Social Media and Social Issues
Social media has been a tool that has become integrated and prevalent in society’s everyday life. It has started to have an even bigger and bigger role in politics and social issues in recent years. It is sort of a codependent relationship between social & race issues and social media. Social media is what brings light and attention to issues that are occurring in society, but these exact issues are what make social media useful and important. It has had a major role in politics in issues such as black lives matter or in anything related to the current president of the United States. Even he uses Twitter to promote his rhetoric, just like everybody else can. This has its own pros and cons. The reason why social media has become so important is because it has given the public the means to be aware, but most importantly, engaged with what occurs in society. That’s why platforms, like Twitter, have had the creation of social awareness campaigns like #BlackTwitter, #BlackLivesMatter, and #LatinoTwitter.

Any journalist tempted to use “intersectionality” without attempting to explain to an audience what those “intersections” are—and what the history of the term is—would be better served with another term, like the “overlap” of the issues at issue.
