tgcf mutual: no one understands the Character.
mdzs mutual: today i blocked 5 people in the Character tag. i'm starting to suspect no one in this fandom can read.
svsss mutual: today i spent 6 hours brainstorming new ways for Character and Character to fuck nasty. here are the results.
#svsss#mxtx#accurate#tempted to start using a distinctly svsss attitude during unpleasant mdzs fandom interactions lol

I feel like some people in MDZS fandom haven't experienced many morally complex characters--or maybe they're only willing to give leeway for a morally complex character if that character is the protagonist?
But even in the case of WWX, a lot of people become very upset if you say he's morally gray, so...
Anyway, I've noticed a number of people in the MDZS fandom seem incapable of empathizing with anyone but Wangxian. Or when they do seem to empathize with other characters, they're "good" characters like Wen Ning. And even then, a lot of people don't seem to get how horrific Wen Ning's situation must be--possibly because they feel like it reflects badly on WWX?--so it's a very selective sort of empathy where they understand some things but not others. Or maybe they just aren't interested in delving too deeply.
I also get the impression from some people that if they think a character is "bad" enough, their empathy automatically clicks off.
Like they think the character no longer "deserves" their understanding or any sympathetic feelings, like, "I've decided it's not worth the effort to try and understand where this character is coming from or how they must feel because they're Bad."
In my opinion that's just doing themselves a disservice by missing out on a significant part of the story--but I get the impression that some MDZS fans don't really care about anything outside of Wangxian, so maybe they just aren't interested.
Also, while I'm in a posting mood, I will just say, there seems to be an incredibly skewed view of how much leeway people are willing to give JGY.
I've discussed it multiple times, but, in-world, the only person who's willing to really hear JGY out and consider his situation is LXC. LXC does this consistently throughout the narrative, and, as we see repeatedly, it is not blind faith, but rather LXC being the only one willing to take circumstances into account, which he does as early as responding to NMJ about what happened at Langya, and as late as the explanations in the temple sequence. This is grace, but not a great deal of leeway, as especially in the latter part of the book, LXC is quite tough on JGY, it is just that he remains the only one willing to actually listen and look at the whole situation. No one else will do even a fraction of this for him, and the "sob story" he is often criticized in fandom for making use of is actually functionally useless, as, in the narrative, his background makes him an object of ridicule rather than one of pity.
This brings me to how much leeway JGY is given in fandom spaces and, having been around them for quite some time, the answer is: not a lot. As I have said before, JGY is a difficult character, and obviously no one is under any obligation to like him, but the amount of grace extended to him by fandom at large is vanishingly small, especially given the context of the narrative and its characters, and it is much more likely that any given fan of the material will echo the sentiments of the gossips at the end of the book than, like LXC, seek to look at the whole picture of JGY and to understand his reasons.
It seems that, to many, it is unacceptable for there to be anyone at all, whether it be LXC in-world, or those of us who find JGY interesting in fandom, who wants to look at the full situation and at JGY as more than just his worst moments, and any attempt to discuss any kind of context becomes a sweeping statement of giving JGY all possible leeway and excusing everything.

Liu Qingge will never be in peace I believe
+ Liu Mingyan sketch !

[ID: A Scum Villain comic. Liu Qingge asks, "Mingyan-mei, are you there?" Liu Mingyan looks up from her desk, revealing she's drawing Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu sloppily making out (in the style of a meme). Liu Qingge looks tired and judgemental.
The sketch is screenshotted from a drawing software and shows Liu Mingyan sitting at a desk with a book in front of her and holding a brush. End ID] described by @nebulations

In fairness to CQL!Nie Mingjue, he lives in a world where what music you're playing has absolutely zero connection to what your hands are actually doing. If you are good enough at music you can summon invisible musicians playing instruments that sometimes don't even exist yet to back you up. Wei Wuxian can play wangxian on a leaf. For all da-ge knows this just happens sometimes.

#the sheer number of pairings this is correctly tagged with…#Wangxian (corpse is third-wheeling and cool with it)#Xiyao (corpse is third-wheeling and mad about it but also definitely also an official part of the relationship)#Xuexiao (someone is third-wheeling but the corpse is adamant that it’s not him!)#and many more if you put your mind to it!
Accurate tags are accurate.

triangular relationships… to me

THE SCENE: Your students present their cumulative projects at a school event. Visitors have the option of writing complimentary notes for the student presenters. After going through the notes afterward, you discover that a handful of kids did not receive any. This is not indicative of the quality of their projects and has no bearing on their grade.

genuinely being a tv enjoyer in this current time sucks balls because tv is trying to do what movies do and it makes it WORSE. the best part about tv is that you spend time with it consistently week after week year after year and now because tv shows are fractured and have the budget of major movies they're becoming shorter with way longer time between seasons and it hurts the one (at least to me) best thing about tv!! which is that it's reliable and consistent and has longevity because tv is a long form format!!! But it's being pushed into being made more short term like movies because of all these economic pressures and bonkers expectations. I'm sick of it!!! I'm sick of tv shows being acclaimed when they don't feel like tv shows as if that's a bad thing!!! I'm sick of waiting 2-4 years for 4-8 episodes. I'm sick of reading about the best writers in the business not being able to make a living. I'm sick of it!!!! I want tv back!!! I miss my friend tv!
#this is why I barely watch American tv anymore#the Netflix formula does not work for everything#and their formula has actually changed and been getting worse and worse#they've literally admitted to dumbing scripts down so people scrolling on their phones can still follow along easily#they also alter OG source material of adaptations to water it down and make it as uncontroversial as possible#and to give as much broad generic appeal#and it seems like a majority of streaming services are taking a page out of the Netflix playbook#anyway if y'all haven't been watching Korean or Chinese tv you need to get on that#especially if you like crime shows historical dramas and fantasy
