Bazroph has consistently been my favorite for about as long as he’s existed. He’s a Swiftfell demon, based loosely off of falcons, and the kind that gets summoned as a curse given by their deity. Baz got summoned a total of once before he went directly against his summoner’s orders and, as a result, got kicked from Hell entirely and given a different curse, where he instead dies a lot but is kept from joining the magic, their afterlife.

He’s a funny little (for a demon, giant for a human) guy who’s on a quest to break his curse and return home, but, well, it’s not the easiest task when the one that cursed and banished you is a literal deity, and he’s also got too much compassion and curiosity for his own good, so he gets off-track a lot.

He’s acquired a number of bad habits since his time on Earth, such as eating too many apples for his carnivorous stomach, or asking the whole of magic for favors (many cultures have warning tales against this involving people getting turned into animals or other such permanent, undesirable effects). He leaves gifts for the magic and talks to it first, which gives him better results than others, but the only thing that’s kept him from becoming another warning tale is the curse that resets his body after every death.

Being a demon on Earth tends to be lonely when the only ones that people are any level of familiar with are under the control of summoners with ill intentions, but he’s found a few people who’ve helped him on his way. Namely the group that he travels with now in search of a dead mage’s hidden vault, with the living embodiment of the mage’s shed regrets to lead them.

It’s just about the anniversary of the first time I drew Bazroph in 2021, so here’s a redraw! It feels like I’ve been drawing him for so much longer hahah. I’m still having a hard time believing it’s just a two-year difference.

Here’s an older character I haven’t drawn in a considerable amount of time! I still love him dearly and I’ve changed a lot about him over the years, but his design has remained relatively consistent. One thing I keep noticing when going back to older characters is all of the little ways they tied to my queerness despite me being leagues deep in denial at the time. When I showed my mom this drawing she asked if he was me and it got me thinking about how similar we actually look today. Unintentionally, at least in the conscious sense, but I wonder how much of that was coincidence and how much was little me shoving all of the suppressed gender envy onto this guy.
