Visited: October 2016
Bean: Motown
Décor: New York High Line styles
Staff: happy, helpful, efficient
Coffee Temp: a little hot
Coffee Taste: first sip, unusual chemical taste, second sip, after added sugar the chems were gone and it was a woody bitter flavour
As I stepped in to the small crowded café I was immediately greeted and told to sit and someone would take my order. Which did not take long as staff continually bustled around, taking orders, topping up water and generally keeping an eye on things. Motown is a popular spot as evidenced by the number of occupied tables and the long queue at the counter.
The space itself is small bright and stainless steel, supplemented with an outdoor area looking out over Grosvenor St giving me the feeling that I was up much higher than I was. The glorious dappled light helped.
I did have to butter my own toast, but the slices were large and there was plenty of spread. The coffee was a little unusual. too hot for a first taste and a strange chemical flavour which disappeared after sugar but came back at the bottom of the cup (dishing washing liquid perhaps) but it as a minor inconvenience.
When I got up to leave a waiter followed me to the cash register so I did not have to wait for the 15 or so people who were lined up to order takeaway. Lovely spot, great service, will have to try again.

Bertoni Farrer Place
2/8-18 Bent St, Sydney

Visited: September 2016
Bean: Bertoni Blend Espresso
Décor: upmarket, New York style
Staff: Efficient and friendly, they seemed to enjoy their work
Coffee Temp: a little hot
Coffee Taste: first sip, a little burnt, second sip, milkyness took over, a smoky woody flavor and a hint of bitterness, like going to a BBQ and missing out on the last steak.
Some serious money has been spent setting up this latest edition to the Bertoni chain of eateries. And it has been well spent too in a very classy space which was frequented by well-heeled types form the big end of town. There is a coffee bar area and a separate restaurant for those looking for a more formal space
Service was fast and friendly and I sat in the café bar area watching a steady stream of customers. I can see why they kept coming as the coffee was excellent. My bacon and egg roll was nice, the fillings were done to perfection, I just don’t think it worked with the milk bun it came on. I think I will dress up next time I visit.

Visited: September 2016
Bean: unknown
Décor: happy friendly furnished on a budget
Staff: Excellent, very welcoming and friendly
Coffee Temp: good from the first sip
Coffee Taste: first sip, a little dubious, second sip, excellent, full flavored without being overpowering, just enough bitterness with no after taste
As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted with a hearty hello from the barista. He seemed happy enough yelling orders to the kitchen and constructing his brews. As I sat there quite a few regulars came in as he knew all their orders as soon as they walked in.
In one corner a young chap was sleeping off a big night, tourist from the nearby hotel rubbed should with solicitors from the local courthouses. It as s a friendly cozy space and reminded me of a dining room in a house that your friends have just moved into and furnished at fantastic furniture or IKEA.
The coffee was very good and a very good size, my bacon and egg roll came on Turkish bread and was quite good but not outstanding. Definitely a place I could go back to.

Visited: August 2016
Bean: unknown
Décor: Nordic/Japanese
Staff: Efficient seemed a little confused mixing my order up with the guys in the next table
Coffee Temp: Excellent
Coffee Taste: first sip, milky creamy, second sip, more of the same like being wrapped in a soft blanket
Long narrow almost minimalist space at the bottom of a high rise in a back street and surrounded by other sky rises. But I expect that’s what the locals like because although it is in constant shade the space seems light and airy. It was pretty busy when I visited and on the table next to me were ten guys in variations of blue check shirts and jeans, which was quite a sight.
The staff seemed a little confused mixing my order up with my neighbors then seeming to forget some of their order. However when it came out it was excellent, the bacon was crispy and delicious the egg was cooked well with just a little runny yolk. The coffee was marvelous and overall it was a peaceful place to have a breakfast

Staff: friendly enough
Temp: Good
Taste: first sip, Smooth, second sip, continued smoothness
Wank-O-Rama, I think this joint takes itself a little too seriously, but it was busy and always seems very popular. I sat at a communal table and listened to some advertising people argue the merit os infomercials, while other creative types drew in their moleskin notebooks. The coffee was excellent and the girl who served me was friendly and engaging, the rest of the staff not so much so. My bacon and egg roll was loaded with Kale which overpower the egg and bacon, there also seemed to be a lot of garlic on it.
Large Flat White: $4.50 except it's one size fits all

Nano Espresso
28 Albion St, Surry Hills
No website
Visited: August 2016
Bean: Toby's Estate
Décor: hipster/yuppie
Staff: friendly, efficient
Temp: Too Hot
Taste: first sip, too hot, second sip, too hot, it stayed hot for a while
Sort of tacked on the end of the Rydges hotel this little box of a coffee bar was bustling. Business men rubbed shoulders with delivery men while office women gossiped over tea and muffins. The staff with fast and friendly, the furniture was post industrial metal chairs and stools with a big communal table taking up most of the space.
The coffee was too hot and stayed hot for a long time. I needed sugar when I could drink it as it seemed bitter and sour, the downside being that the cup got sweeter the further down I got. My Bacon and Egg roll came with so many extra trimmings, tomato, spinach, cheese, and I think hollandaise sauce. Which made it quite tasty but more than I bargained for.
