I cannot recommend these books enough.

Priory of the orange tree by Samantha Shannon and The Poppy War by R.F Kuanh

Priory of the orange tree is a multiple POV book, all the countries are set in ancient/medieval countries. it has dragons, sapphic and gay characters, whimsy magic systems, fantasy politics and evil gods.

The poppy war is set in ancient/song dynasty china, it’s a “grim dark” fantasy (I’d recommended checking the trigger warnings) it has classism, power imbalance, Fire and Water magic, war, magical drug use.

The priory has a sequel called A day of fallen night

The poppy war is a trilogy (the poppy war, The dragon republic, The burning god )

I would like to request book recommendations that are the following:

1) Fantasy

2) Magic focused

3) Not made for kids (no middle grade or younger YA. New Adult and Adult prefered)

4) not set in modern times

5) I’d like gay characters.

6) please not Sanderson, Tolkien, or GOT
