what i would like to see in season 2 (and 3 tbh) of high school musical: the musical: the series

nini goes to YAC. she has to do it or all that she has been preaching about being her own person and not being so boy-dependent during season 1 will be even more in vain. she leaves but she and ricky decide to try long distance, because they just got back together and don’t want to lose each other again so soon. although he doesn’t say it to her or show it when they talk/facetime, he is devastated. he is lost. he needs someone to understand what it’s like and the only person who can do that is gina, who is so used to moving all the time and is now back at east high, staying at ashlyn’s. at first he is a little bit reluctant, as he was in the season finale, because he doesn’t trust people to come back in his life, he’s one of those “everyone always leave” kind of person. after a while though he lets her back in, because he needs her and because she doesn’t stop trying to be there for him, because she knows. and they bond over that like, a lot. they become closer and closer, they hang out all the time, and gina slowly starts to catch feelings for him (or better the feelings she already had but pushed back to make him happy at the end of the first season grow deeper). she doesn’t say a word until they perform in the musical and she realizes she can’t hold it anymore: she goes to find him and tell him how she feels but finds out that nini is back, like for good. so she gives up, this time for real, which leads to gina finding a boyfriend in season 3. seeing them together and being actually back with nini makes ricky realize that he doesn’t love her anymore and the girl he actually has feelings for is, in fact, gina.

meanwhile, kourtney and ej, who are the leads of their rendition of beauty and the beast, bond and find comfort in each other - and eventually fall in love - over nini’s departure. but when she comes back, she kinda bursts their bubble and angst between the two ensues, as well as a rocky relationship between nini and kourtney, which ends up in the latter finally standing up for herself. nini will have a little bit of a hard time between this and her relationship with ricky but it’ll be what she needs to finally find herself and be who she really is.

i don’t mean this in an offensive way or to discredit what you said, it’s just my honest opinion, but you know what else would be - to quote your own words - realistic, revelatory, groundbreaking, fresh and all that? a couple of teenagers who realize they are not meant to be in a romantic way but can still remain close friends and share the connection they used to have (which doesn’t just go away) because they care deeply about each other and want to be there for each other. it would be a story of self-discovery, self-empowerment and growth, rather than the classic and yes, in my opinion, cliche-y love story. now tell me, where else does that happen? 

I keep reading a lot of people that Rini is a cliche but I honestly don’t see it. I don’t see what would make people believe that they’re a cliche. What do you think?

I think if you look at the skelton dynamic you might think it’s a cliche? Boy and girl are dating, break up because the guy doesn’t want to get serious, girl tries to move on, guy wants her back once he loses her.

But there are so many LAYERS to that story that completely change the framing of it all.

Teen shows so rarely give such interesting, complex motives for their characters actions. That’s what I love about this show—there’s depth everywhere you look for it, and that’s so valued and appreciated by me.

Ricky couldn’t say I love you because of his parents (divorce affecting a child in their everyday life—depth)

Nini tried to move on because he couldn’t be honest. (Miscommunication—typical for a show, but still realistic)

Ricky NEVER moved on, but actually KEPT HIS DISTANCE as she dated someone else and gave her the space she needed when she told him no. (Not pressuring the girl or actively trying to win her back with the exception of joining the play which he did before he realized she wasn’t playing and also it quickly became more than just about Nini).

Ricky wanting Nini back had NOTHING to do with EJ, he wanted her back before he even knew they were dating (a teen guy not using jealousy to drive his actions—NEVER happens)

The fact they rise above it as friends in the moments that matter (being genuine friends beyond just a ploy to date each other—revelatory)

Nini being jealous seeing Ricky with Gina but going out of her way to bond with Gina anyway and be there for her, because she’s hurting, and none of it is Gina’s fault (teen girls not being pitted against each other in a teen show—groundbreaking)

Nini and Ricky having countless arguments but none of them are ever taken to an unhealthy or toxic place (two teens not saying the worst possible things to crush each other for selfish impact but having healthy conflict that is still interesting—FRESH)

Nini not taking Ricky back right after she dumped EJ because that won’t solve their problems (a girl wanting a boyfriend badly but refusing to get back into a relationship she doesn’t trust and instead staying alone and figuring things out in due time—WHERE ELSE DOES THAT HAPPEN?)

my thoughts on the rina/rini situation (not that anybody cares)

i ship rina and i don’t like nini. this had to be said.

regardless of either of these things, i truly believe that making rini endgame would be the wrong move. not only because it’s the easy and predictable route and frankly quite boring (and with what i’ve seen so far i trust the writers enough to do better, even though it’s a disney show), but because it would be so important to teach kids and teenagers, which are ofc the main demographics of the show, that:

a relationship can fail and it’s okay.

even though the heartbreak from said failed relationship seems unbearable and it feels like the end of the world, it is not and you will find love again.

it’s okay to move on.

and finally that exes can still care about each other and be friends.

although we might want to believe it, more often than not our first love doesn’t last. let’s not further fill kids’ heads with unrealistic expectations about love and give them something they can relate to and learn from.

And you think ten episodes is enough to end a perfectly happy marriage and for Jeid to work through going from only best friends to lovers? Don’t be ridiculous, this is all jeid shippers are saying because they can’t handle spencer being with someone else and throw around “ten episodes isn’t enough” if it’s enough for Jeid to happen whilst JJ is still married by the way it is definitely enough time for Reid to get a GF.

i never said that ten episodes is enough time for jj to end her marriage and get with reid. i said that if he has to be with someone at the end, the only one who would make sense is jj, and that is purely because they have a strong connection (one that you say is only of best friends while for me is more than just that, but they’re just different opinions) that goes beyond just ten episodes, that’s what i meant. no new character could develop a stronger bond in that amount of time. if you want to use my words to throw shit at me at least don’t twist them

so that rumor that came out a few days ago about spencer finding and i quote “a fairly significant love interest” and this not being jj during the final season is complete bullshit. not because the only possible love interest for reid is jj (well yes) but because he’s such a complex character and it wouldn’t be fair to him to give him this storyline in just ten episodes, part of which we know for a fact is going to focus on clarifying (whatever that means) jj’s confession in the finale. ten episodes wouldn’t be enough for a regular character to find love let alone spencer reid, which is why i think that if they want to give him a love interest, it has to be jj. because it’s the only thing that would make sense (otherwise what’s the point of jj’s confession if he’s going to find someone else anyway? they could have just avoided it instead of creating a whole mess) and do him justice. if they don’t want jeid to happen, then leave spence alone.

so many people is saying “poor will” after the season finale but honestly why isn’t anyone thinking of jj? i mean i love the man don’t get me wrong but if she really meant what she said to reid (and let me stress if because at this point no one can say it with certainty) can you imagine how hard it must have been for her to keep a thing like that secret for so many years? working so close and spending so much time with the person you love without being able to tell them because you’re scared, and because you know you’d hurt someone else, someone you love, because of course she loves will. the whole situation is so fucking complicated like she actually said and attacking her without even wondering for a second how hard it must have been for her is just crazy and unfair. she does realize everything you’re judging her for or she wouldn’t have said the things she said. you might disagree with the writers’ decision if this is really the direction they’re going (again, if) but you can’t shit on jj or the entire show for this. c’mon.
