The Good Fight- Where does Democracy Go
When I started the first episode of the Good Fight that my colleagues introduced me to, I could not stop. I binged watched all six seasons, however, the original excitement and dopamine I derived from earlier seasons gradually become agony, chaos, and even depression. When I finished the last episode of season six, I’ve only left with one sentence: the Democrats are fucked. And no one is there to…

Convenience store
Convenience stores are essentially Asian in my opinion. There are only 40 7-Eleven in Manhattan, yet there are over 1,000 7-Eleven in Taipei, literally, you can find one at every corner of the street. There’s not really 7-Eleven’s equivalent in Europe, the closest is Carrefour city or Franprix. But whether 7-Eleven in Times Square or Franprix in Saint Sulpice wouldn’t give me the same welcome…

The night when the lockdown lifted
The night when the lockdown lifted
I always cry for silly things.  A protester’s photo in Hong Kong, I thought of how they risk their life and future for democracy, only for the little chance they had, then I couldn’t help crying, like Prometheus’s fire, these people light up the dark, where millions of mainlanders long gave up fighting.  The day Shanghai lifted the lockdown after 2 and half months, I took a neighborhood walk…

Symposium- What is love
Symposium- What is love
What is love and why do we need to be loved? That was a question posed on a French magazine called Philosophie. I happened to crossed it one summer at a Parisian public library, and it immediately caught my attention. Inside the magazine, there was an extract of Plato’s Symposium (le Banquet). The essay was long and I didn’t remember it well (could be my imperfect French didn’t allow the ideas to…

Why some patriots get on my nerves
Why some patriots get on my nerves
Mao is our great…

Not A Loser
1 Laurence woke up soaked in sweat. His phone was still ringing with alarm tones, his current practice “Lascia ch’io pianga,” a basic for soprano, but he could never reach the part “e che sospiri.” As he was trying to put DiDonato into silence, the fluorescent light from his phone made him sweat again. He had to leave it. 2 minutes later, his roommate was yelling at the bathroom door, “Laurence!…

Undecided
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My biggest problem in life is that I’m always undecided. If you look at my resume, you’d have a sense. Of course, on interviews, I’d like to say that it’s multi-cultural education and background. I’ve studied in the United States, Taiwan, Japan, and France, yet still, I don’t know where to continue my life. I’ve tried to be a journalist. I’ve loved writing and reading since forever. But I…

On Break-up II
It turns out that the peaceful painless break-up almost does not exist. A month ago, when I said the final words to Panda, I thought I could just be graceful and walk away quietly from his life. In the first few days, tears have washed me away. But I’ve expected that. I literally cried to daylight when Maxime and I broke up. I…

Summer Reading Plan
Tumblr media
I’ve started joining a volunteer program in American library in Paris, then also became their readership member. The library is located in the fancy 7th arrondisement in Paris, very close to the Seine and the Champs de Mars. I loved staying in the library, and with the pandemic going on, feel the urge more than ever to contribute to the whole and to be kinder to one another.

On Break-up
Tumblr media
Panda and I have been on and off for almost a year now. He is not my “usual type”, which is 180cm+, fit and handsome. He’s chubby and cute, and that’s how I call him Panda. The first time we met, when I touched his cheeks as the French style, he became totally red. I found that irresistibly adorable. It was not a “falling in love at first sight,” actually I thought it was just a one-night-stand.…

Turandot
Metropolitan’s recent production of Turandot was just epic. The costumes, the props and the settings are well-suited classical Chinese, nothing would fall in to cultural appropriation even to a Chinese’s eye. (more…)

On depression
Marianne: You’d never hit a woman, would you?
Connell: God, no. Why would you ask that?
Marianne: I don’t know. My dad used to hit my mum.
Connell: Jesus, I’m sorry. Did he ever hit you?
Marianne: no. (She started crying)
Connell: Look I’d never hurt you ok? You made me really happy. I love you. I do. I’m not just saying that, Marianne. I really do.
That’s the moment I shut down my computer, and…

Art is a Remedy
Art is a Remedy
I’ve been struggling with depression for almost all my life. It probably started from early childhood, that when my parents wouldn’t stop fighting (physically) each other, and my mom kept having affairs and beating me whenever she wanted. (more…)

Paris Life
Paris has been a synonym for many things, arts, romance and love. It’s the most dreamt city in the world. Normally, every girl/ woman wants to come to Paris. I was no exception. I would set up Eiffel Tower as background picture on the phone,  picturing the scenes from Sunset in the evening. Especially after diving into the 20th century literature, Paris was really the art centre for me. (more…)
