it wasn't until that very moment that liam remembered exactly why he was going out of his way to avoid micah. that sort of thing must happen when you don't spend a lot time with someone, you forget things. he couldn't maintain his composure in the other's presence, already he could start to feel his guard slipping away. "right, i'll remember that," he laughed, "that would definitely be quite a pain," he nodded.

micah’s  well  aware  of  the  fact  that  he’s  not  a  thief  or  into  the  business  of  stealing  people’s  wallets,  but  having  to  awkwardly  waddle  after  liam  makes  him  feel  as  silly  as  he  thinks  he  looks.  not  to  mention  that  the  blonde  moves  pretty  freaking  fast.  which  —  micah  knows  that  liam  is  on  the  swim  team  and  he’s  great  at  it,  but  he  didn’t  think  that  he’d  be  giving  the  goddamn  track  team  a  run  for  their  money.  he’s  about  to  tap  liam  on  the  shoulder  again  when  the  other  stops  short,  nearly  having  micah  collide  straight  into  his  back.  ❝  of  course,  ❞  micah  offers  in  what  he  thinks  is  a  good  response.  it  probably  isn’t.  ❝  i  used  to  have  the  same  backpack  last  year,  but  the  zipper  gave  me  issues.  always  unzipping  itself  and  all.  ❞  it’s  unnecessary  commentary  and  micah  wants  to  say  something  else,  dissolve  this  awkwardness  between  the  two  of  them  that’s  built  up  like  a  wall  since  that  last  party,  though  he  swallows  down  his  boldness  instead.  ❝  just  be  careful,  yeah  ??  next  person  might  be  an  asshole  and  steal  your  credit  cards.  ❞

everyone on campus knows, it's not about what happens at the kick-off party, it's about what happens after. with a weekend full of parties, they all start to blur into each other. the music, the drinks, the faces. but every so often, someone makes an impression. making her way over, kelsey greeted, "i think i've seen you around."

liam had never been the type of person to go out of his way to avoid someone, but maybe that was just because he'd never had a good reason to avoid someone. then micah had gone in for a kiss ... and ever since, liam had made a point of steering clear of his friend. if he could still call him a friend. something told him once you started going out of your way to avoid someone, they were no longer a friend. having already spotted micah, he kept his head down, hoping to make it past without drawing any attention to himself. he was so focused on ignoring micah, however, that it took the other male taping him on the shoulder to realize he had been trying to get liam's attention. "right, you can kee-" he nearly finished telling micah he could keep whatever it was before he realized that it was his wallet. "thank you," he reached out to take it.

some  may  consider  it  too  early  into  the  semester  to  actually  get  work  done,  but  to  them  micah  would  say  they  aren’t  juggling  two  different  sports,  studying,  and  multiple  extracurricular  clubs  that  hold  as  much  expectation  as  any  regular  class.  he  can  at  least  get  ahead  on  readings  for  his  classes  and  create  a  google  calendar  system  to  pinpoint  the  exact  free  slots  in  his  schedule  to  accomplish  anything.  micah’s  on  route  to  the  library,  nose  buried  in  his  phone  as  he  scrolls  through  spotify  trying  to  find  a  song  he’s  in  the  mood  for.  that’s  when  he  nearly  steps  on  a  wallet  on  the  pathway  in  front  of  him.  micah  leans  down  and  grabs  it,  looking  up  to  the  see  the  open  zip  of  someone’s  backpack  steps  ahead  and  swiftly  moving.  ❝  hey,  man  !!  ❞  micah  calls  out,  jogging  to  catch  up  and  tapping  the  blonde  on  the  shoulder.  he’s  saying  ❝  you  dropped  your  wallet.  ❞  when  realization  hits  that  it’s  liam.  well,  this  is  awkward.  ❝  i  think  your,  um,  your  zipper  isn’t  closed.  on  your  bag,  i  mean.  ❞

“nope, not if you’re legal. i think it’s new for this year — i remember complaining about it when i first started. i couldn’t really find anything that interesting either, mainly just watched the freshman battle over crappy free merch like they were in lord of the flies. now that shit was entertainment.”

"seriously? i didn't even think that was possible," liam responded to his friend with a laugh, his eyebrow furrowed and nose crinkled out of disgust. "i don't know why i even bothered showing up," he sighed.

"TELL ME ABOUT it…" Nathan muttered, glancing at his friend with a subtle smile on his face. They have both been there for what felt like an eternity, so the kickoff party could sometimes be quite repetitive. "They got uglier this year." He stated, looking at the crowd that had formed right in front of them. "That's nice, though. Something different, finally."

"Pretty much, I missed a few years but I still think I've had my fill at this point," Francesca mused, agreeing. "Are you an undergraduate-turned-graduate too?" The boy stood next to her looked older than the pack of undergraduates giggling and goofing off. When his tone turned more negative, she smiled softly, hiding a laugh under her lips. "Well, when a crewneck is the most sought-after prize, how much do you expect, really?" She remarked with a sip of her lemonade. "Well, they never fit my head right, at least you could probably get some use out of them."
