my least favorite sphere of tumblr is the group of people who get really upset if you kill house pests like bugs and mice. very clear "never had to clean a home" behavior
#its always from users who've never had to live in unsafe accommodation who cant distinguish unconventional pets from literal infestations#its always the niggas glorifying rats slugs cockroaches ants etc on here#like its easy to call them cute and harmless when its a cutesy art post but the shits different when its in your home and making you ill#on top of ruining your things#suburb tumblr.... ughhhhhhhh#real

My issue with the Barbie movie and its stans is that they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want it to be a feminist 101 masterpiece which is universal story of girlhood and just a silly pink fun movie at the same time. End result is that's its just disingenuous
If Barbie was just a fun camp film then that would've been fine but they chose to make it a commentary on girlhood and womanhood. They chose to give it a feminist commentary. Its not unhinged for feminist women to then critique that commentary. Let's have common sense please.
If Barbie's gonna be feminist 101 and a story of girlhood then it does have the responsibility to try to incorporate the diversity of it. Leaving out masc & androgynous women and giving Issa Rae 3 lines isn't representing that girlhood. It still prioritises white cis femininity.
But again, Barbie has always centered conventional womanhood and femininity. So what's the easy fix here? Just leave the feminist commentary alone. Take out the 'patriarchy's and 'womanhood's and just give us fun and pink palettes for 1 hour like every other Barbie movie before
And if you want a feminist commentary, then no, sorry, 101 isn't enough. Generations of women in creative spaces have been digging deep into commentary on womanhood so the idea Greta with over a million in budget couldn't get beyond the basics just seems pathetic. Sorry.
Why is liberal feminism your idea of 101 feminism? Why is white cis feminine women talking about women on screen the 'safest' & 'easiest' & 'best' way to share feminism? No other marginalised group is doing "101" for their storytelling. Sinners had way more depth than racism 101
Also is intersectional feminism not a part of feminism 101? 'It's a movie about WOMEN it has nothing to do with race' Are the experiences of Black women not a part of feminism? What happened to 'abc is a feminist issue' and addressing the multiple ways which women are oppressed?
The fact that women who are Black, trans and/or gnc could never crit Barbie without being called bitter, haters or too woke even years on is why I only took the film at face value. I liked wearing pink at the cinema & the memes but its another reminder I'm a woman 'incorrectly'
The responses to Barbie and Barbie itself are just another reason why 'womanhood' and 'girlhood' don't feel like solid or relatable concept to me on its own. I have never 'just' been a girl or woman. I have to address those other factors. Even if my fellow 'sisters' don't like it
"But Barbie was *supposed* to be surface level basic feminism!!1" In a post Roe v Wade world with women's rights being stripped across the globe, "basic" feminism is not enough. It never has been. Call me a snob but womanhood media shouldn't be surface level.
Go big or go home.

I didnโt write this specifically about Ethel Cain, but it does sum up the reactions to her antiblackness and my response to when white/non Black celebrities and influencers are defended by their white/non Black fans. Purity is impossibility.
The idea of Black people being seen as human is seen as impossible for many.
