Today, I visited the ‘real’ Mugen Academy. Well, at least the two building that inspired the design, Sphere Tower Tennoz and Sea Fort Square. I’m happy to report nothing evil was going on.

There’s a lot of discourse going on right now re: cosplay elitism, comparing cosplayers who create their own costumes to those who buy them, and it’s really divisive and helping no one so I wanted to say something about it.  It’s fine to make your own costumes or buy them. If you’d like to try sewing, you don’t need to buy a sewing machine right away, or have a lot of money. I started out hand sewing with the cheapest fabric I could find to practice with. Everyone starts out not knowing what they’re doing. You eventually get better. The one thing that kept me going when I first started was how kind everyone was twelve years ago. No one made me feel bad about my costumes not being perfect. Everyone was really encouraging, and it made me want to work harder and improve, even though I was very poor and only made $5.15/hour at my job. So this costume in the photo? That was more than a day’s pay for me.  But it was worth it, because it gave me the opportunity to cosplay with my friends, and have fun, and feel like I was part of a community. To just be a nerd who loved comic books, in a safe space with kind people. I’m not seeing a lot of kindness in these discussions today and it’s really sad. I wish the cosplay community would be more welcoming to new people instead of making them feel like they have to be perfect, or spend a ton of money just to be accepted.

honestly i kinda wish they had stuck to their original plan and kept woz as the final villain. it makes so much sense that swartz was such a nothing bad guy and woz never had any kind of proper redemption/atonement arc, because they weren’t initially setting any of that up
it’d be cool if instead of being pure evil by the end, he had decided he Needed to turn against the team to ensure the future stays on its “correct” course and that sougo becomes oma zi-o. but even during the final battle, after all this talk of woz needing to be stopped no matter what, sougo’s grown too close to him to finish him off. after defeating him, sougo would extend his hand out to woz and tell him that he understands and it’s okay, bc that’s who sougo is, and that would be the moment where woz realizes he’s been fighting for someone who’s never cared for him, when he could’ve been fighting alongside a true friend
and then oma zi-o shows up and gets defeated by the power of friendship or something. i dunno, im just rambling off the top of my head here. the original arc probably still would’ve been some kind of mess because It’s Zi-O, but i still would’ve liked to see it more than swartz’s alternate universe nonsense

Oh wow, someone’s reading the Mighty Novel X stuff on a server I’m on and there’s some very interesting tidbits which like… retroactively kinda make sense, but also give Emu a… very strange characterisation. Like, it’s written by Takahashi, but it’s not canon, but man. It’s kinda wild.
Stuff like:
Parad is literally Emu’s personality as a kid. like, down to the disregard for life. He was not a happy kid.
Emu saw his dad precisely once, when he caught pneumonia and had to go to hospital.
In his house, every room except Emu’s is dirty because Emu doesn’t want to clean anything of his dads.
Emu doesn’t cook and lives almost entirely off of packaged/frozen food, so he loves hamburgers (and especially fresh ones).
His clumsiness is a habit from being a kid where he’d get himself injured so he could stay with the nice hospital staff.
The implication is that his “done with this shit” personality that turns up now and then is his “true” personality; he acts very nice towards people because he doesn’t like himself very much.
Some other random facts:
Kuroto compares Emu to a crystal not because of how he shines, but apparently because of how empty he is.
Parad has a fear of water after he was killed by Emu
Masamune deliberately didn’t allow Kuroto to have any social interaction and never taught him about failure, all to “bolster” his talent at game-making.

kamen rider’s thing of “the main character’s backstory has them engineered to be a weapon or tool or monster in some way but they escape and become a force of good against all odds“ is peak storytelling

like literally the core of kamen rider is "a monster that decided to be good". And some seasons including the original take that more literally by having the main character LITERALLY be a kaijin underneath there. And despite that underlying thing where they're supposed to be evil, supposed to hurt people and bring destruction and wreak havoc; they choose to be good and to love others and fight against their creators despite every single possible risk to themselves. And that's what Kamen Rider is

ok so this has been bothering me for like the longest time so sit down and please stop appropriating japanese culture. u may not realize ur doing it, so just take a second to listen. if any other japanese wanna add on to this post, feel free to do so. if u are not japanese, please do not try to defend ur ignorance or racism, rather listen and change ur behavior.
stop saying the word “jap” as a substitute for japanese. jap is a racial slur that was popularized in america after pearl harbor and all through the japanese internment. it’s not a shortened version of the word japanese like brits are to british. we are japanese, not japs.
acknowledge japanese imperialism. do not defend it. what the japanese did in ww2 was horrible, so make sure u know about it and use that knowledge to think critically about any japanese media u may consume.
stop japancore. japan is a country with a deep culture. my culture is not ur aesthetic.
on the same note of japancore, do not use shinto shrines as part of ur moodbaord. that is a religion still practiced to this day in japan. it’s not ur aesthetic. also realize that shintoism has been used as means to empower the emperor during japanese imperialism in ww2. they forced people into that religion and locked up those who didn’t comply. (it’s ok if u practice it ofc, just research and know what u are following)
again with moodboards, this is slightly more forgivable, but please don’t use japanese language for ur aesthetic. while i encourage anyone who wants to learn it to try and learn it, it’s not there for ur aesthetic. i can explain more on this if anyone would like, but i’ll just leave it at that for now.
do not self id as a weeb. being a weeb is incredibly harmful, as it dismisses many of the horrible things japan has done to asia. please read this post for more.
please do not support hetalia or aot. hetalia sort of glorifies japanese imperialism as well as nazism and makes it into this cutesy lil thing that makes u go “awww 🥰” at ww2. aot has antisemitic themes within it and again glorifies japanese imperialism.
if u are going thru with a name change, do not choose a japanese name that u found online after a google search. names in japan are more than just names, there’s a whole process that involves it that is dependent on ur time of birth as well as stroke count for the written name. additionally, it further appropriates the culture when a non japanese person uses a japanese name simply bc they found it cute. this also applies to online aliases. a name from ur own culture or language is good enough.
do not fetishize us. this goes for every culture and race but just stop. we are not “babies” and we are not here for ur entertainment. we are people too.
do not say i wish i was japanese.” don’t say that for any culture at all unless u are also prepared to face the years of oppression and racism that comes with it.
do not say we have privilege simply because japanese tend to have lighter skin to other poc. this can be said about many east asians countries as well. asia isn’t just pale skin, it comes in a multitude of shades as well as cultures from other countries. we do not have privilege because we do not benefit from the system like white people do.
i’m just done with racism going unnoticed because of ignorance. if u did/do any of these things, whatever. just realize how ur behavior has added to japanese racism and learn from it. further, please help stop anti-asian violence. i live near where an attack was done to an elder. please use these links to help asian lives.

I’ve been having trouble finding Canadian-specific resources, so for those of you looking for ways to support in Canada, please check out Butterfly in the link above. They’re a Toronto-based support network for Asian and migrant sex workers. They also have this linktree where you can learn more, get involved, and make a donation.

Escapism isn’t actually possible for everyone because of the nature of both fandom and the world around us. The best-worst example of the limits of fandom escapism? Racism.
Racism is global, and it infiltrates everything that we do; it’s close to inescapable offline, and it’s just as common online. Fandom is no exception.
About racism in fandom.
