated after plagiarizing a paper he couldn’t pull himself to write. Expecting a big welcome home, Emilio is what you can say underwhelmed. His brother isn’t the same child Emilio had known Lincoln to be, there’s something different about the kid who used to wear skirts to church and and painted nails to school. Emilio notices right away that not only has Lincoln just grown up, but something terrible has happened to change his sweet brother entirely. In an effort to re-earn his relationship with Lincoln, Emilio soon discovers that who really broke Lincoln was Emilio himself. 

(I’m going to include a one sentence summary for each chapter, but I’m going to try and avoid spoilers at the end) 

Unwelcomed Welcoming: Emilio is met with a rude awakening as he finally returns home (Song: “Idle Town” by Conan Gray)

Overused Memories: Emilio reflects on the person Linc used to be as a younger child, a little boy who wore dresses and loved makeup while Linc looks at the old photos with anger and disgust (Song: “Have You” by awfultune)

Four Act Structure: Emilio meets with his old friend from high school who reminds him about how good his life was before he went to college (Song: “Training Wheels” by Melanie Martinez) 

Children’s Giggles: Linc and Emilio are finally able to break their tension (Song: “Pluto Projector” by Rex Orange County)

I’m Addictive: Linc speaks to the reader about the life he’s created for himself and the struggle with his new persona (Song: “7 Easy Steps to Realize My Body is a Sin Puppet” by Got Trash?)

Talks of Yesterday Morning: Emilio reaches out to his girlfriend after ignoring her for weeks (Song: “Dirty AF1s” by Alexander 23)

A Museum Intermission: Emilio takes Lincoln to try out for the basketball team after a rough morning for the two of them (Song: “Listen to Your Friends” by Declan Mckenna)

Invitation for Forgiveness: Lincoln reveals his secret to his Emilio as it rocks Emilio’s view on life (Song: “It’s Not My Fault” by Briston Maroney)

The Lying Magician: Emilio tries to cope with his brothers issues while he blames himself for everything bad that has happened since he left for college (Song: Hunnie Pie by Zella Day) ((side note; this song is Lincoln’s song!! sorry he owns it))

Useless Repairs: Emilio attempts to “fix” his brother from home (Song: “Fix you” by Coldplay)

I’m Seeing Stars: Linc tells the reader of his current emotions as he is forced to continue with basketball where he meets a new friend (Song: “XNXX” by Joji)

The 2000s Resurfaced: Linc and Emilio go to church and are forced to confront repressed memories that leave them questioning their faith (Song: “HEAVEN” by Troye Sivan)

Tough Comings: Emilio sits with his father after an incident with Linc where the two men finally speak on their underlying issues that have been floating underneath the surface throughout the entire novel (Song: “Belvedere” by Scott James)

Heartache Relief: After an argument, Emilio takes care of Lincoln as though he is still the child that Emilio used to clean up after a beating that Emilio was not there to end (Song: “Dirt” by Jackson Wooten)

Pink Nail Polish: Linc opens up to Emilio about his relationship with his gender identity and sexuality which he has repressed due to the homophobic and conservative nature of where he grew up (Song: “She” by Harry Styles) 

Burnt Turkey: Emilio’s girlfriend comes to visit for Thanksgiving and, for the first time, their family feels normal, but something still feels wrong to Emilio (Song: “From the Dining Table) ((side note; in her video, Rachel said about how she felt like she wrote “Someone Like You” fanfiction, and for this chapter, this is straight up just “From the Dining Table” fanfiction and I never even meant for it to be hahaha))

My Final Notice: Linc tells the reader about his experience in the locker room at his basketball game (Song: “Shadowland” by Baby FuzZ)

Braindead: Emilio investigates his suspicions from Thanksgiving as he’s left to cope with the results (Song: “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles) 

The McBride Legacy (the epilogue): Emilio finishes the essay that got him kicked out of college at the beginning of the story (Song: “Let It Be” by The Beatles)

I totally exposed my obsession with Harry Styles within this soundtrack, but, oh well, it was bound to come out eventually. I love music and I love writing so this was just the best thing for me to spend my time doing. For this story specifically, I didn’t want to dive too deep into each chapter as I do plan on seeking publication for this story and, also, I did not want to get too dark as this story dives deep into some topics sensitive for some. For my other stories though, they’re a lot less dark and I hope to be sound tracking them to post on here too! I hope to start posting on this account soon because I’d just love to keep track of my writing and I’m obsessed with all the other writerblrs on here, so I’d love to join the community! It’s Done!

I finished my novel!

Hey, I feel like I need to introduce myself after being gone for sooo long, but I just wanted to pop in to share this exciting news. 

I’ve finished writing Linc and Emilio (which still doesn’t have an official title) just last night and the final word count is 65,416. 

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of work and I found writing was a nice distraction from the awful last weeks of school. My original plan was to finish the story by the end of June, but writing about 3,000 words per day had rushed the productivity tremendously. 

I’m in love with this story and I can’t wait to reread it after taking a break. I’m hoping to take about a month break before getting back into the story so I can look at it in different angles. Within this next month, my goal is to start developing what my next official writing project is. I’m thinking of writing something darker and different this time around, but we’ll see!

Overall I’m super excited that I finished this story in which I poured all my emotion out on. The characters are the love of my life and the plot is the thing I’ve been the most confident about all throughout my writing career. 

I’m so excited to see what’s ahead for this story and hopefully, I’ll be publishing another post soon about my whole writing process.
