R B Kitaj was a huge inspiration throughout this project. His work is very balanced compositionally but I think there is a certain tension to it, which comes from his use of a lot of different formal elements which feel like they are referential to totally different styles of image making. What I love most about his work is that it can be really hard to tell his prints apart from his paintings if you were to simply google his work. He uses so many different vibrant colours and textures, the sum of which always presenting a kind of process fluidity in my view. THe main thing that inspires me is the blend of graphical elements and organic elements in his work. Harsh edges balance out fuzzy ones, colours don’t seem to ever need to match a subject in any objective sense, and the images feel improvisational in tone. But still, a Kitaj painting always holistically feels quite calculated. The juxtaposed stylistic and formal elements feel very decisive even though there is still a sort of stationary looseness to the images.
