Top Tips To Prevent Dognappers From Stealing Your Pup!
Tumblr media
Cats and dogs are stolen for two main purposes; to be sold on for their high monetary value ( people will pay exorbitant prices for dogs that look a certain way) and for the cash reward given after finding the pet. Dogs may also be taken as “bait dogs” to coach fighting dogs
Losing your dog is a terribly upsetting situation.
We can however make it difficult for the dognappers by taking into consideration the following suggestions:
Teach your dog good recall. Training your dog to recall or come is the most important command to teach your pup to obey. If your puppy has poor recall set her up for success by spending time playing some brain games with them at home to develop their intelligence. Use an extended lead if they are not good at coming back when you call them.
Make sure your pup is microchipped. Ask your vet to scan your dog annually to check where the chip is. Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with current I.D tag at all times
Having your dog spayed or neutered makes them less attractive for the purpose of breeding. Put this on their ID tags to discourage thieves.
Make your house look like it doesn’t have a dog. Remove any signs and car stickers that say that you have dogs. Any dog toys around your backyard should be taken in to make it look like there are potentially no dogs. Thieves have been known to mark out target homes with dogs they want. Look out for unusual markings or symbols around your property.
Be watchful of strangers asking odd questions about your pet particularly anyone taking photos, filming, or asking specific questions about your pet’s age, health conditions (female dogs are sometimes preferable since they have the potential to breed). Some may genuinely want to know but those people could be potential dog thieves. You will notice they are at the park at the same time as you; it’s no coincidence.
When sharing photos of your dogs, avoid tagging your location, social media posts may give clues to your location and daily habits.
Have recent photos of your pup showing any unusual markings or details that set your pup apart — and note them down. Images like this help people identify your puppy quickly.
Update your address and phone number if you move house — it’s how owners are contacted if a lost or stolen dog is found.
Be less Predictable. Try altering your route and the time you walk your dog. Look for safer locations where you see all around you and your dog. Buddy up with someone else in spite of the current restrictions, as long as you keep a safe distance apart. Also, pay attention and keep your phone away during these walks. Thieves tend to target people who are preoccupied.
Teach your puppy to ‘wait’ before you say it’s OK to eat something — this habit makes it difficult for the thieves to lure your pup towards them with treats before stealing them away or simply clip a lead to the collar and take off.
Don’t leave them outside a shop unsupervised. It takes a second to untie or cut the pup’s leash and walk away. Also, avoid leaving your dog in an unlocked parked car or one with windows rolled down that the dog can be removed.
In the event your dog is lost or stolen, it’s important to act quickly and report to the police. Making sure your dog is correctly reported as stolen and not lost.
Consider taking an online self-defense class, it improves your street awareness and helps with knowing how to respond when under attack.
