bug kai still exists TO ME . i like the idea of him still being slightly buggy because he was in that cocoon thing so it still had some sort of an effect on him . Like not outright bugged out but more like. really subtle bug features. And they aren’t enough to make anyone be like huh wtf but enough for people who know him best to think hmm something’s off here……..

Like his mouth opens a little too wide now. and his limbs are weirdly flexible . and now when in combat he prefers to crawl and keep close to the ground. he can walk backwards really well all of a sudden and he’s fast as fuck. his room light is always off and he hates it on. likewise he has the most energy at night

New headcanon: after monstrosity Kai got especially physically affectionate with his loved ones. He always was, but he’s upped it a lot. Constant hair ruffles for Lloyd. Not so subtly wiggling his way into Nya letting him do her hair. Using any and every excuse to hug his teammates. Lloyd, Nya, and Wyldfyre get hugged daily. He hugs Cole and Zane at every opportunity, and he has to fight the urge to tackle Jay into hugs too. The new ninja only know Kai this way and see him only as a big goofy teddy bear who knows how to lock in.

And on Kai’s end, whether he realizes it or not, it’s all because of that lake. He grows even more physically affectionate because the physical sensation reminds him that they’re real. Bone crushing hugs and the sensation of hair in his hands give him steady reassurance that this time it’s real. He focuses on the sounds of their voices, the vivid colors of their gis, how it feels when a teammate leans on his shoulder because all those little things tell him it’s really them.

And it’s not subtle. The team notices it. But nobody assumes it’s anything more than Kai really missing them during the merge because they know how much he loves them.

Guys Monstrosity was peak. I love Kai’s design and the dragon and the fire knights everything. Bangs head against the wall.

Also I drew the other ninja in the style in what I think could possibly be their legends series and gave up on Lloyd.

The biggest misconception in public schools is that literary analysis is about proving you can be right or wrong about a book you read

Kai’s hero complex never truly went away it just shifted a little bit to the left and now instead of being the main character he’s dedicated to being the best side character in everyone else’s story.

And the thing is? I don’t think people notice. I don’t think his family is gonna notice until it’s too late.

Like I guess, if I was to say where an arc for him would like to go is finding that balance between his protector role that gives him so much joy but also relearning how to…be cared for? I think if I was to socially analyze why people have gravitated towards monstrosity on a characterization level I think there is a part of us that wants to see how Kai deals with having to be selfish instead of selfless; to have to save himself over anyone else, to prioritize himself. That has almost become foreign to Kai, and us in relation to him as a character. He can be egotistical sure, but he’s not selfish quite anymore. Now he might have to be to be alive and that’s probably scary for him.

And idk the fucked up thing, is that I don’t really know who in in Kai’s head in Kai’s life he comes first in. Maybe he doesn’t think about it, but I do sometimes. And I don’t think it helps, he seems determined to mask any suffering from the land of monsters.

And maybe it’s silly. But, a childish part of me wants him to have his bride moment. Honestly, if I can be real I think that is what tickles me about Rusty’s existence. Like, Kai how does it feel to look at a creature whose entire existence centers around you and your goals forgoing his own.

THATS SUCH A GOOD WAY TO THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! He just channeled it in a totally different way, but some of the same sentiments are still there. I think he’s gotten better about his ego, but he’s still sort of seeking validation in a sense.

Oh anon…. Don’t do that to me. Dont you dare. It’s so normal to them, so typical of Kai, they don’t realize the harms it could potentially cause when taken too far (and if there was ever a guy susceptible to taking things too far, it’s Kai).

You’re literally cooking sooooooo hard with what you’ve said about Monstrosity. I didn’t even realize this, but you’re DEFINITELY onto something. Kai, especially post his main character arc, tends to be selfless. He’ll give anything and everything for his family/the ninja. And even earlier on, depending on how you interpret his and Nya’s childhood, you can see that selflessness there too. Yeah, he fucks up with the green ninja stuff, but after getting it together, he does tend to be quite selfless. But as you said, we’re now seeing him forced into an environment where he has to be selfish to survive. He has to think of himself. If he wants to survive, if he wants to see his family again, he has to put himself first. And depending on how monstrosity goes, that could very well mean putting his life above the lives or safety of others. I imagine this would be extremely scary for him tbh. I think he holds a lot of anguish over how he used to be in season 1, over how he put his desires above others’ safety. So to now be in a position where he has to put himself first, I think he probably does hold some fear of slipping back into that person he used to be. Kai was dangerously close to villainy (I mean look at Morro), and I think this could bring back old fears regarding this.

I’m very, very compelled by how he’s masked his suffering in DR. Even after all that he’s gone through, even though he knows his team has his back, there’s the implication there that Kai still feels the need to look out for them by not burdening them with his issues. I think emotional vulnerability is definitely a weakness of Kai’s; he’s so insistent upon being the support that he doesn’t know how to ask for it in return. He gives but doesn’t know how to receive.

GAH NO YOURE REAL FOR THIS!!! I have some half-baked ideas, but I’m dying to see Rusty’s exact connection to Kai and the fire masters. Whatever is exactly happening, he seems to have a real dedication to Kai. And same with Daidan for that matter, just in a different way. Like, I’ve never been in camp “Kai never gets anything” because he was the protagonist for a significant portion of the show. But in universe, on a less meta level, he has ultimately always been the sidekick and support. He’s OUR protagonist for several seasons, but in universe he’s very much so Lloyd’s support and tends to play a support role. He can step up, step in, take charge when the time calls for it, but it’s not necessarily what he does by default.
