Tammy - 2014
Tammy wrecks her car as she hits a deer on the road, is fired by her boss because she is late for work and looks like a mess, comes home early and sees her husband having an affair with the neighbor. All these happening in one day spurs her on to leave town with her grandma, who looks like her mom (and her mom actually looks like her sister).
During her trip with her grandma, we learn that her grandmother was her bestfriend when she was younger, but unfortunately her grandma didn´t show up when she needed her. Tammy meets a man who likes her self confidence and the ¨excitement¨ she brings.
We started to think if Tammy is a little mentally disadvantaged because she doesn´t seem to be able to pick up social cues nor can sense danger very well (e.g. trying to give CPR by blowing air at the deer´s face; sitting on the roof of the car while is it spinning in circles by a semi drunk grandma; letting the ice cream man play with her boobs for attention and free ice cream; shouting at the bar after the music is gone; and of course, robbing a fast food chain instead of owning fault and asking money from her mom). Maybe it´s not her fault, given that the movie is supposed to be a comedy. However, when I compare Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider´s antics, Tammy is just not funny. Many situations are actually quite serious and point to severe mental and self-esteem issues. Tammy the movie lacks comical situations, and makes up for it with ¨comical responses¨ by the protagonist, so we are just not sure whether to laugh or wonder if Tammy is right in the mind.
Overall a feel-good movie, where an oversized, middle-aged lady finds happiness, love and motivation to trudge ahead in this ¨unfair´world.
On the plus side, it left a strong impression of how American people in the midwest might live, that we don´t see in much in social media.
Abraham says, ¨The actress is not very charismatic¨. I think he´s being very kind.
We give 3 stars, and don´t recommend the movie, unless you are looking to understand the midwest in the US. Although other documentaries like the Tiger King might be more informative.
