OMFG Why is this dom/sub/soft/whatever Levi discourse still going on? I've stayed out of it, but too many moots are getting hateful anons, and it's disgusting. So, let's try something different.
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT. This will be an analysis post that deals with NSFW topics, and I respectfully disinvite you from reading.
So, let's get some preamble out of the way. I am a self/mutishipper. Why does this matter? Because of bias. While I will be using analysis to the best of my ability to eliminate bias, everyone has bias. It would be irresponsible of me not to acknowledge that. That said, if you come at me with "you're just biased" and no actual good argument as to why, I'm going to ignore you. As should anyone else.
Next, and because people lack reading comprehension sometimes, I'm going to write the next part in big ass colorful words:
I don't care about fanfics or headcanons. This post is not addressing those.
Whatever floats your boat, I don't give a shit. This addresses likely canon only. DO NOT use my post to harass fanfic writers and artists. They are free to write/illustrate whatever they want. DO NOT use my post to harass people who disagree with me. They are free to disagree. I don't care.
Let's get on with it.
Aro/Ace Levi:
I believe there is a strong case for Levi being aromantic, asexual, or both. It is canon that Levi doesn't show any romantic or sexual tendencies. (This is not a post about ships. I will ignore those.) It is also correct to say Levi actively avoided close relationships. (ANSWERS Guidebook page 168.) He may not be interested in romance or sex, he may be uncomfortable with it, whatever the reason. We just know that in canon, especially during his time in the Scouts, we see nothing on screen or in the manga. Interviews or character interactions about/with Levi are often vague, with most being dismissive about Levi's sexual preferences or interest in romance.
Vanilla Levi
I can see merit in the argument that if Levi was interested in sex, it would be vanilla. Vanilla is not a bad thing or boring. We know Levi is a kind, compassionate, selfless character. Yes, he is blunt and grumpy. Yes, he is awkward with niceties to the point of almost non-existence. He is also very aware of it. Even apologizes for it.
There may not be very many words here, but this is a time when it would count. Levi knows when it counts. He would be a selfless, attentive, giving lover. No, you probably won't hear nice words. You won't need to. Yes, it'll probably be awkward with his mannerisms. You'll understand.
Dom Levi
Okay, here is where we're getting into a lot of the fucking discourse. Could Levi be a dom? What is a dom anyway? I find a lot of confusion on what a dom is, so let's define it using the circles that actually call themselves that.
A dom is a person who controls a sexual encounter or seems to (more on that in a second). Doms, including those in the BDSM community, will often be commanding. They may use things like spankings, degradation, praise, toys, demands, etc. A dom is paired with a sub.
IMPORTANT FUCKING INFORMATION: A dom/sub relationship is based on total and complete consent from both parties that can be withdrawn at any time! Two consenting adults that agree to boundaries beforehand. Not every dom in into choking. Not every sub likes degradation, etc. This is where the power of the sub comes in. A sub can stop an encounter at any time. A dom must listen, or this turns into noncon/sexual sadism.
So, could Levi be a dom?
I think it's possible in this context. And since I know some of you might run off to those I know disagree with me, let me emphasize that I don't think it's likely that he would be a dom. I just can't rule it out.
Why?
Whether you are of the opinion that Levi suffered first hand or second hand sexual abuse, I'm here to clarify that it's still possible to become a dom in those situations. I know a few very empathetic, very compassionate people who suffered repeated sexual abuse that are now doms. They are very aware of the feeling of having their consent taken away, and consent is very important to them. To feel comfortable in sexual situations, they need to have the "lead." It's how they are able to feel enjoyment in sexual acts.
I'm not saying that Levi did, in fact, suffer sexual abuse. This is just to cover if someone is of the opinion that he did.
I feel like I have to say this again. A dom is someone who takes consent very seriously and has boundaries of their own. People who have suffered abuse can become doms. I can't rule out a dom Levi. Abused or not.
Sub Levi
Here is another part of this damn discourse. Can Levi be a sub? What is a sub anyway? A sub is a person who is paired with a dom, obviously. While they have the true power during encounters (they can stop them at any time), this is a person who generally gives up control to the other person. It should go without saying that a person who has been through sexual abuse can absolutely become a sub in order to find enjoyment in sexual encounters. So, yes, Levi could be a sub if you are of that opinion.
Just like a dom, I don't think this is likely, however. I just can't rule it out. There are plenty of people who seem to be in control all the time in every aspect of their lives who are subs.
Which brings me to:
Sexual sadist. You might remember I mentioned this in the dom part.
Sexual sadist Levi:
Oof. Where to begin on this one. Let's just keep going like I have been. What is a sexual sadist? Could Levi be a sexual sadist?
A sexual sadist is a person who has no empathy for their partners. They often enjoy inflicting pain and humiliation regardless of what their partner wants or likes. There is no consent involved. They don't care. This is noncon.
And no, I don't think Levi, in any capacity, would canonically be a sexual sadist. Based on his character, one rooted in empathy and compassion (Inside, Outside, ANSWERS, The Character Encyclopedia, canon, fucking everywhere), this is the direct antithesis of sadism. Levi is too attached to the idea of people having their own agency. He is too selfless for this kind of selfishness. While I can see merit in arguments for any of the others I mentioned, I can not see any argument here for a canonical sexual sadist Levi. There are no interviews, no guides, and no material to support this.

Thursday – Mini Analysis Post
Topic: “Levi’s Calm Isn’t a Lack of Emotion — It’s Mastery Over It”
Scene: Season 1, Episode 9 — Levi’s battlefield entrance and interaction with the dying soldier.
Levi enters the battlefield not with rage, but with terrifying calm. He slaughters titans with precise, inhuman control—no wasted movement, no noise. And then, just as easily, he kneels beside a dying soldier. The boy is afraid. Bleeding. Calling out for meaning. And Levi doesn’t dismiss him. He crouches, listens. Tells him, “Your comrades did not die in vain.” Tells him, “I’ll kill them all.” What this shows is simple: Levi’s control is not the absence of feeling. It’s feeling everything and choosing not to collapse. He doesn’t break down because he can’t afford to. Because when others are falling apart, he has to be the last one still standing. He doesn’t comfort with softness. He comforts with presence. With truth. With action. That’s the kind of man Levi is. Not cold. Just carrying too much to show it.

Holy shit, this bullshit again. If you think Levi's power is his only redeeming quality, you've lost the plot. This is such a shallow take on his character.
Also, insinuating disabled people are better off dead. 🤢
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crashing out on Tumblr.com again because I keep seeing this garbage take everywhere I turn. Normally, I don’t care what other people’s opinions are—but this one is actually harmful far beyond just being an opinion on a fictional character. So.
I, for one, am immensely happy Levi made it out alive, regardless of his physical state. His character has so much more depth than just his physical abilities—his strength isn’t what makes him a “man,” and it’s not even on the list of why he’s my favorite character.
I’d like to think that rather than feeling depressed and lonely, like some people assume he must be, he feels fulfilled. At peace. Free of a life of fighting.
He can rest knowing his friends’ and comrades’ sacrifices weren’t in vain. He kept his word to carry out his duty until the end and made choices he’d regret the least, like he promised. He discovered the truth for Erwin, kept going for Hange, and looked out for the squad he’d known since they were kids.
He gave everything he had left, no matter how bleak things got, no matter what it would do to him physically, no matter the sacrifices it would cost—that’s the kind of selfless, loyal, caring person he is. And still, on the other side of it, he’s looking out for others and helping. Those are the traits that measure someone’s strength and character.
Him dying wouldn’t have been more honorable than that. You could never, ever convince me otherwise.
If you can’t see beyond shallow, outdated views of masculinity and strength, I feel sorry for you. If you think living disabled means living a sad life, I think your life is much sadder. Look in a mirror, ask yourself why.

Hello, loved that levi ask and what you said is what i believed since bad boy came out, however there's this piece of information from isayama from his autograph session in 2018 he says :
Q: Kenny said he will never go to a brothel. Does Levi think the same way?” Isayama: “Because it’s an environment that Levi had been part of since childhood, it seems like he considers prostitution as just another ordinary job.”
I have a hard time seeing how this fit or maybe isayama changed his mind? What do you think?
This ask is in reference to this post.
Hi, anon, thank you for your ask! And thank you for your kind words. I’m glad I was able to verbalize some of your own thoughts.
You know, I’ve seen this quote referenced several times, and I also find it interesting. Now, I don’t speak Japanese, so I can’t entirely speak to (1) the accuracy of the translation and (2) the nuances of Isayama’s intended meaning and phrasing. But, based on how I interpret his words, I don’t think they contradict the idea that Levi may have experienced trauma related to the environment he grew up in.
When I read that quote, I interpret it as Levi not judging people who engage in sex work, not that he views the industry as entirely harmless. Growing up in the Underground, prostitution was likely one of the few options available for survival—especially for women like Kuchel. Levi knows that. He saw it firsthand. I think Isayama is saying Levi doesn’t look down on sex workers or moralize their choices because, to him, sex work was part of the economic reality of poverty. It was common. It was normalized. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t also exploitative, violent, or traumatizing; it just means Levi is able to recognize the systemic forces that put people, including his mother, in those positions. And crucially, it means he directs any judgment or anger toward those systems, not toward the people trapped within them.
We know, for example, Levi deeply respects his mother. He holds Kuchel in the highest regard; he honors her memory, seeks to remember her, and he never speaks about her with bitterness or shame (he even sees her as elegant). But that respect doesn’t mean he was blind to the toll her occupation took on her, or on him. Levi understands what poverty and desperation can do to people. So it’s entirely consistent that he would view sex work as “ordinary” in the sense of “commonplace” or “survival-driven,” while still recognizing the harm and coercion often embedded in it.
Those ideas aren’t mutually exclusive. You can have compassion for the individuals involved, even as you criticize the system that exploits them. And Levi, more than most characters, is capable of holding those two truths at once.
Also, it’s important to recognize that Isayama’s comments outside the manga often reflect a broad, neutral stance. He tends to give room for multiple interpretations and has admitted before that his thoughts on characters evolve over time.
