Just came home from watching Weapons and already people are calling it homophobic bc the gay couple dies

Spoilers below

I swear to god some of you cannot make up your minds about what you want from queer rep. You say you want wholesome stuff like Heartstopper, but then call it corny. You say you want toxic dynamics like Interview with a Vampire, but express fear that it’ll make the alt right hate you even more. You say you want queer people to stop being villainised in horror movies and treated the same as other characters but get upset when they die gruesomely bc it’s a *gasp* horror movie! The one genre where characters are guaranteed to die!

“But the only person of colour is depicted as a violent monster who hunts down a white woman!” Firstly that stereotype is often used on black men, not east Asian men. Secondly the movie makes sure to portray marcus in a likeable and sympathetic manner before this part so if their intention was to make the audience hate the only person of color in the movie then surprise they failed (also do you really think Benedict Wong would take the role if he thought it was racist? Don’t sit there and act like you know better, he’s an adult not a baby who needs coddling)

Don’t even get me started on you guys swearing up and down that Gladys is disabled even tho it’s made very apparent that she’s a witch feeding off the kids’ souls to stay alive. Yes the unattractive old woman (aka psycho biddy) is a worn out trope in horror and I do criticise the movie for that but considering Alex is the emotional center and it’s made apparent he doesn’t feel comfortable with a stranger moving into his house (like any child would), it makes sense she’s not presented in a flattering light. If you’re a small child and you meet someone new who says they’ve known you since you were a baby, obviously you’re gonna be freaked out and think they’re scary!

If you watched this movie, that has heavy themes of how the systems in power are run by immoral incompetent people and have repeatedly failed the children they’re meant to protect, and your only takeaway from that is “ermm the director is a violent homophobe, misogynist and racist and should be executed by firing squad :)” please go back to watching braindead action movies I implore you.

If you're going to enjoy an innocent child character being tortured and ignore his trauma because you find it fun to hate him for the crime of WHATEVER THE FUCK you've crafted in your mind... get off of social media and go to therapy!

Hating a character just because you "want" to hate them, while ignoring the character's trauma, doesnt make you cool and it is definitely not a trend or shit, it just show how simple minded you are.

i would ignore this but i had to see it in my notifs because they insist on using MY gifs

"are we just not going to talk about" as if you are the first and only person to notice this. and "this is huge foreshadowing" yeah of mike telling her he loves her. as the season (and season three !) was building up to. she's upset. maybe it's a callback to the whole 'give him his own medicine' thing from season three. it's not her suddenly deciding, oh, maybe i don't love him anymore lmao.

also owens literally told her there was a chance they could fail and she'd never see her friends again. saying 'from' instead of 'love' could be her way of letting him off the hook, since she's in the headspace of the two of them not being on the same page.

and you are justifying my theory that a concerning amount of you must be watching an entirely different show. this is the second time mike has tried to tell her he loves her on his own only to get interrupted. also, "mutual breakup" when she's saying she missed him, wearing the ring he got her, giggling over his silly antics. and mike looks elated hearing her say she missed him because he's been worrying this whole time that she might not want to be with him at all, that he isn't enough for her.

you all hate the monologue so much that you clearly don't listen to what he's saying at all, or have to tell yourselves that it was a lie. as if he would do that to her.

we have the official script. it was publicly released.

mike is freaking out because he can't help her. but it's literally his voice, his words, his love that helps her find the strength to fight back and to save max.

El hears Mike's voice, echoing faintly through the mindscape. Her eyes flutter as she fights to hold onto consciousness.

Mike tears up as El seems not to hear him. But --

Mike looks back down at Eleven. His determination builds. He squeezes her hand.

MIKE El… I don’t know if you can hear this… but if you can… I just.. I want you to know… That I’m here… I’m right here… and… (beat) I love you.

El's eyes blink again as Mike's words give her strength.

And I thought that if I said how I felt -- it would make that day somehow hurt more. Because the truth is -- I don’t know how to be without you, El.

Eleven is tearing up now as his words begin to draw her back toward consciousness. It's as though she were drowning, and Mike's voice is a hand, pulling her back toward the surface.

MIKE I feel like -- my life started that day we found you in the woods. It was pouring rain, you remember? And you -- you were wearing that yellow Benny’s Burgers shirt -- it was so big it almost swallowed you whole. And I knew somehow then -- in that moment -- that I loved you. And I’ve loved you every day since. I love you on your good days and your bad days. I love you with your power… and without. I love you for exactly who you are.

Eleven’s hands tighten around his. She’s listening.

MIKE (CONT'D) And I’m not ready to lose you -- you hear me?? You can do anything -- you can fly, you can move mountains. I believe that. I really do. You -- you just have to keep fighting.

El’s tears slow and color begins to return to her face.

MIKE (CONT'D) So you -- you need to fight, El. Do you hear me?? FIGHT.

El closes her eyes. Focusing her strength. And it happens:: the vines holding her begin to loosen, uncoiling. Lights strobe in the pizza kitchen. As the others look up in awe, Mike keeps focused on El, more determined, it’s working --

MIKE (CONT'D) That's it, EL! FIGHT!! FIGHT!! FIGHT!!!

Vines continue to unravel as Eleven begins to free herself.

MIKE FIIIIIIIIIGHT!

EL UNLEASHES A POWERFUL SCREAM AND -- WHOOSH! -- THE VINES RIP FREE AND SHE DROPS TO THE BLOOD-SOAKED GROUND AND --

WE HOLD FOR A LONG, SILENT BEAT. THEN --

We’re suddenly watching in SLOW MOTION as -- VECNA’S BODY HURTLES BACKWARDS ACROSS THE FOGGY MINDSCAPE. WIDEN TO REVEAL: Eleven, now back on her feet, hand outstretched, using her powers to throw him as --

And if they were going to break up, it should've happened sooner. How is there enough time in the last season for Mileven to break up, have them get over each other, and Mike gets with his ex's brother. That's crazy.

THIS is what I think Bylers don't get. Or they just don't care. Breaking up Mileven, the main couple of the show, and having Byler get together last minute would be horrible writing. Not because I don't want it, but because it js genuinely horrible writing and characterization to do that second.

How are Bylers “ignoring” that Mike has a girlfriend? Since when does a character having a girlfriend mean they will stay with them? Last time I checked, every Byler fully addresses and discusses what Mike and El mean for the narrative and their character arcs. No one is pretending Mike isn’t dating El

Mike literally told Eleven that he loves her nine times in his season 4 monologue. I'm not saying that bylers are ignoring that they're relationship exists, but they're twisting things to fit the narrative they want. Mike is straight and loves El, he said he loves her multiple times throughout the show, he kisses her, he protects her. Like if you actually just watch the show and listen to what the characters say, then you'd know how Mike feels.

And even if byler could be a thing, it doesn't change that Mike is with El right now, they haven't broken up. And if they were going to break up, it should've happened sooner.
