Over the next few days, Iām going to share some recipes from the very rare and out-of-print Synergetic Stew: Explorations in Dymaxion Dining. š The first recipe for Snow Candy (scroll š) is from Bucky Fullerās friend, Neva Goodwin. āļøš¬SNOW CANDYš¬āļø Or: what do with your excess snow. āWaste is just a wrongly utilized resource.ā - Buckminster Fuller 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup molasses 1 stick butter 1 tbs vinegar 1 tbs boiling water A few grains of salt Combine all ingredients in a heavy pot. Stir. Heat to between 238 and 290F. (The hotter you make it the harder it will get.) Take the pot outside and dribble the mixture onto the snow in patternsā lines, dots, whatever. In a few minutes, when it is cool and hard, lift it with forks. Indoors, put it onto cake racks until any snow that came with it has dripped off. . N.B- Avoid YELLOW SNOW at all costs. #buckminsterfuller #synergetics #dymaxiondining #designandfood

The US is currently experiencing a dairy oversupply of unprecedented proportions: 1.3 billion pounds of cheese currently sits in cold storage. According to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, farmers dumped nearly 50 million gallons of unsold milk last yearāliterally poured it into the groundādue to the global decrease in the demand for dairy, along with decades of over-engineering cattle. The federal government had to bail out dairy farmers twice in 2016 by purchasing $20 million worth of surplus cheese. A marketing group called Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), created by the National Dairy Promotion Board in the ā90s (which farmers are legally obliged to sponsor) has been working overtime to create new cheese food stuffs, along with their attendant technologies, inserting cheese into places where itās never been before to support capitalās ever-expanding food production paradigm. DMIās innovations include Taco Bellās Quesalupa, McDonaldās switch from margarine to butter, Pizza Hutās Stuffed Crust Pizza and the #gotmilk? campaign. . Throughout the late sixties Fluxus artist Alison Knowles visited the same luncheonette in Chelsea at noon, and ordered the same meal. She came to think of the lunch as a performance, and published an event score, which reads: "The Identical Lunch: a tunafish sandwich on wheat toast with lettuce and butter, no mayo, and a large glass of buttermilk or a cup of soup was and is eaten many days of each week at the same place and at about the same time." Her friends were invited to participate in the performance by consuming her daily spread with her. Their range of experiences with the same meal pointed to the workās main philosophical gambit: in human experience, no object is identical to itself. š„Ŗš„ . Womanhouse, Dining Room, 1972 WomanhouseĀ was an immersive art installation, exhibition and performance space organized byĀ Judy Chicago andĀ Miriam Schapiro,Ā co-founders of the CalArts Feminist Art Program. When the newly formed program found itself without an adequate space in 1971, its students and teachers decided to relocate to a dilapidated mansion in Hollywood to critically explore the relationship between gender, housing and domesticity. The students renovated the house to build the Womanhouse installation, which had over 10,000 visitors. Pictured above are images from the Dining Room, created by Karen Lecoq, Robin Mitchell, Sherry Brody, Faith Wilding, Beth Bachenheimer, Miriam Schapiro. . #womanhouse #KarenLecoq #RobinMitchell #SherryBrody #FaithWilding #BethBachenheimer #JudyChicago #feministart #feministarthistory #artandfood (at Hollywood)

Isamu Noguchi and Buckminster Fullerās bromance began in 1929 when they met at Romany Marieās, a bohemian cafe in Greenwich Village popular amongst the intelligentsia. Constantin Brancusi had recommended Romany Marieās to Noguchi while he was in Paris working with the Romanian sculptor on a Guggenheim Fellowship. (Bruncusi liked to visit the cafe with Matisse, as one does.) Meanwhile, Fuller was a regular at Marieās, having designed the interior with aluminium paint and furniture in exchange for meals. One of his Dymaxion schemes (1929) was adapted as a hanging restaurant for Marie. Scroll to read Noguchiās and Fullerās accounts of their friendship which blossomed at the cafe.
